Saw both Nemec and Hughes were considered off-limits in a trade and it got me thinking. Assuming their young NHLers are even more off-limits (Hughes, Hischier, Mercer, etc). I'd argue the best pieces they have left available are their 1st, Holtz, Casey, and Mukhamudullin. Depending on your opinions on those players (can't say I'm high on Holtz or Shakir), we can pretty easily at least compete with that package for Meier.
Same goes for Carolina. Not sure about how they feel about moving Jarvis, but besides him I dont think they have a guy whos worth Knies. Their prospect depth is incredible though in Morrow, Blake, Gleb, Nikishin, Kochetkov, Koivunen, Rees, Drury, Gunler, Suzuki, Lucius, and more.... but if we'd be willing to do 1st + Knies + Robertson it would gut our pool, but I don't think Carolina would be able to match without taking 3~ of those guys with their 1st (obviously that's my own opinion).
If Buffalo wants him there's likely nothing we can do though. Quinn, Krebs, Savoie, Kulich, Ostlund, Rosen? Yeah they could make a pretty insane package and not even touch their NHL team.
Who's left with young impactful assets, cap space, a need for a 1W, and contending now/soon? LA? Minny? Detroit? Seattle? None of them feel like they have a step up on us besides LA who I doubt SJ would trade Meier to and Minny who is in cap hell.
