It was reported by Friedman on 31 thoughts (not sure if print or podcast) in the 2020 off season that Dubas was close to acquiring Weegar but Florida wanted Johnsson and Dermott. If you look up “Weegar Johnsson Dermott” on Twitter there are pages of references to the trade. I’d link them but I’m on my phone and quite frankly don’t know how to link tweets from my phone.
Its ok.. i barely know how to use it

Not like i am a huge fan of weegar but man.. i never understood the fascination with dermott. Its like people got mesmermized be of how much he made his arms move

I figured it out and linked some tweets.

It should have been a no brainer move. Especially because Dubas traded Johnsson for Anderson in the same off season.

At this point can we safely assume teams with cap space are holding out for a premium on dumps?

Seems like there's quite the dam ready to break. Hopefully we can free up a little cap and get some bargain deals on outstanding free agents.

Let's see if Anderson contributes this year.
Probably a make or break season with the Leafs.
Not like johnsson has impressed since leaving Toronto.
I’m not dogging that trade. I actually liked it at the time. I just prefer Weegar over Anderson and a 3rd (Dermott return).

So would you move Kerfoot for future considerations and Capspace alone?

Would you then blame Dubas for moving him for futures rather than holding him?
I think the Leafs are in a spot where keeping Kerfoot is their best option. He probably holds little to no value in a trade and he’s still a valuable player the Leafs could use. By keeping a 3.5M spot on their cap sheet and not filling it with a long term commitment they can just transfer that cap space to Bunting next summer.

That really depends. If we used the cap space and signed any two of Stastny, Rodrigues, ZAR… then yes, I’d be happy with such a move.

But to move Kerfoot without replacing his production would be a mistake. If we had other options to sign replacements, yes futures of some sort would do. Maybe not just “future considerations”, I think there is value there, but at the end of the day, if the team is better, who cares.

With capspaceas as it is how many players have much value.
BJ's gave away a good player for peanuts to sign Gaudreau.

The team could likely get a pick for him but I'd keep him as an own rental unless there's an obvious replacement available.

He's likely as good as the average tdl top 9 rental will be - and that will cost the team assets

I think the market has stalled until the Islanders finally get their crap together and sign Kadri.

That means teams start turning to the secondary market, which includes Kerfoot.

Hopefully not too off topic, but I've noticed that a lot of the trade threads on the main board have this very low opinion of Sandin....even going as far as to say he sucks.

Where is this coming from?

If we're honest with ourselves, we certainly tend to overrate particularly our young players, but does anyone else think Sandin has sucked?

I've thought he's been fairly promising during his short, barely over 82 game tenure so far.

Certainly skating is a concern, but this phenomenon is a bit bizarre to me. Am I crazy?

And yes, I know, there's a lot of anti-Leaf sentiment, but the discrepancy is too wide to be what I consider normal.
Leafs fans pumping him up to improve his trade value.

Good on Calgary, salvaged some of there off season, contract might look bad in years 6 to 8, but it still keeps their window to compete in the West.

Good for them indeed. From an asset management point of view it's pretty much like they only lost tkachuk due to having to trade him for not wanting to be there for a top three defenseman first-round pick and a good Prospect

Especially if he becomes a 115 point player.

Maybe Matthews can score 70.

Huberdeau had a career high 69 points in his 24 year old season, in 82. Mitch who this year was 24 just got 97 in 72 and also has a 94 under his belt. He’ll absolutely have several 100 point seasons and is five years younger.

And Mitch has been better in the playoffs.

I think Huberdeau is better than Gaudreau and for the last two years has been better than Marner, that’s a hell of a bag for him.

But he’s a glass cannon pure offense guy and he’s not gonna be a 100 point player for at least the last four years of it.

EDIT: And I also think Huberdeau is better than Tkachuk, at least for now.

If they can extend Weegar, that’s one heck of a good move for Calgary, managing themselves out of a terrible situation.
