I like Sandin and think he's a future top-4 guy, but if we're going for it, I'm ok with moving him for a McDonough or Ekholm.

Meh.

Good add for Boston and he’ll fit into their team like a glove because everyone does, but Orlov hasn’t ever really done anything for me. As a prospect he was to be Mike Green’s successor, and he does put up alright numbers, but call him what he is - a great 4D or a good #3 who can handle big minutes but only in short spurts.

Hathaway is a throw in who already gets away with murder so he’ll get a small bump in Boston on that front.

ROR fills a greater need.

Tampa are still the guys to beat, not because what Boston is doing isn’t incredible but Swayman/Ullmark vs Vasilevskiy - that’s the X factor right there.

Mike Green's successor was John Carlson. Orlov is exactly what you describe him as, with a touch of the rugged stuff.

I wouldn’t worry about Bruins’ trades with Tampa being our first round opponent. Jeez, beat them first and then worry about Orlov and the rest.
Exactly. Leafs have never got past the first round with this group. Beat Tampa and move on to next round. Who knows the Bruins may not even win the first round (although I wouldn’t bet on it).

Really, I think Murphy is the guy you want, if that's what you think needs replacing in the lineup. His contract isn't unreasonable either. Add Murphy and Kane, to what we already have, and you have one heck of a team.

Calgary apparently is willing to move Weegar, who I think might be a nice add as well, but his contract at $6.25 mil is too rich I think. He got paid based on having been the offensive guy in Florida, benefiting from a one season outlier. He's a good D, but I think he's more of a $4.5 - $5 mil guy long term.
Sounds exactly like Morgan Reilly.

Sandin is leafs #6 d
A top 4 LHD. At least that's what everything aside from TOI says he is. If you want to upgrade this D the only thing you could do is bring in a good RHD to bump Holl out of the line-up or a true two way #1 LHD to bump Mo down to the second pairing.

Sandin is leafs #6 and the guy who played the weaker matchup amount all leafs regular d...hes not producing enough offensivly to be consider right now a top 4 offensive dman and his defensive game is too weak for that too

Im not sure of what we see from sandin now will be different in 2-3 year.... people take for granted than because sandin is 22( soon 23) than he will necessairly grow up and being better but its not always the case and i dont see a huge improvement contrairly to liljegren in his game.

And like stephen said, if leafs can get a real top 4 d who will bring whats leafs need, good bye sandin...

What are the scouts going to say.
EK is a really good player(not Dman).

How do we know the Oilers aren't stocking up on more ex-Leafs? James Reimer, Scott Harrington and Alexander Barabanov could look really nice alongside Hyman, Campbell, Barrie, Ceci...

I don't see too many people who wish the Leafs had gotten Orlov and Hathaway for that package instead of O'Reilly and Acciari.
No but many people are like omg did we do enough.
We did imo.

I think we could do more and we should.... But this team should be enough for a long playoff run.

The trade deadline has not passed and the Leafs have the option to do more. So it’s perfectly valid to discuss what direction they could be going and is it related to today’s Boston move.

Yeah I mean look what we got

A couple of forwards, ones a perennial selke candidate and both of them are gritty as hell but it's obvious we don't value defensive play like our competitors do

Never change Mess, never change
Yup I'm on board with the Leafs move and always been a big fan or O'Reilly and he was also #1 on my wish list.

But surely you understand my point that Boston added to their dcore to improve it with a top 4 player in an attempt to strengthen their defense ..

"Good teams are built from the goalie out, through strong defense and strength down the middle"

You can't compare a forward O'Reilly to a Dman Orlov .. If Leafs had added a Dman like Orlov they would have pushed all other dman down.. Leafs trade doesn't improve their dcore.

You need to compare Boston's Dcore to Toronto's defense core to see the point I was making. Essentianally Orlov #4 vs J. Holl #4 on Leafs. So this move to me suggest Leafs need to add a top 4 Dman not only to get better but address the competition already better just widening the gap.

Boston has surrendered the lowest goals against in the league 118 GA and added a Dman to improve on their strength even more and they were already +38 GA better.

This move was made to counteract the Leafs adding a top 6 forward adding offense by adding a top 4 Dman to put a strain on Leafs offense. Boston will be even harder to score against now.

Yeah I don’t subscribe to the thinking that the Leafs D is good enough when a much better defensive team needed to shore up.

Some teams go into the playoffs making sure their D is overstocked and a strength on strength for a long run. Not that it surprisingly held up in the regular season, so screw it. What would be the baseball equivalent? “We have too many leftie middle relief pitchers and closers.”

Some teams go into the trade deadline trying to improve on their weaknesses to address them and Boston just took their #1 strength "defense" and improved it further.

Boston is already #1 in the league in the standings and in GA (118) and both their goalies are top 10 in GAA and SV% with Ullmark #1OA in both with 1.88 GAA and .937 sv%.

Who would look at that and say lets add a Stanley Cup experienced Top 4 Dman to strengthen it further, capable of playing +22 minutes a night?

Our Leafs addressed a need for a top 6 forward in ROR and help in the middle, and depth at forward position, but I subscribe to the theory you're only as strong as your weakest link and against Boston and others like TB that is Leafs defense and uncertain goaltending.

If I were in Dubas shoes I would be burning up the phone lines trying to find a top 4 Dman to replace Jake Muzzin in style and ability (now confirmed done for the year) .. Looks like Orlov just did that for Bruins.

The bruins also lead the league in goals for, so does adding a forward strength their #1 strength as well?

The Flames/Knights game had 90 combined hits tonight lmaooo. 50 by calgary. 40 by Vegas.

Good god. Playoff hockey is around the corner

When we added ROR and Acciai, those two players not just improve our team but also changed our lineup.
Bruins adding Hathaway and Orlov just strengthen them, it didn't improve them a whole lot.
Put it in Baseball terms since Jays is having Spring Training.
ROR and Acciari is like adding No. 2 and No.5 starter to the rotation, while Hathaway and Orlov are like adding two more bats to the line up.
I think the leafs have the potential to go from a good team to a great team while the Bruins can only go from a great team to even greater team. The ability to improve gets harder as you go up the latter. So the Leafs have improved more for sure imo.

But getting Orlov for me is like getting a back end closer or elite 8th inning type like a Devin Williams on the high end or Raisel Igelasias type. They just become that much better at defending a lead and really just even more stable. And getting Hathaway (a player with good intaglibles) is like getting a great lefty masher.

Ekholm would be one guy I wouldn't say no to including Sandin
I would give this like a 1 % chance of happening as I don't think we have the assets to get it done but Ekholm + Schenn would be a dream scenario. Or even just Ekholm.

Ekholm-Liljegren
Rielly-Schenn
Giordano-Brodie

A more realistic scenario is giving up a top prospect and a good pick for Jensen who may be in play if the caps are re-tooling/re-building.

Rielly-Jensen
Gio-Liljegren
Brodie-Holl
