Friedman reiterated this morning on the 32 Thoughts podcast that there are work visa/COVID related non-vaccination issues with Bertuzzi and crossing the boarder that is causing Canadian teams to be cautious about him.
That plus his injuries/down season kind of make him look like a waste of time. I'm sure Tampa will pick him up for cheap and he'll immediately bounce back, but he doesn't really seem worthwhile for the Leafs

Why would anything covid/pandemic related even matter these days with regards to crossing the border? Its over and done with. We're thankfully pretty much back to normal life.

He couldn't explain it perfectly but said that if Bertuzzi is traded to a Canadian team he loses his American work visa, and that there is something in American law that would prevent him from easily crossing the border.

So he could play home games in Canada but not travel to the US.

If he is moved to an American team he retains his visa and nothing changes. He is free to cross the border.

This is because Bertuzzi isn't vaccinated.

It's funny how Friedman is saying that Dubas is making it seem like he's going after everyone to confuse everybody about what his real plan is.

Nobody outside the Leafs FO seems to actually know their plan and it almost seems like they're seeing which GMs/Orgs are leaking information to the media. So far the teams we've been tied to are Vancouver (lol Rutherford just HAD to let the media know the Leafs "asked" about Myers??) and Chicago (Kyle Davidson leak gate 2.0?). None of the actual insiders have made any serious commitments about what we're even looking for because they'd be risking their credibility (except for Pagnotta who has literally 0) and I honestly believe they have no idea besides their own speculation.

Nobody would pay our full price, so maybe if we retain someone will..... the moving target...

Chychrun is already on a sweetheart deal. getting him even down below 4mil per would be an absolute bargain! Hopefully the Coyotes get a haul if that's the case

That whole Myers rumour was so weird. Makes no sense on many different levels. It really does feel like something like that. It definitely was Vancouver centric and they fed the right people to report it. It's not impossible the Leafs talked to Canucks about it either, because why not. Just looking at the recent LeBrun article from rival execs, they all think the Leafs need a big defenseman.

I'm not sure I buy that Dubas/Leafs are doing that intentionally like 500 IQ masterminds, it seems really not worth the effort to mask whatever they are doing. There have been legit rumours that turned into reality through the last few years. For example, Leafs were tied to the Foligno rumours for weeks.

To me it's being able to clear the front of the net, most our d struggle with that aspect.
I wish i could like this point 100 times

We do not have one dman who can clear the front of the net
Just watch holl against jenner last game when jenner scored. Holl who is our biggest dman didnt have the strength to shut jenner down.
We dont need fighters we need guys who can keep the net clear by battling with the opposing forwards

We dont have one right now that does it

Myers makes some sense for the Leafs cause of his contract structure if Vancouver was willing to give him up for no return or with retained salary.

Leafs use him this playoffs, then pay his July 1st signing bonus of 5M. Then he's only owed 1M to play next season and the Leafs would deal him this off season to a team that's concerned about real dollars.

Myers would play as a third pairing Dman for us which is an absolutely massive difference from his current role as the Dman who night in, night out plays the toughest matchups on a bad team.

It would be a creative way to not give up assets for a D upgrade.

Saw both Nemec and Hughes were considered off-limits in a trade and it got me thinking. Assuming their young NHLers are even more off-limits (Hughes, Hischier, Mercer, etc). I'd argue the best pieces they have left available are their 1st, Holtz, Casey, and Mukhamudullin. Depending on your opinions on those players (can't say I'm high on Holtz or Shakir), we can pretty easily at least compete with that package for Meier.

Same goes for Carolina. Not sure about how they feel about moving Jarvis, but besides him I dont think they have a guy whos worth Knies. Their prospect depth is incredible though in Morrow, Blake, Gleb, Nikishin, Kochetkov, Koivunen, Rees, Drury, Gunler, Suzuki, Lucius, and more.... but if we'd be willing to do 1st + Knies + Robertson it would gut our pool, but I don't think Carolina would be able to match without taking 3~ of those guys with their 1st (obviously that's my own opinion).

If Buffalo wants him there's likely nothing we can do though. Quinn, Krebs, Savoie, Kulich, Ostlund, Rosen? Yeah they could make a pretty insane package and not even touch their NHL team.

Who's left with young impactful assets, cap space, a need for a 1W, and contending now/soon? LA? Minny? Detroit? Seattle? None of them feel like they have a step up on us besides LA who I doubt SJ would trade Meier to and Minny who is in cap hell.

Over who exactly? He'd be our 8th best defenseman.

I assume the Myers talks were before they settled for Timmins.

Dubas doesn’t want anyone to know what he has cooking all these rumors seem like a smoke screen for a different move. The thing with Toronto is for (next season) he has his defence already locked in.. Brodie/Moe/Gio/Sandin/Lilly/Timmins.

Makes it a lot easier for this and next season to know what he can do when trying to add a forward.

It's more interesting with how bored I am to believe they're asking on every player to confuse and see which FO are leaking shit.

Willy going to get paid, either with the leafs, or someone else I think he will somewhere close to 12m plus
No shot, unless the cap jumps astronomically. He's looking at 9M imo

Clarke was a total cotton-headed ninny-muggins at the WJC, reminded me of Jake Gardiner. If LA can offload Turcotte at the same time, they’re laughing.
Marner looked pretty terrible at the WJC, luckily that tournament means very little.

I can see the Devils making Mercer available if pushed. They probably have a standing offer with Holtz and others as you suggested, but if it looks like they're going to be outbid they might reconsider.

I'm talking myself into Wade Allison. He's big, hits a lot, he'd be tied with Tavares for 4th on the Leafs in goals/60 at 5v5. He's signed through next season under 800k. He might be a change of scenery guy. He put up significantly better numbers than Knies is currently in his 19 year old season at WMU and has never been able to build off that but he could flourish given the right circumstances. He's been a positive defensive player since he's stepped into the league and has seen a jump in his offensive GAR this season. I could see him having a Bunting-esque trajectory.

I have been a big Allison fan in each viewing of the Flyers. Any word on him being available tho? Not sure there’s any reason they’d give him up.

chrychun at 50% retained would be a huge boon for whoever lands him. Cost to acquire aside, he’s I’d say a borderline top pairing defenseman, but he’d be making less than 2.5 mil for 2 more years after this one
