What is their definition of usage?

Because if you look at Dzone 5v5 starts. Jensen is at 15.7% vs Holl at 10%.

That number for Jensen ranks him #2 in the entire league of defensemen who've played at least 1000 minutes.

Not trying to get into a argument about who is better, just that zone starts are a super important factor of how or why a certain players numbers look a certain way.
Really have to take their GSVA with a grain of salt, it’s a working progress.

I’m not sure where the usage stat is derived from but I feel like it really undervalues offensive vs defensive zone start percentage, & doesn’t have a large enough impact in general.

Might just be as simple as quality of competition and quality of teammates from evolving hockey or another source.

Their whole offensive and defensive stat sort of counteracts it too.

That's fair and good reasoning

I'd do the deal if the caps were down to sell to Toronto (which they should as long as no better offer as we have no issues with their management group
Yep.

I also realized something. The actual combined salaries of Jensen and Sheary for this season is $3.75 million, while Kerfoot is $750k. So while the Leafs save a bit on cap space (at least $250k), the Caps save a lot on salary.

Might be able to take Robertson out of the deal and put in a slightly lesser prospect.

Oh, I get that, but IMO it's arguably more important to get Holl out of top-4 minutes than it would be to upgrade Sheary to someone 'legit'. Plus they wouldn't have to pay for any salary retention.

Jensen is legit on RD - he could babysit Sandin on the bottom pair, or take the hard matchup role. At RD with Brodie, Liljegren, and Jensen, they will never be caught in a mismatch situation like occasionally happens with Holl and Timmins.

Sheary is solid, and has the chops to play in the middle 6 with skill players.

Need a low-key good move, as the Leafs don't want to blow all asset this year if it isn't necessary.
Jensen is so good, he honestly puts our defensive core in a great spot. You can keep Brodie RD or throw him on LD. Lots of options

Rielly - Liljergen
Brodie - Jensen
Giordano - Holl

If Brodie is comfortable with LD that second pair is damn good for shutdown purposes

Can also throw Brodie on RD and ensures Sandin plays

Exactly. This is not bad at all.

Many options available, and flexibility for injuries.

Can go

Rielly - Brodie
Gio - Liljegren/Jensen
Sandin - Jensen/Liljegren

If any LD is injured (or Sandin underperforms) , then Brodie moves to the left and Holl draws in. If a RD gets injured, then Holl replaces them.

But at least both of Holl and Sandin are not required to be in the lineup nightly, even though I think that they are each fine individually on the bottom pair.

Dubas is likely to be trading for a dman, but if he were to go after another forward, I sure would LOVE to see him give the Caps a call. Tom Wilson sure would look sweet as our 3RW.

Knies ROR Wilson

Yikes!!!

I don't think the Caps are full on rebuilding, they likely accept this year is not theirs and will re-tool in the summer. They have like 10 UFAs so there will be lots of cap space to surround Ovechkin with the best roster possible

Until Ovechkin reaches 895, they will keep trying to be competitive, and I expect Wilson to be part of that

And that is why he needs to be traded.

If he was our #5/6 we wouldn’t be having the issues we have now.

I’d have less of a problem with Holl if Keefe would stop trying to make Rielly-Holl work when it so clearly doesn’t. The personnel is there even with Sandin injured to avoid that pairing but for whatever reason Keefe thinks our least capable defenseman defensively and our defenseman most prone to major f*** ups is a good duo to trot out there.

Rielly-Liljegren
Gio-Holl
Brodie-Timmins

You wouldn't have Knies anymore if Washington somehow decided they wanted to trade Wilson to us - he would be the price and then some. I'm also really hesitant to trade for him considering his injury history recently. He's also -9 in his last 5 GP since returning....

my personal bets are

1.) Holl for soucy
2.) mayyybe dumba?

I personally wanted Orlov.

I would absolutely trade for ekholm but probably unlikely

Hmmm… I don’t think it would cost us Knies. I wouldn’t do it if it did, but Wilson at 50% retained, would be worth going after imo. Probably still a pipe dream though. Grrrr….

I like Jensen as a target. Not really into Sheary though. Pens have always been my #2 team, and I just never liked him as a player very much. I don’t think he’s better than Kerfoot.

Jensen’s obviously better than Gudas & would be great for matchups or a partner for Rielly, but I do feel Gudas is the better fit for the Leafs.

He’s what they’re missing: a mean, physical and extremely dirty defenseman who protects the crease well & can actually play.

I’d pick Jensen over Gudas, but if there’s only one last add for this team this season, I’d take Gudas.

I highlighted that paragraph for the reason the author provided.

Minny the 3rd team involved in the trade to facilitate 2 others received a 4th and 5th round draft pick for retaining $74k and $86K in real money ie, "All in all, more smart use of cap space".

I posted it because people keep asking .. "Why would Minny do this ?"
Isn't the real money aspect of this completely irrelevant when the two teams in question are Toronto and Boston? This isn't Arizona and Ottawa trading for real money purposes.. They traded for cap and cap alone.

Agreed - re: Sheary.

2 things, however. He has shown the ability in the past to play with high skill players, and the difference in cap hits between Sheary and Kerfoot is basically equal to Jensen. He doesn't have to be better than Kerfoot, only a better fit.

Plus the Caps get $3.75 million salary out, $750k in. The Leafs save at mimimum $250k in cap space.

Muzzin was a beast in the playoffs last year, and the Leafs still haven't replaced him. I don't think anyone should be excited to go from Muzzin-Rielly-Giordano to Rielly-Giordano-Sandin on the left. Jensen may not be a LHD himself, but he is probably the best D available for a reasonable cost and would allow Brodie to move over. He leads Washington in QoC and drives play in those tough minutes, even on a pretty shaky team

Wow Kapanen is going to be waivers shortly.

Leafs did great to sell high on his value.

Leafs could claim him and help make moving Kerfoot a bit easier. Kap's speed and PK ability would still be useful in the bottom 6.
Interesting buy low candidate if you can get a team to retain half for next year
