Trades and Free Agency - 2022/2023 Trade Deadline Edition

The major issue I see is that the team would have to decide between re-signing ROR and Orlov.....there is only enough cap next season for one - especially if they are thinking of bringing Bunting back. Either way, I doubt the Leafs could fit Orlov and ROR next season.

IMO I think ROR is far more important to the Leafs than Orlov.

If we go cheaper on a Murray replacement, O’Rielly and Bunting make a combined ~9 mil, and Orlov eats Muzzin’s LTIR + Sandin’s 1.5 I think it’s doable.

Leafs need to complete the forward group otherwise the ORielly trade is futile. Tampa + Boston will have the advantage if nothing else is done.

Bunting Matthews Nylander
Tavares O'Reilly Marner
Domi Lafferty Jarnkrok
Knies Acciardi Kampf

---------------------------------------

Lafferty 1,150,000
Domi 3,000,000
$4,150,000

Kerfoot 3,500,000
Engvall 2,250,000
Picks + prospects
$5,750,000
Domi is not a great player. Bertuzzi would be a better gamble.

Adding Domi and Lafferty is the difference? lol come on.

While I think the Leafs are definitely still interested in Chychrun and talking to Arizona, one has to think that since we've already gave up our 1st this year, any deal for Chychrun will either include a 1st in 2024 or Matthew Knies now.
Sandin plus Knies plus b prospect.
I would do it if the cap can work.

They would have to make some hard decisions for 2024/25. The Leafs need to give raises to Matthews, Nylander, and Liljegren with about $4-$5 million extra - give or take. That won't work.

I peg Samsonov for $5 million x 5, and Woll at his current salary.

As far as I can tell, you can still only enter the US unvaccinated if you are a US citizen on a US work visa. So Bertuzzi can currently go back and forth because he is playing for a US team and thus has a work visa. I think if he is traded to Canada, he loses the US work visa and be unable to re-enter the US unvaccinated. But I am not 100% sure on this.

You are correct on this I believe.

Domi and Lafferty or insert actual bottom six players who actually hit would be the difference. It amazes me how comfortable fans are with Kerfoot and Engvall heading into the playoffs again. They'll be the same fans screeching about how thin our bottom six is after game one.

LW offense is debatable but there's cap room to address it if need be.

I have an absolute mutant on the back end too for some nasty games lol. I wanted to get more of an every day player but 1-6 seems hard to displace.

I'm not giving up both Sandin and Knies, it's one or the other.

Sandin
Robertson
Kerfoot
2nd

Or

Knies
Niemela
Kerfoot
2nd
You might need to go to the 2024 1st or add another lower prospect (or maybe both in the case of Robetson because of his injury histy) just ot beat offers from other teams..

But to be honest, I'm not terribly familiar with Chychrun. Can someone give a good run on how the Leafs defense would change with Chychrun in place of Sandin?

We just added 1-2 new players to the bottom 6 (I expect ROR to be 3C eventually).

I think after the jack debacle other GM's will be wary of handing those contracts to lead goalies knowing that a portion of the goalie's success is largely due to our team. I think Sammy would be less.

If you were to do a deal for those two, I think it would have to look a little bit different. Domi might be the exact type of player we want/need, but I am not at all sure he is rbs specific one we want. I worry about team chemistry, media side show and bad penalities with a Domi here again.

However, I think you need to give up a bit more to get those two and you need Chicago to eat on them.

Robertson
Kerfoot (they can flip him for a pick or two).
A mid pick
and a B prospect like (SDA or Abrusezze).

Bunting Matthews Nylander
Domi Tavares Marner
Lafferty O'Rielly Acciari
Jarnrkok Kampf Engvall
Knies

I like this lineup if Domi weren't Domi
Insert anyone you want so long as its not Kerfoot, Engvall or Reese.
Lafferty, Nico Sturm, Scott Laughton, etc. Makes no difference to me.

I find it hard to believe Samsonov is getting 5x5, unless he has a really good playoffs of course.

He has been a tandem starter one year after getting non-tendered.

If he is getting 5 years, I would expect him in the low 4's.

The team added two NHL forwards without subtracting an NHL forward. I don't think they'll make another move to acquire a forward or trade a forward unless it's an exchange of UFA for NHL player under control in 2023-24 (and it makes sense for the current team). The team now has valuable forward depth. If Kerfoot, Kampf and Engvall have lesser roles for the balance of the season, that's good because they're capable of taking on a larger role when injuries strike. The trade deadline for the playoff bound is about adding veteran depth so you don't have to rely on uncertainties.

The team seems to have enough defensemen as well. Only a move to acquire some significant defender with multiple years of control would make sense. Perhaps another another goalie to slip into the depth chart behind Woll.
