Something I've never quite understood - why don't teams allow players to talk with other teams about extensions more often? If it means they get more back in the trade, why not?
What's good for the trade market might not be so good for the free agent market. More players would have to be amenable in forgoing the UFA market. Teams would also be giving up potential trade assets for players they might be able to acquire a relatively short time later for "free" (cap space).

Who says no if we traded Topi Niemela and a 2nd for Barbashev?

It would still leave assets and space to add Toews or a mid level defenseman.(mcabe, Murphy)

I like Barbashev but I'm not trading our top D prospect plus a 2nd for a rental 3rd liner.

If the rumour is true that he won't extend with a Canadian team,
If the rumour is true that he won't extend with a Canadian team, no thanks.
Because the leafs are so soft, they need nothing but size and grit brought in. 2 heavy defensemen and at least 2 forwards. Not happening this year. Keep the draft picks. Overhaul in summer. I think dubas knows talent, maybe unlucky that all his picks are soft players. Mathews, Marner etc. Should have been surrounded with protection years ago.

I can't tell what mixture of satire vs sarcasm vs serious this is.

But could get Chicago to retain on him and maybe get him at 2-2.5 million per year instead. I would be willing to add more assets to have a good Dman signed for two more years at 2 million
Maybe, but asking a team to pay out $5M for a player to play on another team is a big ask. It cost a 4th rounder for San Jose to pay about $350K on Foligno's deal.

All good points. Still, just seems to me like it maybe should be happening more often than it is, but what do I know.

+1

I think Niemela is similar to Knies in that he might be worth more to us than other teams. Knies because he brings an element we lack, and Niemela because he's our only D prospect who has some hope of being a top 4 guy some day.

Isn't the deadline March 3rd? Why wouldn't a team ask top dollar at this point?

Is that asking top dollar? Sounds like that's asking top dollar then adding a 1st onto it.

I can see Gavrikov going for a similar price that Manson brought when he was traded - a 2nd and a decent to good prospect. This 3x draft pick including a 1st sonsense is over the top.

I dont know, maybe only the fact team dont have much cap space eo not nrcessairly interesting by long term player at high salary but im totally agree
Noting Johnston specifically said he WON'T talk extension.

I didn't say it will be in toronto but only the fact columbus allowing team to talk with gavrikov and what he will bring via trade whatever where...

But if i wont extend, no chance hes coming toronto

Maybe they are thinking like the auto dealers, where they are charging more for used cars than new cars?

Yes it seems to be. They have no reason to put an exact sticker price out there.
Columbus only motivation is to put themselves in the best position to draft Bedard.
Players will be dumped by the 3rd.

Hagel wasn't a veteran rental though. He was a young player with upside on a cheap deal which was attractive to Tampa cause they needed the cap flexibility. In a vacuum the trade package was too much given that big stars net that kind of return, but it's obviously panning out well now.

Plus if it didn’t work out they could always flip him this deadline for a 1st+. It was an overpay but with a pretty high floor on the potential downside in a worst case where they missed the playoffs this year and he was “only” pacing for his Chicago numbers.

You all already know I'm simping for Kane, but one thing he should improve also worries me...

He should be on that #1 power play, but that also means we'd likely have to run 5 forwards to make everyone happy...which is also something I can see Tampa totally exploiting during the playoffs(scoring short handed goals).

Because either way that's a joke.

Starting high in a negotiation is fine but no one should come even close to biting on that. He's worth maybe 1 2nd max. A 3rd sure.

I don't get the love for that player.

Explains why they are sitting him out. Can't let teams see him play for that price. I'd say there's no way, but some GMs really just will match close to that.
True enough and if they do they'll regret it.

i'd take taveras off :/.

The entry kills us with JT as he fumbles the puck. Love his net presence but try and get william or matthews there with kane and marner.

Or alternatively and the better idea probably is to split JT Mitch William and then Matthews and Kane or w.e.

Not sure, you are saying Kerfoot is providing offense?

Kerfoot is UFA anyway.

Yes, Kerfoot is a UFA. If we can upgrade on him, or a sideways move that brings in a bit more size and grit.. I'm for it.

But Kerfoot has provided very good value for his contract, and compared to similar contracts. What six points in seven games two years ago in the playoffs, and around 0.5 PPG for his contract. yes, that's good depth offense for his contract. Probability is you get nothing from anyone on the Marlies offense.

My only worry with Patrick kane is his current injury. Would suck for this to turn into folingo 2.0 if he’s not healthy.

Hopefully he’s past that injury and is healthy the rest of the season.

Watch this and tell me he couldn’t still do that with the Leafs this year… CLUTCH!!

I watched the game yesterday against habs and i stop after 10 minute... it was a disaster and we will see it in next3 leafs how trash is the team around him...

I dont know if we cant blame kane for anything... i giving you just an exemple... chicago had 2 pp, kane was able to drive the puck in, decking and find his trammate creating good scoring chance but everything it was not kane with the pucj, hawks lost it in the next 5 second.

Everyone whos looking at kane stats, just watching hawks playing!!! I jist dont understand how columbus was able to be worst and i dont know how you can expect when hes playing with player who cant create anything or keep the puck enought long to give him a shoot to be open...

You removing toews and kane and Jones and you get an AHL team...
