Dwane Rolison like 17 years ago???
Yeah I don’t get the goalie thing either unless there is some sure fire #1 available. Sure we are in trouble if both are starters go down but who wouldn’t be?
Doesn’t seem like something we should waste assets on. Big sive Dave all over again

If Murray was LTIR’d till the playoffs and we added Korpisalo for a 3rd or something that would be fine just for insurance, but that’s because I know for a fact Korpisalo can steal a series if he gets hot.

Sandin was going to be the locked into the #7 D role until the end of his RFA contract, so the Sandin trade was the one that made the most sense, not the least.

IMO there is no one available out there who moves the needle enough for the Leafs to move the first. If you watch Dubas, It's a big impact add for a 1st, or nothing. The only rental worth a 1st the Leafs have already acquired.

I see all these marginal upgrades or sidegrades being proposed for mediocre UFA's or wingers with a big ticket while wiping out the rest of the Leafs draft capital and shake my head. The benefit has to outweigh the cost, and nothing I see proposed comes remotely close to doing that.

Especially if the first is moved for someone who ends up preventing the Leafs from re-signing ROR. That's poor asset management IMO.

Do we really want to pay through the nose to upgrade 10% on the 2nd or 3rd line? Seems like a real waste. Targeted adds at the right place? Sure.

And why with Rielly and McCabe here long term, why is Chychrun even being mentioned? The Leafs have Brodie and Liljegren on the right, so Chychrun would be a luxury incremental add at a huge cost.

I really don't see much out there, and I'm shocked people want to go all in and leave no futures when next season Boston and Tampa will be hurting big time, and provides the clearer path out of the Atlantic.

I agree. I do think we could still potentially use a middle 6 winger, but I’m not offering any significant assets to get it done at this point.

Who can you bring in that would make you feel less insecure?
It’s not like I’d be comfortable with any goalies that are going to move in a playoff game.

I don’t care to speculate, just giving my green light as a fan to pursue that if they want to. We know what the asset pool is, we have a good idea what would represent an upgrade on Sammy and Murray.

Sure. He was also a sub .900 goaltender 2 of the last 3 years.
Murray can also steal a series if he gets hot but his ability to do that gets much lower if we sit him for 4 months going into the playoffs.
Korpisalo isn’t an upgrade on Murray

the premise of the post is built on there is no one available out there who moves the needle.

I don't know if that's the case. If it is, then you evaluate.

But I wouldnt be upset if the first was used to get a legit top 6 winger. Now if that top 6 winger is a retained connor garland then f*** that.
I think Garland would be a sneaky under the radar get.

About 6 weeks back Dhaliwal was saying Garland was a potential buyout candidate, which seemed absolutely insane to me. But apparently they want to clean house.

If that truly is the case, how much more than Kerfoot + prospect would be required to get Garland at $3 million ($1.9 million retained)? They can flip Kerfoot for a pick or 2, so they get solid value while saving money and 3 years of dead cap space.

They missed the boat on Korpisalo , IMO.

I think thinking has changed since Tocchet took over.

somewhere around 9.5 to 10 probably but depending on what happens this playoffs if it goes badly one of the big boys is probably gone.
I disagree that one of them is gone unless they want to be.
Nylander at 10M, Matthews at 14, Marner at 12 and Tavares at 5M will take up a smaller % of the cap then they do now at their current cap hits if the cap jumps in 2 years like it is supposed to.

I actually think someone like Gustafsson could be a decent D add for a team like Ottawa. Would they have a F that would suit us?

I just don’t see the value in it. There isn’t anyone available that is an upgrade on what we have already.

Another thing as I rationalize keeping Gustafsson, our PP has sucked during the postseason. He is the kind of PP merchant we haven't had since Barrie. He could provide a different look there if there are struggles again.

I fully do not expect this, but imagine Tavares just rolls league min deals from the end of his contract on. Like spezza basically did.

If this was last year and they were offloading Nick Paul things would have lined up better.

Yeah at first I though there had to be aonther move coming, and our trading partner preferred a 1st to Sandin but now I just think he was moved because there no path for Sandin to develop further here. Unless of course a trade is made 10 minutes from now. ;)

Now just trying to figure out what's up with Gusty, maybe they see him as someone who can help us in the playoffs? I mean Tyson Barrie isn't exactly a defensive stalwart and he plays hockey pretty well, I guess we'll see.
I think that Gusty is here in case something happens to Rielly, and to give Gio (or any LD) rest down the stretch. I believe that Schenn will spot in for Holl depending on opponent until one clearly grabs the job.

But it's such a great feeling to have D depth, and G depth.

This is a lineup composed of nothing but depth. Might actually be better than some bottom feeders. lol

Gustafsson - Schenn/Holl
Benn - Timmins
Kral - Mete

I wouldn’t be so quick to trade Gus. He is great insurance against an injury to Rielly. According to google roster expand after the deadline so we can bring up McCann as a 13th forward Saturday and would have space to sign Knies if we sent him back down later.

Well that would be ideal forsure.

Well... I mean DeBrincat hasn't signed an extension, his QO is $9 mil... I think he'll eventually sign... but that's about it for anything that is anywhere near reality. No chance they could move anyone else of any value.

Yeah I liked the Nick Paul trade for Tampa before he killed us in game 7. They just continue to find perfect roll players down there. And they don’t care what it costs to bring them in cause their scouts find top 15-20 players from the draft in later rounds.

Hopefully they lost their golden touch with the Jeannot deal.

Can't see it. One of our beat reporters remarked that Schenn wouldn't be happy as the 7th D, I really think he'll be in there the vast majority of the time.

I also just think it becomes bad asset management to keep 9 NHL defensemen when some are expiring. Ideally in a package for a forward, but if nothing else recoup a pick to use in next years trading splurge.

There is definitely some wishful thinking on my part but we do benefit from the cap jump happening after Willy and Matty can sign their deals.
And we would have a bit of a cap squeeze the year that Mathews and Nylander are on their new deals and Tavares is still on his old one.
