Would be a nice Holl replacement to have in your back pocket, figure we can probably get him at close to his current contract if he’s a good fit.

Rielly-Brodie
Sandin-Liljegren
Gio-Jensen
Timmins

Still feel like Sandin is most valuable to us as a trade chip for an upgrade on D though, I don’t know if we’re going to get 3-4 mil of value out of him when his deal needs to be re-upped.
I'd put Jensen on the top pairing with Rielly. He had a similar role with Orlov and did it pretty well. That also frees up Brodie to carry another pairing defensively

With the Blue re-tooling scooping Kapanen is a nice buy low, low risk move for them. He seems like he just needs a change of scenery. Could boost his value and use him as a trade chip next year.

I think they've being highly cautious of Murray's health down the stretch given their position in the standings, as well as Samsonov's play and Woll's strong play on the Marlies.

You can't count of Murray carrying a team through the playoffs but you see here he still gave the Pens 11 strong games (7 wins) in that run. That's nearly 2 playoff series.

That's what the Leafs are looking for IMO. Some support so Sammy doesn't have to carry the whole load.

What about Matt Murray last 3 playoff series after that time?,

2017-18 .. 12 starts 6 wins & 6 losses .. Loses 4 games to 2 in round #2 vs Washington.
2018-19 .. 4 starts 4 losses as Pens get swept by NYI in 4.
2019-20 .. 3 starts 1 win 2 losses gets pulled and replaced by Tristan Jarry for game 4 and Pens are out in play-in round to Montreal the lowest ranked team in the playoffs.

Last 3 playoffs record 12 starts 11 wins 12 losses all with Pens

How come his 3 most recent playoffs counting backwards aren't the most relevant to set expectations, but rather skipped to look beyond them for what might be possible. Murray record is 1-6 in his last 2 playoff series and out in round #1 each time.

Even if you look past the injury history and questionable availability at this time, those results can't be giving Leafs fans "optimism" based on the results.

A lot of faith in something that happened 6 years ago. IMO ... Normally when evaluating any player his last 3 seasons would be a better more accurate assessment then the 3 years prior to that.

I could be wrong but he doesn’t strike me as a good babysitter, just a guy that can play a safe 20 minutes with someone on his level defensively. You need Brodie’s odd man rush wizardry to let Rielly play his game. Orlov is a lot easier to play with than Rielly.

Armstrong is still one of the best GMs out there. A very smart waiver claim.

All about flexibility. After activating Murray and potentially sending down Benn and Anderson, they'd have just over 2M in cap space to acquire someone I believe.

It really does feel like they are preparing to acquire another player, probably a defenseman of course. Jensen fits without any sort of retention or major cap moves.

Hoping for another 1-2 moves here. Would not mind seeing Kerfoot/Engvall swapped out for players that play more of a playoff style.

Not many guys, if any, on the rental market who can do that better than Kerfoot/Engvall.

JvR, Domi, Barbashev... None of them have been any better in the playoffs, and those are the top rental forwards outside of Kane. In fact, Kerfoot has arguably had the most impactful individual playoff performance out of any of them in the last 5 or so years.

I don't think you're necessarily wrong, but it's worth trying out. Orlov is more of an offensive/transition dman and Jensen was the defensive conscience. Rielly is more of a defensive liability, but also has bigger strengths

Yes but with LTIR they don’t accrue cap space. There was no need to do it today as far as I know?

It doesn't accrue but instead of doing it last minute and risking putting off moves and all that, doing it now you can move players up and down as necessary. It's just preparation because it will likely happen anyway.

It points to the Leafs very likely making another move but it doesn't have to be imminent.

STL did well to claim Kapanen in the event this season is about selling off pending UFAs before a renewed playoff push begins for next season.

Yeah a combined 2 goals in their last ~19 playoff games is irreplaceable.

Gio and Lilly.
Or when closing out close games, have the new RD and Gio or TJ and Gio
Seems both ends of the spectrum .. Gio is the oldest active skater in the league at 39 going on 40 and Lilly has 2 NHL playoff games to his resume at age 23.

This is the Leafs best option, knowing we will be facing TB and Boston to get out of the Atlantic alone.

The plan at the beginning of the year was Rielly, Muzzin and Gio on LD, with Gio in the 3rd pairing opposite Liljegren, now it seems they're being tasked with the #1 pairing duty going up against the oppositions best.

I'm with you 100% the Leafs need a high quality top 4 Dman capable of playing 20 + minutes and preferably in all situations.

It would be pricey but I would love a McCabe+Lafferty package from Chicago. Gets a great bottom 6 guy and a top 4 defenseman. Both have 1 more year on their deals.

It would likely cost our 2024 1st+ but these guys arent rentals so I wouldnt mind that.

2024 1st, B prospect (Hirvonen?), Kerfoot for cap, another prospect and ask them nicely to take Holl?

Not if he claimed Kapanen for full salary. lol

Who cares? It's one more season and a season likely that will be a little different for them in terms of retooling. I'd easily take a gamble on a 3M Kapanen for 1 season only. He's only 26-27 years old.

Grabner went from a 9 goal season to a 27 goal season a few years ago. I bring him up because Grabner had the same naysayers, and I think Kapanen compares a lot to him.

McCabe + Lafferty would be ideal, with either Kerfoot or Engvall going back the other way.

I just dont know if we can outbid other teams unless a top prospect is involved. Idk, I guess we'll have to see what Dubas has up his sleeve

I think Gio and Lilly showed they can take on opposing top lines. Both can skate, pass and be physical.
Also, I believe if the Leafs is going to do anything in the playoffs, they need to play great D by committee like Pens did. Bc they are not going to get a Petra or Hedman.

Yeah a combined 2 goals in their last ~19 playoff games is irreplaceable.

Oh yes, but the 3 goals in 50 playoff games for Barbashev and 3 in 24 for Domi is so much better... And that is with PP time.

Or that Kerfoot had 11 points in that time frame and brings a lot more to the table than just offense. Engvall has only had 4 points, mostly in a 4th line shutdown role until last year.

JvR is the only one with any kind of legit playoff track record and he hasn't had a good playoff performance (or really a playoff performance in general) since he was in the middle of his prime.

It is maybe not irreplaceable, but it definitely seems a lot harder to replace (never mind upgrade) than anyone is willing to give them credit.

But let me guess, a guy like Jeannot is what you think is better? Him and his 0 goals in 9 playoff games with 2 measly points and a -5 despite playing in their top 6 last playoffs? Or is it Zach Hyman, who had 5 goals and 13 points in 32 games (with a -4) riding shotgun with our core players the entire time?

I’m convinced now more than ever that Korpisalo would be a great add.
