Can't entirely discount the possibility of a player taking a big discount from his market value to stay somewhere but it's a low chance. And even if that player would take considerably less, the Leafs aren't budgeted to pay the Matthews/Marner 3rd wheel generously. It's already the most expensive pair in hockey, they need the 3rd wheel to be a cheap guy.

5 years at $4.3 million for this guy, is WAY too much, on that term. I get that he's a bit of a unicorn, but his offense so far is pretty limited. I could imagine that with a guy like Marner, an Elite passer, you could get more out of him, but not much. I wouldn't have minded him on the Leafs, but really would value him at $3 mil tops. I don't think this ages well, and likely this should end conversation about him playing here.

If some of the cap rise projections are true 4.25 million will be almost 3rd line money in not too many years so probably worth it depending on the term and if he continues to produce

Like @Menzinger has said, and I did, this is a complete wait and see for me. I love what he's done, and his chemistry with Matthews and Marner is undeniable. But in Robertson, Knies, and Amirov, we have three potential top six LW's for next year. Maybe Robertson shows he can play in our top six this year. Maybe Knies tears up the NCAA, and makes an impact with us in the playoffs. Maybe Amirov's recovery is so good, that he returns to play, and has an excellent season, and coming over next year. Maybe none of this happens... but if we have THREE top six LW prospects, all on sub $ 1 mil contracts, who show a great deal this year... how can you possibly pay someone ~$ 4 mil, when you have cheaper options, that might be as good, or better. Who knows, but lets see what happens this year with Bunts, Robertson, Knies and Amirov... this is a spot where I'm in absolutely no rush to make decisions.

"Bergeron signed for 2.5M with an additional 2.5 in performance based incentives. Krejci signed for just $1M, with an additional $2M possible in his own performance based incentives.."

Nice to see players put winning and loyalty >>>> $$$$$$

Matthews will do the same

When he signs for 15 instead of 16 and the media claims he took a massive pay cut

I don't see a fit with the Leafs for a player that generates all of his chances off the rush. The contract makes it a non-starter now.
It's tough to make it work with guys like that. Although different styles it's a similar issue as we had with Miky and Kapanen.

Because the passing/vision/puck possession is poor they don't fit in the top 6 with high end players. They kill just as many plays with poor playmaking as they create with their speed and rush game.

Stick them on the third line with and they give you value by generating goals out of nothing with lesser players - but can you reall afford 4-5 milion 3rd liners?

I also agree to wait and see how he plays this season. However if Bunting puts up another season around 25 goals and 60 points i would be happy to tie him down to 4 million long term regardless of what the prospects are doing. That is really good value.

What is the word on Amirov, figured he was pretty much a huge question mark at this point so have been ignoring him in a way?

By the end of this year I doubt we will know if Amirov and Knies or even Robertson are ready for top line duty which Bunting has proven he can thrive in. Would be a big gamble to let him walk in the hope all of those guys pan out.

I would be weary of cap rise projections for a bit

Gary plays the game and the yotes are about to lose a f*** load of money that'll be passed onto the players
That's fair. Its definitely a crap shoot

Well they do have a combined 4.5 mill in performance bonuses too though.
Very true though it kicks the can cap hit wise to next year whereby they are less likely to compete so the cap hits this year are arguably more important.

Bergeron for $2.5M is gross lol

And now Krejci for $1M
Boston should be off to a slow start due to their injuries to McAvoy and Marchand. Think they'll either be WC1 or WC2

If we win the division I would love to face them. Would feel really good to be the ones to push that team into a rebuild. f*** the Bruins

And if we lose....well time to blow this team up lol

It is pragmatic with Amirov to simply forget about him .. with his health issue and life being more important you dont even include him in projections until he makes you. Then god willing it is a bonus

Knies should not have any pressure on him this year to make an impact the last few games let alone playoffs. If he plays himself into it then fine.. i just see several commenta about him and playoffs

robertson could be the key in implementing three offensive lines and then a 4th checking line

Potentially next year

bunting matthews marner
Robertson nylander x
Knies tavares x
