What about Markstrom? Treliving gave him his contact. Maybe he’d want him back?

Make a blockbuster with Calgary (again)

Duehr + Zadorov + Markstrom + pick

For

Nylander + Liljegren
Im not gonna lie

Unless "Pick" is a European superstar who is a sure fire ppg+ player that is a trade that moves a GM to Mike Milbury level

The cost to dump Murray is being noted as anywhere from

2024 1st, 2024 1st for a 2024 2nd, Robertson

Markstrom has 3 years at 6M left and was dog shit this year. A 1st + Zadorov should be his dump cost alone to a team that can afford that cap

To fulfill the Detroit Red Wings prophecy, the Leafs will have to draft their own Nicklas Lidstrom in a middle round sometime around now... and also trade their version of Coffey and Primeau, aka outer core guys, for their own Brendan Shanahan.

The Wings are remembered for being playoff chokers between 1993 and 1994 when they lost first round series to Toronto and expansion San Jose, marched on the finals in 1995 and lost to New Jersey and then lost to Colorado in the conference finals in 1996... however, they also were conference finalists in 1988 vs Edmonton in Year 4 of Yzerman's career. So it's not like they had never done anything before winning.

Primeau was probably as core for Detroit as Nylander is here. 24 years old, 6’5” center, nearly a point per game since age 22 (73 points in 78 games, 42 points in 45 games, and 52 points in 74 games).

Ray Sheppard was also traded away after scoring 32, 36, 52, and 30 goals. That 30 came in just 43 games during the lockout-shortened season.

WTH????

This guy was a BONAFIDE NHL player last season, I was told over and over ad nauseum.

How could this be that no NHL team prevented this stalwart of a player to leave????

He must have had at least 20 multi-year 1 way NHL contract offers but decided the allure of Swiss chocolate and cheese was too much to resist any longer.

Hopefully he will come back when his statue on our Leafs Legends Row is unveiled…..:sarcasm:

Or when Dubas fetches him....again

Ray Sheppard wasn't really a core player for Detroit. Think their Dave Andreychuk play style-wise, or what Hyman was in Toronto, kind of your garbage goal net front presence hanging out on a top line.

Primeau was kind of like their Nylander in the sense he was not the core, core but also like their Knies, if Knies had been drafted top 3 in the league. He was a lot younger than Yzerman drafted 7 years apart and his production was very disappointing for that era. His 73 points ranked him 6th in team scoring in 1994.

So Backholm, Lindholm, Hanifin potentially all wanting out, as UFA's following next season.

It really feels like there's a ton of big stuff that's still going to happen this offseason with teams like CAL, PHI, WPG, SJ still having players they're apparently going to move.

The challenge being that 11 teams are currently over the cap and another 8 teams have less than $5mil of room.

Making these deals is incredibly difficult right now.

The decision for management is whether they believe we are a true contender or not.

If they think we can compete for a cup this year, they won’t want to lose a trade. They either need to keep him or return players that can help as much or more.

If they don’t think we’re really contenders, and they don’t want to sign him to his ask, then getting anything of value for the future is a win.

All signs point to Shanny believing in the core. Which is why the Leafs have been pushing for extensions on Matthews/Nylander as their preferred course of action this summer.

2 year deal would be ideal with Samsonov. Then him and Woll expire at the same time, see who you invest bigger money into then.

 convenient there’s no trade market and he’s suddenly an LTIR potential

Murray’s at the dock waiting to go to Robidas Island

Matt Murray as we speak:

if Marner goes UFA, there is a bidding war and he ends up the NHL's highest paid player.
please... if you think otherwise you are delusional.
Tavares didnt take the most $$ when we signed him... let that sink in when you underrate Marner's open market value.
For a guy who shrivels in the playoffs? I don't see it.

Ok, I'll play. Show your math.

Normally, a longer term would mean a lower cap hit, but with the cap rising, Matthews likely wants more money for more term.

He’s 26 years old at the start of this season. A three year extension would lock him up for the entirety of his 20s, and not a second of his 30s.

Any years after 30 are likely to see declining production, so they should lower the average cap hit. If that doesn’t happen, a shorter deal is much better for Toronto.

I don't know how you getaway with LTIRetiring Murray

You need to convince both Murray to get on board and the league to believe its legit.

For Murray this is a career death sentence while still being in his 20's . He probably still has the professional athletes mentality that he can defy odds and still play in the league a while and this is a contract year for that.

For the league there is pressure if Toronto tries to flex their financial muscles by spending over the cap. Murray is not ever dealing with the same injury and there isn't a injury called being fragile. So what injury will the leafs bring to the LTIR table when justifying it?

Buyout is the easiest course.

sidenote i am a sens fan so I have been watching this situation for a bit because we need the space lol so i definitely have a horse in the race here.
