Would you do first rounder straight?

Not sure - It would be hard to acquire Kane without that 1st round pick, in fact I am pretty sure it's mathematically impossible to get both Kane and Tanev on the roster unless someone is LTIR until playoffs.

Wait until Weegar extends, then a RD will become available.

I would personally prefer Tanev.

Weegar has primarily played LD, despite being Left Handed. I have no idea how Calgary will utilize him, LD, or RD. My personal opinion, is that they won't extend him. He's likely looking for $7 mil plus which I don't think they'll do. Also, I question whether he'll get the same offensive opportunities in Calgary, that he got in Florida. Would he supplant Andersson or Hanifin's offensive opportunities? I think Weegar will also want to go somewhere, where he can be one of the top two guys... but we shall see how the season plays out.

Hanifin-Weegar
Kylington-Tanev
Zadorov-Andersson

I don't think they'd want to put Weegar with Zadorov, too slow of a pairing. Unsure how it ultimately goes but not sure I see 7M in value with Weegar, I don't think I could go beyond the deal similar to what we gave Brodie, maybe another 500k.

Evolving Hockey’s contract projection, which has proven to be stunningly accurate, predicts Weegar’s deal at $7.683M for seven years. That is a total contract value of 53.781M.

I liked Weegar for a long time, I was pushing for him around the time we nearly acquired him for Johnsson and Dermott but that contract would be a bit too rich for me.

I am a Weegar booster and have wanted him since we were tied to him with Dermott.

While his extension projections are a bit daunting, he fits our long term needs and plans perfectly.

With him in the fold I feel the time would be right to move on from Muzzin, both for the cap space and for the long term development of our D corps.

Still not on board with any trades involving Knies and Topi, but any assets moved to get Weegar are much easier to stomach than proposals for Kane and Chychrun.

What if we shuffled out Muzzin in another deal, maybe even in a Chicago deal for Kane and just signed Weegar as a UFA, if he hits UFA?

It's all IFS right now, dog days of summer.

I hope you guys are right about the future impact of these prospects if you're entering the business of turning down a Patrick Kane. Kane shouldn't be bunched in with names like Chychrun, Kane can still give young guys like Marner a run for their money. As of today it's not clear if Knies entire career can match the impact of one season of Patrick Kane next season. Kane is a superstar, one best player in the entire league.

Yes, Patrick Kane is an exciting player......

........ who is going to be 34 years old in November and a UFA in 2023.

How much $$$ are you re-signing him for, and will he even re-sign? What are you giving up to get him? A 1st in a very deep draft in 2023? The only projected power-forward that we have in our pipeline in Knies? A projected Top 4 RHD in Topi?

Simply put, we are not an "all-in" team until we know what our goalies are going to do. If you give up those assets to trade for Kane, we crash and burn in the 1st round, and he walks away for nothing as a UFA, you have made a blunder that impacts our team long-term.

By the way, I don't think Kane is even a Top 10 player anymore. You seem to think he is, which is where our difference in values starts but certainly doesn't end.

Add Kane to my list of "can't wait until they go somewhere else" list along with Chychrun, so I don't have to keep hearing Knies and Topi's name thrown into every trade......

Yeah, it would be like people against acquiring Kawhi for the Raptors when they did. Winning a cup by strictly playing safe and avoiding the deep end is not working. Also, going heavy in for someone like Foligno was not a big enough piece. Kane fits the bill for someone gunning for a lift at the right time. Dubas really needs to be figuring out if the big 3 will be extended here. If not, you need a splash like this to happen. If they extend the big 3, the window is larger and having youth knocking at the door is important to keep.

92 points last season on the 6th worst team. Players like Kane are not typical. They didn't say "top 10" in their post. Kane was top 15 in points last year. Put him with Matthews and you think he doesn't at least stay top 15? He can't crack top 10?

But sure, lets just continue to be mediocre, because we might lose slightly above average prospects.

We will disagree.

For the assets and investment in question, I'm going after and extending J.T Miller instead of Kane.

You thought the Foligno trade was a bad one? Kane could project to be just as bad or even worse long-term if we fail to get past the 1st round and lose him as a UFA.

Thankfully we have a TML leadership group smarter than all of us running things, right? :)

I don’t understand why Patty Kane won’t be a good addition to the Leafs.
I can see the argument about the right price though.

I can see Kane doing really well with AM.
MM pairing back with JT.
Then have Willie running his own line, assuming Hawks won’t take Willie due to salary.

Triple retention gets him at 2.625. Assuming the price isn't terrible high which it probably will be, I'll do it.
That would be his double retention cap hit. Probably 1st, Knies, Sandin, Robertson for Kane at 50% and another 1st or 2nd + prospect for the second retention.

I don't think getting Kane is realistic either, but there's no chance Kane double retained for 1 year costs 1st + 1st + 2nd + Knies + Sandin + Robertson + prospect. I can't think of any precedent for anything close to that.

That’s not what I posted.
