We should also be thinking of consolidating some of the NHL depth into picks/cap space for the deadline. Our competition spent the majority of their liquid assets last deadline and 2023 picks are much higher value than the 22s were, if there was ever a year to be a major player in the rental market it's this year.

Ideally for pieces that would be good for a playoff run and could give us options to pivot if things go south and we need a core trade (Kane, Horvat, Meier)
You want to sell off some of our depth? That is the exact opposite of what teams should be doing. Move out pieces that don’t fit, such as NAK, sure. No problem. But depth… nah.

Then you list a group of premier forwards that will cost a ton, and walk after this year, the anti-thesis of the we are looking for, in guys with term. Plus you are doing so, without evidence that forward is our greatest need. It’s premature.

Not necessarily sell off but consolidate. Either something like Engvall for a pick we can use on a backup and call Anderson up or package Engvall and Anderson for a bottom-6 upgrade from a team that looks like they're out of it. Having depth is valuable but we have 4 or 5 Marlies that can do a good job in the bottom-6, if we have enough injuries that we need them all at the same time we probably have bigger problems.

If it's premium prices on the big names, it's probably not worth it. But it's shaping up to be a buyer's market based on contenders picks and cap space + draft hype, it could be a good year to weaponize Muzzins LTIR money for cheaper than it would normally cost. Even a pick in the 20s could be enough to move an 8-12th overall into a stacked top-5. Either the rental works out and things are fine or we lose in the first round again and we have a replacement in our back pocket for a core trade.

Yeah not big on Korpisalo .. Folks remember his one great playoff run (his only playoff appearance), but his regular season stats are not that good:

He's had a sub .900 save percentage and GAA above 3 since the 2020/21 season (0.887 SV%).

He had one nice year with a .911 SV% in 2019/20 .. And his rookie season .920 in 2015/16

But between those two seasons he was sub .900. Also his career highs for games played: 37, 33, and then 31.

Basically he's struggled to be a decent goalie in a backup 1B role .. on teams that have generally been more defensive minded.

Columbus is going through a total rebuild currently. That’s not going to show well on a 1B goalie’s stats line.

I've heard several people say the Leafs should trade for Reimer. Here is a list of all goalies who are under 37 years old, played at least 4 games this season and are posting .900%+ save percentage

Adin Hill looks good to me.

Who do you like?

I like Reimer the most because he knows at this point he's a 1B, so knows his role. And while he's not going to be a guy who steals.games, can providing fairly consistent stable goaltending.

Only thing that gives me pause is his history with the team. Things ended a bit awkwardly with him here, which may not make him an ideal guy

With the bottom six starting to click a little (ZAR-Kampf-Malgin looking good, Kerfoot Engvall and Jarnkrok still looking a little out of place) and Kallgren having a good game vs Carolina, trade plans are probably on hold for now.

I'd still like them to pick up a solid defensive defenseman but Holl has been solid the last couple games as well, so what do I know at this point.

I will say I think we need a dedicated 3C/4C. I'm higher on Kampf as a 3C than many on this forum but while Kerfoot/Jarnkrok/Engvall/Malgin can all play C, I don't think any of them should for any length of time.

Maybe Holmberg is the solution.

Holmberg is a possibility, but the two top C’s on the Marlies are playing great there. Adam Gaudette has been solid (10 points in 9 games) and Logan Shaw has 14 points in 10 games, and at 6’3” 210lbs he’s a big boy.

We’ve got some internal solutions to possibly look at more before making tradings.

I think Andrew Peeke is an ideal target if Columbus is willing to move him. They have no reason too but he is what people think Schenn is and is actually good. 70% defensive zone starts and still holding a 40% CF rating over the last year and a half on a terrible team. Could take over Holls role and is locked in for 3 more seasons.

Barring that if Pittsburgh tanks, a Dumoulin/Rutta combo would be interesting.

I don't think the Leafs are overly motivated to move Anderson right now, even for a goalie.

He may end up being a factor for our NHL team at some point this year.

:leafs
G Joonas Korpisalo

:cbj
G Erik Kallgren
LW Pavel Gogolev

That is a fair swap. CBJ saves real money, which should be the main value they get out of Korpisalo at this point. Kallgren is a better fit as a #3 for them and they lack forward prospects for the Monsters right now so Gogolev could be a decent reclamation project for them. They have plenty of contract room so they wouldn't care about taking the extra contract.

Leafs get a more experienced, but also more expensive, #3 goalie while opening up a contract spot for this year and next. If Korpisalo does well enough with us and everyone becomes healthy enough later on, we could possibly flip him for a pick at the TDL.

Interesting target. I'd prefer to keep Kallgren especially if one or both of Murray and Samsonov aren't returning for months if not at all. How about a draft pick (5th) plus a B prospect and a prospect dump like Gogolev? Remember too that Korpisalo's health is as suspect as Matt Murray's.

Justin Holl + 2022 2nd + Anderson/Steeves/SDA for Luke Schenn
The 2023 2nd is gone from the Gio trade. The 2023 4th is gone from adding a pick last year to take Hidelby. The 2023 7th is gone from the McCann trade. There is an extra 2023 3rd to play with from the Dermott trade, but one could also be lost should the Coyotes choose to use it instead of a 2025 2nd from the Ritchie trade.

The 2024 3rd is gone from the Gio trade as well.

So while the situation regarding picks currently isn't completely dire, there are still a few already used up. I would think they need to be careful/smart/strategic about including picks in deals. A pick and one that theoretically high for Luke Schenn wouldn't be it.

Way too much.

Korpisalo isn't a cap dump, but he is effectively waiver fodder with a bit of experience.

Kallgren + Gogolev is all he is worth. Otherwise, I'd rather just take my chances on Kallgren and Petruzzelli until guys become healthy again. Korpisalo is hardly a guarantee.

Korpisalo isn’t very good nor an upgrade. He had one good playoff run but outside of that is barely an NHLer. No thanks.

Call me f***le, but that game has me leaning heavily into the "wait and see" camp with Robertson. He looked like he belonged in the top 6, and with Bunting leaving next year, we will need that ELC.

edit fickle not f***le

Kevin Lankinen is a guy I'd like to bring in if injuries become a long term problem.

I’ve mentioned his name before, but someone like Jake McCabe would be a good target. Probably wouldn’t cost a whole lot to acquire, has another two years left on his contract at a pretty reasonable cap hit (4 million), a lefty that can play both sides, more of a defence first defenceman but can contribute offensively here and there, plays a decent physical style of hockey and brings decent size.

Rielly - McCabe
Brodie - Liljegren
Giordano - Holl/Sandin

Then a forward like Scott Laughton would be ideal for the 3C.

A couple Cs I would like for our bottom 6 from teams that will likely be sellers are Nico Sturm (2Mx3, San Jose) and Curtis Lazar (1Mx3, Vancouver).

Intentionally moving to 4 of 5 goalies under contract who are currently or have been on the IR in the past month would be a dangerous gamble and not worth it in terms of a largely lateral move to a goalie who hasn't had a SV% over .895 in more than 2 seasons.

If things look the same in 20 games I'd like Eller/Acciari
