If the Leafs trade for Meier, it won’t be for a one and done scenario. You can re-sign him for 8.5x8 contract. It’ll be tight next year but definitely doable. Afterwards with the cap jumping significantly and contracts coming off the books, it’s definitely doable.
Say goodbye Nylander

Seems simple and obvious.....you keep your financial flexibility for when your core players need new contracts.

Sad that has to be explained more than once those who cannot understand this very simple concept. But that's OK, most message boards have all different levels of......understanding the obvious.
Realistically how much do you expect Matthews/Marner/Nylander/Tavares to make on their next deals?

Apparently someone posted on reddit that meier is willing to take 8x8 if it is with a contendor. Now say if this is true - (this entire point is moot if not) then i'd argue signing meier to 8x8 could be considered a play on flexibility just in case william/mitch ask for way too much money. All of a sudden meier becomes your current willy deal.

And this is coming from a guy who loves nylander.

Not saying it would work this way or w.e but something to think about in terms of meier. But yeah agreed - you want the most flexibility when the big 3 need to be signed. Although Im also one of the few that wouldnt hand a 15M open cheque book to matty.
8x8 is a good deal, seems to good to be true.

No one would ever argue flexibility isn't good, who wouldn't want that?

Hopefully JT with someone else unless it’s for around 6 mill

Nylander will get 9 or 10 somewhere

Marner and Mathews’s will get around 12
Let's say you're right - 12+12+10+6=40. That is less than they collectively make right now which would mean you don't need to create any cap room. I am thinking Matthews - 13.5, Marner - 11.5, Nylander - 9, Tavares - 5, so roughly the same all in.

Say goodbye Nylander
Not necessarily, there’s definitely a way to fit him under the salary cap next year (which would be the most difficult to fit under moving forward). It’s good having players like Robertson, Holmberg and Anderson who can fill in spots for basically league minimum next season to help with the cap situation. Not to mention between Liljegren, Sandin, Giordano and Timmins you have a total of only 4.7 million.

If Nylander says he's not signing this off-season for less than 10M and Meier says he'll sign long term for 8.5 who would you rather keep?
That's a big if.
Nylander takes over games know, his speed will be still strong in 8 yrs .
Personally Nylander.

Dubas is hanging his stars out to dry if he doesn’t give them some help, at least occasional, chip in help. There are no answers on the Marlies, we don’t need warm bodies that look “okay”, we need some pizzazz, no vanilla, jam, grit, some finish, something. In the playoffs you tend to neutralize the top players on both teams to the point its a sawoff, our depth is going to be key for the occasional contribution.

As an aside, Noodles made some good points today on Leafs lunch, and with regard to Engvall in particular he mirrored my view that he doesn’t think he will be effective when the ice gets tighter, just like last year.

Sure we can use a D man, but for me the glaring need is depth at forward. I expect/hope Dubas to make a couple moves.

I'm in the same boat. Gives us better depth in case of injuries, and I'm optimistic that ROR isn't on a steep decline but rather slumping a little. If he's willing to sign for ~$5.5 million per, it's also very plausible that they could retain him beyond this run.

Only problem is that Dubas loves his "one-stop shopping" and I don't see any obvious targets on the Blues' defense. Bortuzzo is big, cheap, and right-handed but his minutes have been really low this year and we've already got Sandin/Holl/Timmins/Benn/Kral for the bottom pair.

A Kane + McCabe package is intriguing but I'm less confident Kane would be interested in re-signing in Toronto and the injury concerns are a major red flag given the cost and rental status. Would probably also almost definitely cost at least one of Knies/Niemela/2023 1st.
I don't think ROR is an overly great fit (in the event that his acquisition cost is at least a 1st) as a 3C though. I really don't know if he'd be willing to re-up here with that as his "permanent" spot either. That stated, I'd obviously be all for bringing him in - and retaining him - if I were to be wrong about either point.

Don't know, Holmberg is scoring pretty freaking amazingly for his minutes. Closer to JT/Bunts than he is to Kerfoot/Engvall.

*not that I don't think we need to upgrade our 3C, I'm just making a comment on how good Holmberg has been in the ~10 mins he gets a game.*
Why is Clifford not on the Leafs after seeing this. Our bottom 6 could really use his offence.

That's a big if.

I think they are near equal players so I'd personally take the cheaper player all day long. Then you factor in that Meier has actually fought 3 times in his NHL career which is not a large number but it's bigger than zero. Also - the last year of an 8 year deal for Meier he will be 34 and Nylander would be 35 going into the last year of his deal, minor difference but once they Tavares' age we'll likely be counting down the years on their deals.

Sure trading 1 of their top 3 D for vancouver 5-6th D will upgrade the team...

Whatever what most of leafs fans telling against Holl, right now hes one of top 3 leafs D. You can like what hes doing or dislike it but don't change the fact hes a top 3 D in that D right now

And please dont tell me the second pair is sandin and liljegren who played likeb16-17 every game unless if leafs had a huge lead and tried to rest brodie/rielly a little bit

Exactly people see in Chychrun what they hoping for and not what the player really is.. you can add Parayko to that list

I see Chychryn like a good 3rd D on a second pair to solidifying a D but if we read post about chychrun here, some people talking about chychrun pratically the same way than a younger victor Hedman...
This is exactly why we wont win a cup. Holl should never be a top 4 dman. He is at best a 6/7 in the playoffs when the going gets more extreme

When you consider quality of team mates when he's on the ice this is pretty impressive.

Yeah was surprised but if it is seems like a no brainer imo.

But I don't think Kyle is going to make a splash unfortunately. Wrong move imo but let's see.

I think he's been taking the season off. Wouldn't be surprised if MVP-level Kane is back on a competitor.

Wouldn't it be sumthin if Kane forces his way to Toronto and everyone eats crow.

People get lost in the idea of value - but if Kane literally says. "It's Toronto and Toronto only"... we're talking compensation, not value. ( for the retention)

Not that I think he will...but I definitely think he wants out of Chicago AND has a short list.

Would I love to see a soft deal on a 50% Kane...with a interview of him saying he wants to win, play with Matthews and had no other teams as an option.

If the acquisition cost is similar, would you prefer Ryan O'Reilly or Patrick Kane?

Nylander - Matthews - Kane
Bunting - Tavares - Marner

is sexy, but so is

Matthews - Tavares - ROR - Kampf

Kane all night long... this question for me is as close of who youre choosing between jt or marner

Nah he can play 4th to complete a good top 3 like edmundson did with STL or Kempny with washington or whatever, but yes leafs need an other top 3 D for sure

Just saying if Kane has anything left in the tank, he wants to be here to play with Matthews basically. It would mean Marner can stay with Tavares and Matthews gets a playmaking winger in Kane.

Which means Nylander is free'd up to be put in a Kessel type role. I think he has shown he can generate for himself this year, and I think he would roast other teams bottom 6 and pairings. Bonus points if we got Wily and Knies was an NHLer, we'd have a legit 3rd line.
I have been saying this for a long time.
Two trades

Kane and barbashev

Bunting matthews kane
Knies tavares marner
Barbashev janrok nylander (this line can feasts on 5/6 dmen)
Xxx kampf xxx

Kane, with a double retain and Domi please.
Kerfoot out and Comtois brought in.
Trade the 1st, mid prospects, etc.

Bunting Matthews Marner
Kane Tavares Nylander (swap wings when necesary)
Comtois Domi Jarnkrok
ZAR Kampf Engval
