Other issues aside Keefe has indicated they envision McCabe playing the left side regularly, so I don't see adding Chychrun as a possibility.
Offer Rielly straight up.
he has term which Arizona would covet. ...then Chy gets hurt, and we're screwed

The ask for Chychrun is 2 first + top prospect.

2023 1st (BOS)
2024 1st (TOR)
Liljegren

Chychrun McCabe
Rielly Brodie
Gio Schenn

Yes, that's been the ask for over a year now... Everyone knows that, every GM knows that... and Chychrun sits at home watching hockey instead of playing, because no GM thinks he's worth that. We aren't going to meet their price.

I mean, I have no problems sending them two firsts, and any prospect not named Knies... but it's going to be Chychrun at 50%, Crouse, and Vejmelka for Kerfoot, Holl, Murray, two 1sts and a prospect not named Knies.

I don't think any defenceman will be moved. I think they'd like to avoid playing Timmins in the playoffs

Chychrun can effectively play the right side as well, so that really isn't a deal stopper. The ask is though... I posted above how I'd meet their ask... but it requires more pieces, and I don't really see Arizona dropping their price that far, for the assets asked for.

I dont think we are moving Lily tbh... I think Gio has vouched for that guy... We'll see

At this rate I don't think Chychrun is moving and Armstrong will be slapped with a fine.

I really don't think they would have given him a 2 year extension if there was any concern with his ability.

It's entirely possible the Leafs stand pat and just go with the flow but seems really weird. They have a possible hole in their forward depth and I think they have the assets to really upgrade there.

ZAR would be ideal if he was the 13th forward. He's fine and what not but Leafs could add a ~20 goal scorer instead.

Bunting - Matthews - Marner
Tavares - ROR - Nylander
XXX - Kampf - Jarnkrok
Kerfoot - Acciari - Lafferty
ZAR

mix and match the bottom lines to fit whatever.

So we'll roll with *9* defensemen for the playoffs? That's a huge waste IMO. They need to turn 1-2 D into a LW to balance the roster.

Rielly-Lilly
Gio-Schenn
McCabe-Brodie
Benn-Timmins

Extras are Gustaffson & Holl IMO. Gustaffson is the most sheltered D in the league and not someone I expect they want to play tight postseason hockey, but if he's a #7 then Timmins is your 8, and Holl's gone either way.

I respectfully disagree on the offense. He had 1G1A last year against the same opponent we are facing this year. He had a career year last year with 51 points.

Based on the roster he would be playing with worse linemates this year, or at least linemates that he's shown very little chemistry with until this point in the season, his worst offensively since his first year in Toronto.

There is nothing to indicate he will do better than his 1G1A last year in a career year against the same opponent. I'd say it's pretty reasonable to think he will do worse.

You make a fair point that he's likely underappreciated for his defensive game. However I would argue even that was soured after he took an idiotic penalty in the offensive zone on a PK causing a 5 on 3 in a game 6 elimination game which directly lead to Tampa Bay tying the game. That doesn't eliminate his defensive game as a whole, but when he's contributing very little offensively, he can't afford to take stupid penalties. Certainly not ones that lead to such a significant goal against.

If the Leafs acquire another top 9 winger, I think the goal would be someone who can score more with the hope that ROR could provide an equally effective defensive game as Kerfoot.

Even with my personal dislike for Kerfoot, I'd agree that with Engvall gone it doesn't make sense to just unload him for nothing. However, I think he can be upgraded on quite easily, especially with the new complexion of the bottom 6.

All fair points to be sure but as far as the chemistry point goes, it's all up in the air to how the team will mesh with all the new faces. An argument could be made we should stop tinkering so much with a top 5 team. Yea, the penalty sucked as his stick rode up Hedmans as Hedman lifted it but that was him being a terror on the PK and a pretty fluky play. That wasnt him stupidly sticking Hedman in the face right? (Man, did every call go against us that series).

As it stands, the team is cap compliant with maybe the best defensive depth in the league while adding a ton of sandpaper to the bottom six and augmenting the top 6 with ROR and still have Knies on the way.

Im right along with you that if a good deal comes along for something better than Kerfoot, lets pull the trigger, but who exactly is that?

What names did you have in mind?

Agreed. Doesn’t make sense carrying Rielly, McCabe, Brodie, Liljegren, Giordano, Schenn, Holl, Gustafsson, Timmins and Benn. That’s 10 NHL caliber defencemen.

Then you look at our bottom six, Jarnkrok, Kampf, Lafferty, Aston-Reese, Acciari and Kerfoot. Some secondary scoring to replace Aston-Reese has got to be the goal.

Maybe Dubas stands pat though and thinks Knies can step in and provide some secondary scoring in the bottom six?

While I agree with this opinion of his, he's kind of lost the plot this year, and is saying some really out there things.

Like Quick for goalie insurance?

A team that just moved Engvall to open up cap is going to add a 38 year old 5.8 mill goalie with an .878 to be their #3. Right.

At least if there is a semblance of a rumor of that somehow happening, then say so. But to speculate that without basis? Crazy.

I'd like to think Knies is a depth option, not a go to. I'd be shocked if they hinge a pretty important role on a player that might not join them until the last week of the season. Leafs can't count on him being ready for the NHL right away either. There's no way in my eyes. They didn't change 30% of the roster just to give Knies a spot.

Yea pegging a newcomer who has been playing in NCAA as our Savior isn't the call and I think he'll be soaking it all in and have others to show him the way. Will definitely look forward to it when he hits the ice wearing the blue and white.

As many have said I think one or two more trades come Friday and we should be good.

The guy's on a 40 point pace without playing the top 6 and no top unit PP time.

His defensive impact this season has also been really good.

I want him gone, but he's not moving if they're not getting good value for him.
More like a 35 point pace and its still 3 goals at even strength for $3.5M which is way too much for his production. I don't think he gets moved unless they have been sitting on a standing offer for him which seems really unlikely for a pending UFA. They could have dropped his substantial cap hit in the O'Reilly deal but he is managements last hope to show the Kadri trade was not a complete fail. In fairness all those D zone starts and playing with Kampf who does not have an attack setting has killed his offense this year but I can't see a playoff club paying value for that cap hit and 1.52 pp60. And a non playoff team will just wait for the summer.

They seem to be okay with his cap hit on the books but he won't be getting 14:42 icetime any more. As a pending UFA and in what may be his last playoff for a while I doubt anyone on the team outworks him so I don't really want him gone that badly. If they needed his cap space for a new addition at forward he would be in St Louis so I expect he isn't preventing anything from happening.
