I don't see claiming as a possibility. We'd have 50 contracts, blocking us from signing ZAR. But I could see a trade, to give a couple of D bodies in the system, sending someone out.

Yeah that's a good point about ZAR signing soon. But yeah I think a trade to add a depth option might be ok but at this point, it's not a big deal. A shame that we have like 4-5 players on loan still counting as part of our 50.

the Leafs are going to need to have enough cap space for a league min call-up, so it looks like the most they can sign Z.A.R for is $769,384, which is an awfully low contract for a guy like him.

I don't know how this is all going to get sorted

Mete, Gaudette, Simmonds, Benn look to be the most likely to be claimed. If they can send Benn down while he's injured he should be safe.

Anderson, Hollowell and Clifford clear.

Pretty disappointed in Anderson honestly. I expected him to stand out in camp or at least make the decision to waive him a difficult one for Dubas. Seems like him being waived is a foregone conclusion.

If Mete makes the team, how does this impact which players are on waivers? I haven't been following that contract/waiver situation at all.

In regard to the 50 contract limit; interesting to see if some of the players who don't make the team get claimed on waivers or could be moved for future considerations / 7th rounders just to ease up flexibility. We have too many fringe players, I'm thinking of Simmonds and Clifford, even Anderson has been a disappointment in preseason and isn't young anymore.

Simmonds will be like Spezza. Won’t get claimed as he’d retire. Anderson will get claimed. Audette might as well. Clifford I’m not sure on either. Also a local guy.

Simmonds earned his money earlier, but can Clifford just retire and leave his paycheck on the table?

I think the waiver question will be the first thing they end up discussing and then it snowballs after that

Basically it comes down to:
1. Do malgin and anderson project to be mid to long term contributors
2. Does losing one of or both hurt us enough

Other players have played as well as malgin in different areas. Are those other areas more or less impactful to what we need in these next two years to hit home plate.

At this point, Anderson they don't care about. Malgin I think they do. Just my opinion.

I mean after all....Malgin IS leading the team in scoring in the preseason.

What more can he do? People have preconceptions based on the trade and are not watching him. He's solid enough in all zones and showed that he can complement a line that doesn't have a Nylander on it and put up points against Ottawa's A team.

Fun fact. Malgin is younger than McCann.

Did we not extend Clifford for two years last season? I'd love to know why.

Leafs use the power of the purse to guarantee big league salaries to guys they want to store on the Marlies for depth, because other teams are more likely to avoid claiming them on waivers.

Malgin's been good. He's been good for a couple of years now. Once people see him in regular season, I think they'll begin to warm up to him.

Agreed. I think the trade shocked him at the time and he just never adjusted. A couple years away to get his confidence up and grow some maturity in his game.

Teams need those complementary scorers....that's what has hurt the Leafs on and off over the past several seasons.

Mete is probably the only player I'd think it would be a shame to lose on waivers. He's depth they need to keep if they can. I'm guessing that he isn't getting waived any time soon with Liljegren injured, Muzzin's questionable health and Sandin being behind schedule for the season. He may even be in the lineup on opening night.

Re Chychrun

He's a good player. But I don't think the Leafs need such a major upgrade on D, especially considering he's going to be very pricey as an asset.

I'd rather make a trade for another impact forward for the top 9 if anything.

I would disagree and say we could really use a D upgrade with the intention of having a player who has the upside to eclipse Rielly and also bridge the Muzzin/Brodie contracts running out... but not sure if it's Chychrun himself.

He's an athletic beast with a lot of offensive upside, physicality, etc. But he's also the product of a terrible program and always hurt.

Just remember Brandan Bochenski having that good pre-season with Ottawa and flopped in regular season.

Between Malgin and Robertson, I am kinda inclined to go with Robertson although maybe JT's situation buys us time.
