Many aren't looking at it as only 7 games.

We can't help those with PTSD from past Leafs failures, though we understand. ;)

But, it's only seven games. Plenty of time to address all areas of concern. Our goals are for success in the playoffs. That doesn't happen by game seven.

This goes for any discussion on going all in for defenseman and goaltenders.

Our defence can be a bit questionable but I think Liljegren will help that when he's back

We can't buy a goal at the moment, if we're going buying I'd be looking for young forwards with some upside like Hoglander that could potentially ride shotgun on a top 6 line or give our 3rd line some punch

Doesn't change much for me.

Good defencemen help create offence and gain puck posession as well.

Rielly - Top RD
Sandin - Brodie
Gio - Lilly

We definitely need an upgrade at 3C as well, which in itself, should also help the team defensively.

Bunting - Horvat - Jarnkrok
Engvall - Kampf - Simmer

Looks solid to me.

Obtaining your top RD, AND Horvat would be pretty costly, and potentially challenging cap wise. How would you pay for that?

It would be a nice lineup though. Who do you have as your #1LW in this lineup?

Goaltending definitely has covered a lot of the bad that comes from goals against 5 on 5. Samsonov has been a huge player for us, so I agree.

Losing Muzzins quality will be huge for me. I know he hasn't been that same for a bit but when he's good, he's really freaking good. He's physical, he moves the puck and has a hard shot.

Odd comment - OEL has been the defenceman doing the covering and has sacrificed offence because of it. The interesting stats in vancouver are whatever defenceman plays with OEL over a decent sample size gets a bit better than without OEL
Do you watch the Nucks? Bc if you do on a regular basis you would know that they are trying to find fit for OEL to justify his contract. Also, he has been shelter like how Babs did with Dion and Keefe did with Barrie. His offensive output took a deep dive bc he doesnt get any PP1 time and not bc he sacrificed his offence.

Or in a such way. The guys are treating each 7 games as a series like the playoffs. As long as they win 4 games for every 7 games, they are good. lol

From Friedmans 32 thoughts, it's said Leafs have asked about Bear.

7. One defenceman whose situation is coming to a head is Ethan Bear. Players want to play, and he hasn’t dressed yet this year. It’s nothing nefarious, Carolina’s doing what it thinks is best, but he can’t be happy and it’s really hard when you don’t play a game like the one in Edmonton — since you always want to prove your former team to be wrong.

After mentioning it last weekend, a couple of sources indicated there was a trade request last summer. The Hurricanes’ position on this is as follows: they consider Bear a legit NHL defenceman and, since they don’t have cap issues, won’t eat part of his salary for “minimal return.” It’s possible Bear ends up on waivers to see if anyone claims him, and word is he would go to AHL Chicago, just because he wants to play. Vancouver’s shown real interest. Washington did around the draft. It’s believed Toronto’s poked around too. I’m sure there are others, we will see how it ends up.

i have probably watched 80-90% of their games for the past several years.

OEL has been fine - go look at his offensive stats for years, outside of a couple times with more PP goals than even strength goals his ES vs PP points tilts a bit to ES. that isn't his job in vancouver, and cannot be with the rotation of poor puck movers that play with him. he needs to be the main one back always, can't rush, can't get involved, can't pinch etc... he sacrifices a lot of what he could do for the sake of defensive play.

finding a partner to justify his contract, i don't even know what that means relative... well i don't understand it.

Keifer Bellows on waivers. I wonder if an Engvall and Holl for Bellows and Mayfield could work. Or just straight up Engvall for Bellows which saves a million on the cap.

Have to agree to disagree.

Surprised Bellows is on waivers, not a great player, but still had 19 points in 45 games last season and hits quite a bit

He doesn't fit anywhere or do anything special enough. Not a great defensive player. Not a great offensive player. He may hit a little bit and I think some crappy team could take a chance on a waiver claim based on age and prestige, but he doesn't exactly do anything for us specifically.

Would not be surprised to see him clear and maybe another year in the AHL helps him become something. Islanders desperately need good, young talent to take spots eventually.

if mathews gets dealt it will be because he said he has no interest in re-signing and we would call arizona for bedard if they won the lottery first. nhl and arizona would get the local superstar to save the team we would get a massive package that includes one of the next ones. plus.

yes plus.

if you looked at the seth jones deal as reference
The problem with resigning Matthews is the Leafs will not know if he'll resign until after the NTC goes into effect

June 30; Matty talking to Dubas "yeah sure I'll more than likely sign that I mean we're pretty sure the money is OK, and I really love it here, Coach Trotz is a good guy and everything!

July 1 NTC KICKS IN; Matty talking again to Shanny and the new GM "you know what Shanny, my agent was saying that LA, uh nvm that for now, but he was saying that he's kinda worried that Toronto just doesn't have the depth to really win so I think we'll just hold off for now, and you know see what it looks like, after we get to talk to some more people. I kinda think that it would be better maybe if my folks would move here, but yeah no worries! I think for now I'll just concentrate on getting ready for the season. Nice talk."

Things feel stale with the team because they kept their entire middle class intact, spent most of their cap on the Matt Murray gambit and just added a bunch of window dressing on the 4th line. It's like they had an NBA offseason adding a bunch of bench guys but the marquee is the same.
So it's not just me
Well the only reason you trade Matthews is if he clearly indicates he is leaving in UFA. And iIf you're trading Matthews you don't do it for a "quantity" package with minimal cost controlled assets and no blue chip prospects/picks coming back. That's how you stumble into complete mediocrity. It's really bad value.
Again you can't resign him until the NTC kicks in. So on June 30 he can say sure and July 1st leave you at the alter

Not necessarily. Plenty of situations are worse than riding out one year with the Leafs.

Thing is, I can't name a situation where a star, who at that point clearly wants to leave also went out of their way to block trades.

Most cases when a star isn't returning and the team has given up trying to sign them ultimately leads to a trade.

You can talk to your player and his agent before the first. You just can’t make an official offer.
If you haven’t got a strong idea of his intentions before the 1st you aren’t doing your job. And furthermore ideally to maximize your return you would want to trade him somewhere he would sign and that would mean you have to work with Matthews and thus his NMC doesn’t really matter.

D-corps missing Boqvist or is he being scratched?

They do have 3 really nice D prospects who should help replace gudbranson, the first LHD, and 1 of peake/bean

Not a playoff team it appears this year though
I am just talking about this year. I like the 2 kids they got at the top of this latest draft. I don’t think Boqvist moves the needle whatsoever. We’ll see what Ceulemens becomes. I am actively rooting against him because that was the Leafs pick that was moved for Foligno.

Do The Maple Leafs Have 2 First Round Picks On The Table To Win Now? | Kyper and Bourne

SPORTSNET

October 26, 2022

Justin Bourne and Nick Kypreos discuss the Maple Leafs possibly having 2 first round picks on the table this year.

Interesting..wonder what the asking price is.

2.2 mil currently against the cap. Still an rfa after this season too
