I don't think it's for the sake of it. It's quite clear the Leafs want more physicality and strength in the lineup and in their depth.
It's just a lot of turnover. This should have been done last off-season or something. Probably wasn't possible of course but I think they needed to be more pro-active much before the trade deadline.
I love Engvall, but you can't deny he turns into a ghost when the games tighten up. If they can bring in another quality winger, that trade looks fine IMOOkay but like... seriously. Waking up to that was insanity.
I hate the Engvall trade. No matter how people clowned on him, he was always an effective defensive 3L that had the ability to score 40 points. I'm honestly not certain there's a better player in our bottom-6 and we'll feel his loss when nobody down there can drive play or move the puck in transition.
I don't love the Schenn trade. Okay cool, you traded for a guy that can handle a bottom-pair role.... if he passes Liljegren on the depth chart even once I'll probably lose it. Why are we trading a 3rd for *this* much defenseman depth? We're 9 deep easy. There has to be another move.
A Sandin trade was never going to be an easy one to win, but he also would have been real unhappy after signing that deal and having to sit. He's a very good NHL defenseman, and wish him the best. Gustafsson having an insane year though and a 1st is a 1st.
Rielly-Brodie
McNabb-Holl
Giordano-Liljegren
Gustafsson-Schenn
Benn-Timmins
Lol what the f***.
We don’t have to, but, let’s move Holl and his 2mil anywaysSo with all these trades are we still cap compliant? Or do we have to move out exactly 2m?
So many think Schenn is sitting out but I think he replaces Holl and starts with Rielly
McCabe Brodie
Rielly Schenn
Giordano Lilly
That's a damn good defensive group with some snarl now with the added McCabe and Schenn
A backend of:You know Dubas is doing great when Noodles is giving him pops and said the team is as good as Bruins, TB with no visible weakness.
The only way I see Schenn actually being an improvement on Holl is if Rielly and Schenn play better together because Rielly and Holl were always a disaster. It would be a stupid idea considering Holl is a much better defenseman than Schenn.
I imagine Holl is getting moved and something else happens up front, with Schenn coming in for Holl at that point. Still stupid if it is just a straight Holl for Schenn swap, but I imagine there would be more involved in moving Holl.
This is what I have for current D pairs as well. Gustafsson as the #7. Trade Holl for whatever futures you can get.A backend of:
McCabe - Brodie
Rielly - Schenn
Giordano - Liljegren
Murray - Samsonov
Is probably one of the best overall groups.
My only concern is there’s a lot of moving parts and not that much time left until the playoffs. Hopefully they can build chemistry asap.
That's the logic I see as well. Holl needs a defensive minded partner, Schenn has shown an ability to play with Rielly type of Dmen.So many think Schenn is sitting out but I think he replaces Holl and starts with Rielly

Exactly and you know Giordano and Liljegren played really well together so overall it could be an improvement even though Schenn isn’t a clear upgrade on Holl. That's the logic I see as well. Holl needs a defensive minded partner, Schenn has shown an ability to play with Rielly type of Dmen.
For me Gio-Holl I better than Gio-Schenn, but Rielly-Schenn is a better pair than Rielly-Holl.

Found this on main boards, possibly fake but still pretty funny
I think he is insurance against an injury to Rielly. If he gets hurt we still have a PP QBGustavsson is just depth
