Both Boone Jenner and Tom Wilson are pipe dreams. Need to focus on realistic targets.

I do think Dubas will be going for another middle 6 forward at the expense of Holl/Kerfoot.

His pathway to playing time is/was now blocked for the rest of his RFA contract.

That was not a sustainable situation.
I don't know about that. Holl and Schenn probably would've been gone this summer, and although Rasmus would be RFA in 2024 you'd have Gio and Brodie as UFAs as well. IMO there was still a way to have him play top 4 in the future as McCabe can play the right side.

But I do feel like he probably wanted out, especially given that he'd be relegated to the press box for the rest of this season with Schenn and McCabe joining the team.

After all the changes ... that 3rd. line is hole.

In that respect, I see no real material difference between having Kerfoot or Engvall there. At least Kerfoot competes

This isn’t revisionist history just because he’s not a leaf anymore as some might claim, I said the same back when his contract dispute was ongoing, but Sandin came across like a guy whose play never justified being in the top 4 yet expected to be handed those minutes anyway

Putting aside the pending UFAs, next season's blueline already features a "signed six" (Rielly/Brodie/McCabe/Liljegren/Giordano/Timmins). While that group does have its question marks (Giordano's advancing age, the potential injury risk associated with Timmins), the PP should be covered by Rielly and Timmins while the other four man the PK units. I understand the rationale behind trading Sandin even though I don't absolutely love the idea.

I suppose, but as we've seen this season, having all 6 guys playing healthy together is pretty rare. But I'm guessing Sandin wanted more of a guarantee than just being an injury replacement or bottom pairing guy.

I'd definitely like a 7th d-man of some quality to mix in with that group for next season (which is probably a bridge to be crossed at a later time). I agree with you on both points.

Good thing Knies is a transition fiend as well. Him + A guy like Terry would go a long way

Yeah if they don't do anything I think they're expecting an immediate impact from Knies in the bottom-6 or they're hoping Bobby or Holmberg are playoff ready.

There's pretty clearly 1 piece missing. No way you can justify going into the playoffs with ZAR starting.

There’s always a way around money/cap. People for years have been saying “ how will the Leafs stay competitive when you’re paying Tavares 11 million a year” look at the team Dubas has put together up against the cap every year. It’s super deep, easily the deepest team in 20 years.

There’s always a way around the cap etc, this is why teams have executives strictly who work the cap

That's partially true to be sure. But we've been stung by cap constraints as well - losing Hyman for example, and losing a few picks to move off bad salaries. Dubas has done an admirable job of not getting us into too many contractual quagmires, especially compared to his predecessor.

Exactly, the leafs kept blocking his pathway with suggests they probably didn’t see him grabbing that top 4 spot and sold high.

I’m pretty sure there was a discussion between both sides that he’d be moved if the right deal came through

unfortunately that's an area they're really going to miss Sandin. Going to be a lot tougher for an already weak bottom 6 to transition the puck going from Sandin to Schenn. The good news is they got back a 1st round pick to do something about it, it's just a question of if they can do the right thing

Dubie is obviously into the "get two players at once" style, so obviously we're going after Crouse and Chychrun next.

How many 1sts did we have left again?

I think there is more than 1 left. I think 2.

I agree - you'd have to think we're interested in packaging Kerfoot, a D, and our new 1st rounder from the Sandin trade for a 2LW which still leaves 8D on the roster, 9 if they plan on keeping Benn up.

Schenn is a 6th/7th guy. Not sure I even want Gus to play. A 1st is good. But I would have taken Jensen over all 3 of those assets combined.

We get rid of Engvall, Anderson, and Kerfoot in this scenario and we still don't have enough room to bring up McMann, Holmberg, Knies. Getting real tired of Dumbass leaving us with so much depth I can't watch our overcooked prospects get a run with O'Rielly for fun.

Well Washington re-signed him so clearly they didn't want to part with him. It looks like they are doing a retool and hoping to make another run or two while Ovi still has some juice left.
