Got to love the media. I expect this from Toronto guys not US guys

They continue to play like this they won't be in any position to add because they will be out of it by the TDL

That's a big if Dave, this team has been brutal against some extremely piss poor teams

The defense and bottom 6 look baaad, Liljegren will help but we're asking a lot of him to fix this
True but they aren't going to sell even than. There are bigger changes that come in the summer than. It doesn't make sense to let Dubas sell pieces and bring in a new GM in the summer anyways

Bottom 6 looks a lot better with Engvall on the 4th line and Malgin in the lineup.

Not totally upset about Robertson sitting to give Holmberg a shot, but it shouldn't be a regular thing either.

That is one of the dumbest opinions and tweets I've read in a while. I love Weekes but I don't get it here.

Can we just play our f***ing young guys for once and see what they can do?

It's gross how some of you will whine about people overreacting about a 10gp sample size, but are perfectly fine with young players getting the yank because they don't produce in 2 or 3 games in a row. Support Sheldon at all costs, basically.

Double standard.

It's not supporting Sheldon at all.

It's supporting our young players and their development. I wrote this in another thread.

I love Robertson. He is very good with the puck on his stick, elite shot. He is tracking back on defense quite well, and has a very good IQ for the game, and stealing the puck off of players in the dzone. He's also 12th on the team in creating scoring chances, and 14th in puck retrieval of the forwards. He is getting much closer to being a contributor on this team, but some of his game needs work still. That's ok, he's got an amazing work ethic, and I have no doubt that he will get there. Sometimes you play, sometimes you watch and learn. {/quote]
It's not about producing, or not producing. It's about identifying areas of growth, practising on those... taking a game off, and then getting back in, and working on those areas. ----> Development Some have said, the NHL isn't a development league... but then, sometimes it can be as well.

I guess we will see how many games he sits out and how many he ends up playing. This feels like Liljegren in the playoffs all over again.

If he sits for very long, he ends up on the Marlies dominating there, and working on his game. I don't care about the lineup today, or tomorrow... just qualify for the playoffs, become the best we can be, and get the best lineup then... that's the focus right... finally winning some rounds... in the meantime, let's prepare for that. Experiment with the lineup.. give different guys chances. I'd love to see Anderson and Steeves up at some point.

I see Engvall and ZAR getting extended runways here... but I also see those runways getting shorter.

I don't get it. We need goals, and no young player in our system can beat a goalie like Nick. I get he's working on his game, but so is Zegras, so is Pinto, etc. Let him play, give him looks to shoot. He skates well.

Either way, I am far more concerned with our D right now than anything.

Robertson isn't Zegras... We aren't the Ducks.

I'm most concerned about the 2.8% 5v5 shooting of Matthews. It really doesn't matter what else we do this year, who else in the lineup. If that's his stat at game 82, we didn't make the playoffs.

I'm concerned with Marner not shooting the puck at the rate he did last year... start shooting the puck again, take some pressure off Matty.

I'm concerned at how our forwards make careless plays, and give the puck away, leading to high danger chances on us.

If we protect the puck more, our D looks better. (yes it needs an addition, but...)

Definitely don’t mind seeing Holmberg get an opportunity. This SHOULD allow Kampf to move back up to the third line with Holmberg cantering the fourth line.

Out of the box thinking here considering this combination hasn’t been used ever or even in anyones suggested lines but why not try a third line of Bunting - Kampf - Robertson.

Kerfoot - Matthews - Marner
Jarnkrok - Tavares - Nylander
Bunting - Kampf - Robertson
Engvall - Holmberg - Aube Kubel/Malgin/Aston Reese

Trade deadline, we look at improving on Kerfoot. Ideally Bertuzzi slots in.

The shooting % will come back up.

The footspeed on defence will not improve on it's own.

Knies on the 4th or 3rd line would be sweet as well.

Other than Samsonov our offseason has gone very poorly so far. The good news is that Samsonov move looks amazing.

Even including Engvall in that offseason, come on dude you look like the guy that almost got waived last year.

That’s all well and good, but it’s too late for that. They already didn’t do any of that with the core of the team. Those players who were never held accountable now lead the way. Nick Robertson is just following the guys he’s supposed to follow. Treating the second tier players different just causes the core feel even more above discipline and creates resentment in the room.

...and yet strangely Matthews and Marner have both become excellent defensively. Elite guys, drafted high. Robertson isn't close to their level, is physically immature compared to both, and certainly doesn't have the strength Marner had early on. You don't coach every player the same, it simply doesn't happen. Any coach knows this, development has it's own path, and players know this too. This is basic, basic stuff.

I also seem to recall Marner being called out, on the bench... what a whole game ago... did we forget this?

Well robertson isnt a major problem and he has to be given more of a chance. He played 4 minutes against san jose and 6 against anaheim. What can he do with that ice time. He has shown he can score but he needs playing time. Im sure he is thinking why keep singling out robertson as the problem.

Expectations of performance have to be high to be a winning NHL franchise. There is absolutely nothing wrong with Robertson seeming to have played his way out of the lineup in a short stretch. He's exhibited elite finish potential for the NHL level but other areas of his game are unfortunately still deficient. He's not carrying out some of the unsexy basic forward duties consistently. Think of it this way: if you tolerate weak breakout execution, poor choices on zone entries, poor positional play, soft forechecking, etc. because you know he'll score over time while making those errors then you're forging a future incomplete NHL player.

Yes you coach each player individually, but you can’t take two completely different approaches. Players see right through it. Some players on this team clearly do whatever they want without consequences and the rest get to be proxy whipping boys.

Yeah, Marner was benched until Keefe needed him and he folded immediately. Backing out of it makes it worse than not doing it at all.

Talk is cheap. Players care about consistency in approach and consistency in treatment.

Marner for Meier and Karlsson @ 50%

This does nothing to solve our depth issues and we still need a Muzzin replacement, but it's the sort of thing I'd be looking for in a Marner deal. I think we'd love Meier here.

There is 0 chance he’s putting that tweet out there on his own. Robertson is represented by Pat Brisson who is probably getting Weekes to tweet this. It is a bad look on Weekes given Robertson’s poor play driving so far.
