This lineup needs to answer to the hype before we get worried. DeBrincat will be making 10m on his next contract, and Weegar likely ends up staying in CGY in my opinion.
I don’t think Calgary wants to pay the $7-8 mil that Weegar will be asking for.
I am in the same boat as @Fogelhund here. Calgary has a very good blue line already without Weegar. They'd be better off to invest the money they have coming off the books into a 2C.

I can definitely see a world where Ottawa dishes out 7-7.5M/year for Weegar with him being an Ottawa guy and a RS D. It'll be interesting to see whether or not he actually plays RD in Calgary this year.

As for raises - the Sens are probably looking at 9.5M for Debrincat (Tkachuk, Point, Kucherov, Gaudreau), and ~8M for Stutzle (between B. Tkachuk and Norris).

Probably not, but that might depend on Monahan?

One of the most broken down 27 year olds in the league?

Even when he's played most of the season he's done so with some serious injuries.

And they have to re-sign Lindholm so they need space there.

Not sure I'm completely sold on Weeger anyway.

Weegar is a very good 3/4 who has been pushed into a 1/2 spot, and done a decent enough job with it, that he’ll get paid as one. I think he’s a bit in over his head as a 1/2 though. If you’ve got Weegar on your second pairing, you’ve likely got an excellent d-core.

If Ottawa can get Chychrun for Zaitsev, Greig, 1st and then sign Weegar next off season and somehow find a goalie (Jarry?) they are starting to look scary:

Debrincat-Stutzle-Giroux
Tkachuk-Norris-Batherson
Formenton-Pinto-Joseph
Kelly-Kastelic-X

Chabot-Zub
Chychrun-Weegar
Sanderson-JBD

X
Forsberg

Yes, that's how you rebuild. Could you imagine what could have been if Ottawa didn't trade for Duchene - they'd have both Shane Bowers and Bowan Byram (assuming they would draft him)?

Good - Ottawa can and will probably pay that too. My guess is it becomes a 1st, a conditional 2nd, and someone like Ridly Greig or Shane Pinto. I don't think they are getting Jake Sanderson.
Honestly i have no idea what he will return. Some of the trades this past year or 2 have been wild.

They are also going to need to pay a fair number of those players though. They will have cap space, but Zub, Weegar, DeBrincat, Stutzle, Formenton, and Pinto all need new contracts, and then the starter too.

It would be tight next year. I could see them signing Weegar and letting Zub walk then signing a goalie in UFA the following year when they clear 5.5M of dead cap off the books.

This week's roster proposal:

Trades:
Nylander for Mangiapane
Muzzin for Henrique
Engvall+Ottawa 2023 3rd for Puljujarvi
Kerfoot+Holl to any team for futures assuming they still have value which is the consensus in this forum.

Signings:
Sandin 2Mx2
ZAR 1.25Mx1 or 2
Stralman 0.75Mx1

View attachment 577375

2.55M in cap space this season to accumulate throughout the year. In 2 seasons the Leafs clear out Murray/Brodie/Henrique to re-sign Sandin/Liljegren/Matthews. In 3 years the Leafs use Tavares' money to re-sign Marner/Mangiapane.
Please stop.

Is this the rumored return?

Still bad defensively imo and I'm not just talking about the defensemen.

Also...there are a couple guys in that top 9 who might not even be eligible to play this season, or might face lengthy suspensions.

Magniapane is a piece dubas would use to augment the leafs

He wouldn't replace Nylander and the cap savings are minimal

I'd trade Sandin/Robertson + 1st + Kerfoot for him if they retained him to 4.5M

But Nylander isn't on the table for him straight up

Nylander + Holl for Magniapne + Andersson/Hanafin/Weegar

Is a deal I'd probably pull the trigger

I guess what I am saying is probably a 1st because they just gave Minnesota an early 2nd for him. But he's nothing more than bottom line C
Thanks for the input. By the numbers he appeared to me to be growing into his size. Is it his skating that is holding him back?

Skating and the lack of any urge to compete. He wants it handed it to him because of his dad

No reports or rumours out there about what we're going to do to get under the cap? Or does somebody know something I don't about how they could get under it without moving out like 2 million dollars?

That, and some people just want change, perhaps for the sake of change... and some because they've lost patience with the team, and think change is required. Of the big four, he's the easiest to move. I don't think it makes that much sense, but depending on returns, you could always make a case for a deal. I remember one discussion around Holtz, McLeod and NJD's 1st this year (before the draft) for Nylander and our 1st.... I'm not sure they'd ever do that, but we would have ended up with Holtz, McLeod and Wright out of such a deal. But barring a really solid deal such as that, that helps with cap, and brings more talent.. heck no.
Obviously. Of the 'big four' he has the best contract, but that also makes him the best value to keep.

As a general rule, unless you are desperate, you should never trade one player for three.
