Soucy for Holl (salary) + 2nd + B prospect.

Soucy is barely a top 4 d, but one of the few that might be available and brings in what we lack.

He can play both, but he is a bottom pairing defenseman. He is not upgrading Holl, and certainly not for that price as a higher cap rental.
Who would you go after?

I used to really like Nick Jensen as well, but not sure he changes the D core much.

Orlov was another Washington guy I used to love, he's played both sides. We would need Muzzin to be done for the year to make that work, though.

What about Adam Larsson, is he having a good season?

Might fit with Rielly on the top pair.

Rielly-Larsson
Sandin-Brodie

Most teams have multiple needs, and we need a lot of things on the blueline.
I agree. Chychrun might not be perfect, but a big, mobile, puckmoving defenceman would be valuable in it's own way. I'm very worried about our footspeed on the back end.

Can you explain why you want Chychrun, a more offensive LHD, who is oft injured, when our needs are really a defensive, physical RHD?
I totally understand why I’m in the minority in wanting Chychrun. He’s definitely not a perfect fit for us but I do think people forget he’s only 24 years old. His injuries are concerning but he is the most talented dman imo who would be available. I think he would like to come to the leafs and will do whatever it takes for us to win. Also, if we’re going to pay first + I’d prefer it not to be a rental.

If we were to acquire Chychrun, I think multiple moves would need to happen in order for the deal to make sense.

Regarding Chych, this is where my mind is at....
We trade for him, he comes here gets hurt again, dosnt play that well, everyone looses their shit.

We don't trade for him and another team does and he never gets hurt again and goes on to have a steller career, and then everyone here looses their shit cuz we didn't make the trade. Lol.

This is how it would go down. Maybe, but probably not. Just how I envision it due to everything else that's happened. Hahaha

I don't know, I just find it strange that people want to spend the limited currency we have, on something that really isn't a need, leaving the real need still wanting. It's obvious the ask for him is extreme, but that's the road people want to go down? It's just completely illogical.

An offensive LHD, that you obtain to help your PP, but isn't great at D, and is often injured. That kind of sounds like the opposite of what we should be adding.... strange.

The thing is, there are not too many guys available to really upgrade this team... And the ones who can are ridiculously expensive. Jensen, for example, is in the same sort of tier as Holl so I do not really see why the Leafs would pay assets to swap out one for the other.

If Muzzin is out, then our (healthy) team is likely the following:

Rielly - Brodie
Gio - Liljegren
Sandin - Holl

Chychrun can probably upgrade this team, but nowhere near enough to justify the cost. That excludes the fact that he is a LHD who mostly plays LD, doesn't play a style that is exactly what we need, and has major injury concerns. Easy pass for me.

Murphy makes over twice what Holl makes and while he may be an upgrade on Holl once he gets on good teams again (although even that is far from a guarantee), the asking price is likely high and that trade could easily blow up in our faces. Murphy vs. Holl

Matt Roy, to a certain but less risky extent, would be the same as Murphy and may be the better target between the two. Shorter contract, but also cheaper and younger than Murphy. If I am going to non-rental route, he may make the most sense out of the guys that I could see realistically being available. Roy vs. Holl

I would avoid any kind of pricey rental unless we can re-sign them. Zub (Zub vs. Holl) and Severson (Severson vs. Holl) would probably be the only guys on the list who really make any kind of sense, and Zub would be by far my first choice since he has proven he can play with Chabot and therefore should work with Rielly (Brodie and Liljegren become our bottom 4 RD). We could add a new #7 if Muzzin is truly done, but that should be fairly cheap. The rest are either not enough of an upgrade on Holl, they are not available, they are not the right fits for what we need (i.e. Klingberg), or they are LD and we should probably focus on adding a RD (and even then, only Orlov, Graves, and Gavrikov really stand out to me).

At this point, I think I am just running with Holl until better options make themselves available. And especially if Muzzin is not injured long term, not only would we not have the cap space, but we also do not have any kind of real need to add a defenseman at all.

Show us the list of players who are what we need and also available, then.

I don't want to waste the prime years of our core.

Chychrun can play RD or LD, and sure, he isn't ideal, but he adds mobility and puck movement to our D core, and most importantly - he might actually be available and isn't a rental.

I'd love to see what he can do in a better system. In Sarnia, he wasn't just an offensive D, he played good defence too.

If Ottawa falls out of the playoff race and can't re-sign Zub, he would be a great target. Only 2.5 AAV and he's 27, so still young enough that you can justify a long-term extension. Plays top-pair with Chabot, who's stylistically similar to Rielly. People have always wanted a Tanev-style partner for Rielly and I think Zub is the most realistic target.

If we’re looking for a rental with a chance at resigning them Zub, Gavrikov, and Soucy all make sense for us to target.

Adam Larsson if he were available would be a great target.

I would also love Zub. I don't think they will move him, though.

Anything that we could get him signed for is likely a number Ottawa is comfortable with.
