Cooley is about as untouchable to Arizona as Matthews and Marner are to the Leafs. Cooley is going to be an absolute stud of a player, and believe it or not, I can definitely see Arizona having a pretty strong team within the next couple of years if their prospects pan out to what they're capable of.
its funny, cooley is untouchable but a ppg william you put out in trades like he's chopped liver hah

Cooley has to learn to pass
If he doesn’t he will be an AHL veteran
Im not impressed

Cooley is no defensive beast
It's not his defense that makes him untouchable.

Cooley has at least 5 extra years of team control over Nylander. He also has at 3 seasons on an ELC compared to Nylander at ~7M for the next 2 and most likely a raise after that. Cooley is almost guaranteed to produce more per dollar than Nylander once he turns pro until he signs his 2nd deal whether that be 3 or 4 seasons from now. Cooley is also a C (for now).

At no point in there did I even mention his overall ability which I'd love a draft expert to weigh in on who showed more potential leading up to the draft between Cooley and Nylander.

I see both sides. But with a hard cap and ELC contracts limiting how much these young kids can make, and with having the potential to grossly exceed their max contract amounts earlier in their careers, gone are the days when draft picks will be traded around like they used to. I don't think its just a fan opinion thing - I think there's been a shift in culture across the league where all GMs are now much more discerning with their top-30 picks and especially their top-15 picks.

It has taken years, but with the introduction of the Cap, the belief was the gap between stars and everyone else would grow and increase.

Not sure we've seen this many entry level type of deals being chased by so many established NHL players. Maybe just more aware of it, but it seems the Leafs could have close to half their forwards at entry level cost.

There are a few more NCAA Free Agents eligible today.

Some of the more notable ones:

C Brett Stapley (MTL) - Denver - 99'
C Cole Guttman (TBL) - Denver - 99'
C Samuel Walker (TBL) - Minnesota - 99'
LW/C Tyler Weiss (COL) - Nebraska-Omaha - 00'
RD Jack St. Ivany (PHI) - Boston College - 99'
LD Nick Leivermann (COL) - Notre Dame - 98'

The Marlies signed Matt Hellickson after he expired last year. The Marlies/Growlers could use one more depth forward and one more depth LD. I would rather have a younger guy like Kasper Larsen for the depth LD spot. I do not think we really need an undersized, one-dimensional playmaker like Weiss. However, Sammy Walker, Cole Guttman, or Brett Stapley would be a solid addition to the AHL rotation for next year. I like Guttman and Walker more than Stapley, but all three have bottom 6 potential even though they are smaller.

Kadri should have signed day 1 he is losing money every passing day. He’s not young enough to risk that 1 year deal and try to cash in next year again.

And so they must when 4 of their players represent 50% of their cap space lol

The latest report I saw that had some credibility was him holding firm on 9 million per longterm.

I said this a while ago but I think NYR offered him 8 to 8.5 ×7, he asked for 9 so the Rags moved on a knock off Kadri in Trochek and took their offer off the table.

Now Kadri is stuck on what he could have had and no team is offering anything close to that 8-8.5 he turned down.

He's being super greedy .. Definitely should have settled for a bit less on the AAV and more on the term.

Now he'll get less $ and shorter term with whatever he settles on.

Should start asking guys now if they will accept a PTO .. see if the allure of toronto has any weight with these guys and go from there - no money committed until you see what they can do

Even one-way deals; worst case scenario they pass through waivers and play for the Marlies, with near-NHL-like resources and accommodations, on an NHL salary. There is a HUGE difference between playing for the Marlies versus a team like Rockford, Bakersfield, Rochester, Springfield, Utica, or Tuscon.

We only have one contract spot open unfortunately. Spent a few too many spots on guys who really should not have received ELC's.

I urge him to hold-out for that 9 * 7 deal.

Calgary moved their farm to Calgary.

Maybe some extra travel, but makes sense to me.

1. Team control means nothing when the player himself isn't as good as the player he's being compared to. Juraj Slafkovský isn't more valuable than Nathan Mackinnon for having much more years of cheap control.
2. Prospects bust all the time.
3. Arizona isn't known for developing scoring forwards, that's where offence goes to die.
