they should do the work and try and get under the cap without using LTIR - if this is bergy/krejci last kick at the can here might as well try and accrue as much space as you can to add depth pieces, especially with the age of the team
Even if they have 20 million available at the deadlineThey will still be limited what they can do with it. If they are rebuilding starting next year then they can’t trade their top picks as that defeats the whole purpose of a rebuild.

atleast have yourself in the position to add

These always crack me up.

So, you pencil in Trenin as our 3C.... a guy who but has a collective 51 faceoffs in 3 years of NHL play.... so he isn't really a C, and on top of that, has less points in 146 games, than Kerfoot had last year. Perhaps you meant Sissons? Weird trade otherwise, and while I see the attraction in Jeannot.... it's a bad trade if you really meant Trenin, who isn't a C at all.

Star would NEVER do that trade, it's terrible for them.

Overall, these just make us worse, which is the norm.
At least, for once, there is no customary/obligatory gutting of the Leafs to bring in Chychrun and Crouse, as is usually one of the trade scenarios always presented here..

Already that Crouse extension is paying dividends I tell you!!!! :)

Any chance Hirvonen and Niemela get a shot in camp with us? I feel like Hirvonen could be an X factor to make the team out of camp

No, they just aren't ready as of yet. It would be too soon for Hirvonen, as he really needs to work on his offensive game further. At this point, it would stunt his game. Another year or two in Europe, then the Marlies, and then maybe he has a shot.

Niemela is probably two years away or so, at least in my guess. Another year in Europe, one with the Marlies, and maybe a shot then.

For all the Crouse fans in here.

I'm a big Crouse fan. He would do well here with either Marner or Nylander. Not worth that money though. 3x3 would've been nice. Would give Knies a full year in college, second year for Knies to break in, then the third to swap spots or move Crouse for a decent return if there's no chance to re-sign.

I'll just hold out hope Niemela can provide the missing piece on the blueline.

Niemela told Nevalainen that he models his game after Miro Heiskanen, Cale Makar, and Erik Karlsson—fast, puck-moving defenseman who transition the puck effectively, excel on the power play, and use active sticks and excellent positioning to shut down attackers. Apparently the Karpat coaches regularly prepare footage of those guys for him to review. Although it's very unlikely he reaches the heights of those three, perhaps he'll hit somewhere between Niskanen and Heiskanen. That would be an excellent return on investment for the Leafs' third round pick.

I'm holding him to his thoughts.

"Bergeron signed for 2.5M with an additional 2.5 in performance based incentives. Krejci signed for just $1M, with an additional $2M possible in his own performance based incentives.."

Nice to see players put winning and loyalty >>>> $$$$$$
Bergeron and krejci are like 60 years old bro how much do you think they can get. Retirement 8x8 starting point but opted for the homeboy discount?

What about a PTO for Brassard? 4th line C competition for Gaudette. We could actually have 2 true centers that PK.

Neither of them should be in that competition.

Brassard is cooked, and he hasn't even really been a center for a number of years.

Bottom 6 centers should be Jarnkrok and Kampf.

70pt pace and a Selke so even at that age $5M x 2 all day long I would think. Thornton got $8M x 1 and was not half the play at that age. Bergeron is aging like Selanne. If the Leafs had the cap room and PB was done with the Bruins what would you pay?

We really shouldn't be yo-yo'ing kids like that to the top of the prospect depth chart. Lots of Marlies guys are going through the developmental system and to have kids bypassing that whole system doesn't work.

Yes, but they are trade ideas and we could use more of them in this thread. There are enough threads outside of here that can collect some of the other comments. Just my opinion. Cheers.

Have to be careful here though. This can turn into a country club development system real quick if they bias seniority (seniority via time spent in the system). If Hirvonen or Niemela etc come in here and perform better than everyone else, they should indeed jump them on the depth chart. Perhaps they have a fluid depth chart that is allowed to change day by day and a main depth chart that is more rigid. Use both to determine who plays.

A pure meritocracy sounds great in theory but a mid rounder stealing a job at 20 in camp, keeping it and contributing is a really rare feat. Kaberle might be the last guy to do it.

Brenden Dillon might be available, is a left-handed D, but has played plenty on the right side as well. He didn't have a great year last year with Winnipeg. Winnipeg could be looking to move him, to get some of their Left handed D prospects into the lineup. Apparently they are looking for forwards.

Honestly, I haven't paid attention to his play the last couple of years, but do remember him from years past, as a very good defensive D man, good size, very physical. I'm not sure what his skating is like.

If he were an acquisition, it could open up a number of moves. It could allows us to move Muzzin, while still maintaining that physicality in the lineup, a good PK'er as well. We could also move Holl and Kerfoot. We'd have close to $5 mil in cap space, which could allow us to sign both Stastny and Rodrigues, upgrade our C's, as well as overall quality in forwards.

Thoughts?

That's alot for Crouse; but theyre banking on him taking the next step.

Still wondering what's going to give on the Sandin front. Starting to think he's moved unfortunately.

So it's been confirmed that Bergeron's bonus is having played 10 games or more, which surely he will do. While this is a unique situation, this might be a greater Cap circumvention move, than some of the LTIR shenanigans around the league. Krecji is probably the same, so while there is benefit for them this year, they'll have a $3.5 mil cap hit next year, for those bonuses... that being said, this is Boston's last kick at the can, and they'll be done after this year for sure.
