Does he really upgrade anything in our top 9? I feel like he doesn't really add much of anything anymore and he hasn't really developed into a consistent player. On paper he might feel like a solid mid line forward but he's really not all that good.
I am guilty of wanting him as well but he hasn't looked like he has the spark atm. It's odd when I caught a couple of games this year.

I wonder if people feel the need for a 3C because of concerns over how long JT can play the 2C slot so may need a 3C who can step up when needed.

I think they need a Muzzin replacement if he is out long term/is retiring essentially. Don't see how they progress far without him or another physical defensively strong too 4D

I completely agree on the primary need being the Muzzin replacement.

Tonights lineup. We actually don't really have a 3C. Maybe Holmberg sticks... we can hope so... Otherwise, the third line is hardly every out there for faceoffs, The third line hasn't shown any chemistry, or capability to score consistently.. they are needing an identity. It would be fantastic if Holmberg sticks, but if he's not good enough, or not ready, who actually plays 3C? It's a problem, maybe not as big a problem as a Muzzin replacement though. That ONE game Engvall/Holmberg/Jarnkrok played together, I thought that they were decent.... Let's see tonight.

Forwards
#58 Michael Bunting – #34 Auston Matthews – #88 William Nylander
#15 Alex Kerfoot – #91 John Tavares – #16 Mitch Marner
#47 Pierre Engvall – #29 Pontus Holmberg – #19 Calle Järnkrok
#12 Zach Aston-Reese – #64 David Kämpf – #62 Denis Malgin

Acquiring Horvat adds an entirely new dimension to our lineup. 3 lines that are legitimate scoring threats.

Likely takes Knies, 1st ++ though

I'd be all over it. Him or ROR is the dream.

Tavares-Matthews-Marner
Kerfoot-Nylander-Malgin
Bunting-Horvat-Jarnkrok
ZAR-Kampf-Engvall/Simmonds

And then Robertson/Holmberg + whichever of the 5 NHL ready Marlies is doing best. Even if you have to move Kerfoot to make the money work there's a next man up.

Ya it is not looking ideal in the short or long term, however I wonder if Dubas and co will op to grab a LW and shift Kerfoot back to center for the time being if they can't find a suitable 3C. Some options there but I feel like there are no internal replacement for Muzzin so you gotta grab someone if he is out the season

A quick survey of whose likely to be available on D doesn't look great. Most of the physical guys seem to be more decent #5s than legit second pairing quality.

Looks like there could be more flexibility at acquiring a defensive minded forward to beef up the top 9. Ie ROR if the Blues end up as sellers if they want to swing big. Jenner out of the Jackets could be another option

3 way between Leafs, Vancouver, and Chicago:

Leafs in: Horvat, Murphy
Leafs out: Marner (+?)

Vancouver in: Marner
Vancouver out: Horvat, 1st (+?)

Chicago in: 1st (+?)
Chicago out: Murphy

I proposed it a week ago I’ll propose it again. If you’re shaking up the roster in the off-season:

Marner for Dobson
Sign Horvat 7x7

Cap offsets for Toronto, Leafs get a good young RHD, Islanders get a play who can ignite provide significant offense while subtracting from a position where they are deep (assuming they keep Mayfield). Islanders can afford Marner with Varlamov’s money coming off the books.

Scored 2 goals one game, probably on adrenaline.

Has not looked impressive since.

Malgin is outplaying him, easily.
To be fair, his TOI/G is hovering around 11 minutes. Hard to gain traction when you're on the ice less than 4 min/period.

If trading for ROR or Horvat, it better be for an extension too.
The thing with trading for Bo is that his numbers will do down if he plays in TO, as I don't think he will get as much PP time than in Vancouver and he will be our 3C and on the PK unit.

Seems kind of like the jt signing all over again i like Dobson but 1 for 1 not a chance and tbh I think you keep marner and just split him n matthews up and we don’t need an offensive right shot we need a simple physical defensive right shot Dobson and muzzin would look good though

If we aren't going to give Anderson an opportunity, maybe Anderson could be the main piece in a trade for Horvat. Horvat would be a real nice winger with Tavares-Marner. That could be our version of the Pasta-Bergeron-Marchand line.

Bunting-Matthews-Nylander
Horvat-Tavares-Marner
Robertson-Kerfoot-Malgin
Engvall-Kampf-Jarnkrok

Nylander + Engvall + Holl
For
JT Miller + Horvat (retention) + Schenn

Bunting-Matthews-Miller
Robertson-Tavares-Marner
Kerfoot-Horvat-Jarnkrok
Malgin-Kampf-ZAR

Rielly-Schenn
Giordano-Liljegren
Sandin-Brodie

Samsonov
Murray

I think that definitely makes us a better team, at least right now.
