Again ill take the 26 year old who has improved each year and is now a .9 per game than a prospect who was drafted 3rd overall in a very weak draft and is still just a prospect with no guarantee he will ever be a star in the big show
If you mean the player you want on your team today then sure. That isn’t what I’m arguing. I laid out my argument here:
Again - Cooley is "untouchable" to Coyotes fans because a lot of public scouts are saying he has the highest ceiling in the draft and he was literally just drafted.

People put Nylander in trade proposals because this is his peak value and realistically the best time to trade him. He will never hold this level of trade value again. Next off season he will be one year away from signing an 8 year deal that will take him to 36 and he won't carry the same value with only 1 year left on his contract.

I'm not proposing the Leafs trade Nylander for Cooley. I am explaining why Coyotes fans view Cooley as untouchable and half of Leafs fans think moving on from Nylander would be wise.

I imagine the amount of leaf fans who want to “move on” from William Nylander is not close to half.

It’s still the same old vocal minority that has wanted to trade him his entire career so far lol

That, and some people just want change, perhaps for the sake of change... and some because they've lost patience with the team, and think change is required. Of the big four, he's the easiest to move. I don't think it makes that much sense, but depending on returns, you could always make a case for a deal. I remember one discussion around Holtz, McLeod and NJD's 1st this year (before the draft) for Nylander and our 1st.... I'm not sure they'd ever do that, but we would have ended up with Holtz, McLeod and Wright out of such a deal. But barring a really solid deal such as that, that helps with cap, and brings more talent.. heck no.

Since this is referring to my post I will say that I have wanted him moved since the contract dispute, not his entire career. Right now is his peak value which is why I have posted about it a lot this summer.

This week's roster proposal:

Trades:
Nylander for Mangiapane
Muzzin for Henrique
Engvall+Ottawa 2023 3rd for Puljujarvi
Kerfoot+Holl to any team for futures assuming they still have value which is the consensus in this forum.

Signings:
Sandin 2Mx2
ZAR 1.25Mx1 or 2
Stralman 0.75Mx1

2.55M in cap space this season to accumulate throughout the year. In 2 seasons the Leafs clear out Murray/Brodie/Henrique to re-sign Sandin/Liljegren/Matthews. In 3 years the Leafs use Tavares' money to re-sign Marner/Mangiapane.

Nylander for Mangiapane is absolutely awful.
Please explain this thought.

With Mangiapane you get an additional year of term. You save ~1.15M. You get a top 10 defensive forward in the league. You don't lose any goals. Mangiapane's forechecking would be more conducive to Tavares' offensive play as well.

I don't know. Mangiapane has one good season, and overall in his career has 0.51 PPG, while Nylander has 0.78 PPG. Mangiapane had his career year, with 55 points, while Nylander had 80.

I see his other strengths, but I just see this as a bad trade.

Carries on into the playoffs too.

Lindholm on the other hand ... except they don't have any extra centers.

Throw in Kerfoot and then take back some Cap.

Non-Russian players still going to Russia?

I think going to play in Italy might be better, you can't spend money behind bars.
Crazy they could watch the Griner situation and thinks its a good idea to go over right now...

That is your opinion and it's fair.

If you extend if out two years and add some context the points are closer than it looks. At 5v5 over the last 2 years:
PlayerG/60A1/60P1/60P/60
Mangiapane1.330.661.992.2
Nylander0.9711.972.2

Nylander's most common center over the last 2 years is Tavares and Mangiapane's has been Backlund. For all the heat Tavares' gets he's a better point producer than Backlund at 5v5.

Where the difference in points lies is powerplay assists. Over the last 2 years Nylander has put up 2.62 more assists per 60 on the power play than Mangiapane. Nylander has only scored 0.36 more goals per 60 on the powerplay - or 1 extra goal for every 166 minutes on the powerplay. This past season Mangiapane actually scored more goals/60 on the powerplay than Nylander.

Mangiapane's defense also shouldn't be shrugged off. He has legitimately been a top 10 defensive forward in the NHL over the last 2 years (top 5 according to EvolvingHockey).

Mangiapane also has a better contract situation which has value in today's NHL.

Lindholm on the other hand ... except they don't have any extra centers.

I think Lindholm has far more value than Nylander and trading him wouldn't help Calgary compete. They are also in need of RS center. Calgary's C depth is Lindholm, Backlund, Dube. Backlund, Dube, Kerfoot is not strong enough. Their LW depth is Huberdeau, Mangiapane, Coleman, Pelletier. They would probably be interested in subtracting from there to add a RW because their only true RW is Toffoli.

Most overrated player in the NHL.... Basically asking for 3 1st+

If the picks are fairly well protected and the prospect is someone like Brannstrom (who Ottawa can fully live without and doesn't have a ton of value beyond prestige) in addition to Arizona taking on Zaitsev, I think it could be fair.

I wouldn't do Sandin ++ for Chychrun though, not that we can afford it cap-wise anyways.

The other thing is, Ottawa's RD is nowhere near good enough and Chychrun is a win-now move. Stralman, Subban, Stone aren't helping them. Maybe if they get Holl as their Zaitsev replacement it could make some sense, but that is going to cost them another 2nd round pick if they want the Leafs to serious consider it.

I am surprised the Rangers haven't put together a really competitive offer for him though. They seem like the perfect fit and they definitely have the young assets.

Arizona probably wants a Seth Jones return when he is worth closer to Muzzin.
