Speaking of Moulson, whether or not we bring him in via trade... does anyone know if Moulson moved his family out to Buffalo with him? If not, could that give us a kind of inside track on him in July, since his family is already in this area?

What are we thinking he's going to get on the open market? Don't want to sign him for more than 5 years, but beyond that, I'm not sure.

Not sure, though Im not interested in the least.

We dont have a Tavares for him to play with

His family is still in LI. He won't move them until he signs long-term, this off-season, I'm assuming.

At least the schedule did Matt Moulson a favor. It brought him to Madison Square Garden for a game Thursday night against the Rangers, which meant he could go back to his Long Island home Wednesday. Seeing his family, including the son who will be three weeks old Friday, he said, "Made me miss them a little less."

The market for wingers is pretty strong this year. Vanek, Moulson, Cammalleri, Gaborik and Callahan. All of these players could be had. Makes it less likely to get a high-end package for a rental. Again, I don't think you'd do much better than Stewart and Edmonton's 2nd round pick. A scoring forward with upside who is under contract for next year and a 2nd round pick that could grab you a good prospect or be used to move up in the draft.

That's essentially an enigmatic, but talented winger under contract plus the last pick of the first round. That sounds about right, although I'd still like to target Boston's proposed deal for Iginla as the comp given that, despite the UFA market this summer, Cally is unique on the rental market today.

Would also definitely prefer to get a young center rather than a winger, if it at possible, but that may not be doable.

It is. You can also add Vrbata to that group.

There is a second tier, too. Heatley, Whitney, Michalek, Setoguchi, Kulemin, Hemsky, Downie, Stempniak, Boyes. Some are in playoff contention, others are not. Hell, would anyone be surprised to see Jagr traded again?

If Callahan gets dealt, I imagine he'd fetch a king's ransom. He'd be a great fit in STL I think, maybe they part with one of their young forwards like Tarasenko or Schwartz plus a pick?

I honestly think you guys will re-sign him though. He's too good to not pony up the dough.

If we could get one of those I'd be ecstatic. Never going to happen, though.

Vrbata. Do want.

Rangers and Callahan are too far apart and the Rangers stance is they'll trade him rather than lose him without anything coming back when free agency season opens at the conclusion of the hockey season. Callahan's agent can negotiate a deal with another team but that doesn't mean he'll sign right away. Just doing nothing they have leverage. I don't think that Stewart and a 2nd coming back is really a bad deal for the Rangers but maybe someone will offer something better. I think most of us here anyway are resigned to the idea that Callahan is going to move though.

Really? Am I overvaluing Callahan that much?

Wow. I guess the Lundqvist deal really took up a ton of cap space, huh?

There is no way that happens, even if Cally was signed for 5 years. I would throw a party if it did though.

I would be intrigued by this. For this season, Gabby gets inserted with his old line mates in AV's system. We'd lose a PKer, and some grit. For next season, I hope Gabby would want be in NY sans Torts and would come considerably cheaper. Given the rest of the current roster, maybe we need a Cally type player more than a Gabby, but who knows what the turnover will be?

I've been advocating for this for about 2 weeks now

Callahan is soon to be 29 and has had a number of injuries over the years. He's also a pending UFA. Tarasenko is 22 and has 18 goals in 52 games. Trading Tarasenko for Callahan, as much as I would love it, won't get St. Louis any closer to winning a cup.

No. Cap space isn't an issue. The cap will go up quite a bit and Richards will be bought out. Hank's new contract is only 1.625 mil more than he current contract. The issue is that we don't want to pay Callahan 6 mil per year for 7 years, which is what he wants. We would be willing to go 5 years, but don't expect him to be productive for 7 years given the injuries he has had and the way he plays the game.

Those players are hard to come by. I think an extended Callahan could get you a player like that, but not as a rental.

Stewart is a better player than he's given credit for around here. He simply doesn't fit in with Hitchcock's system. Yet despite that, he's been a pretty steady goal scorer while with the Blues. He's an upgrade on Pouliot at the very least, the question is whether or not he can establish chemistry with Brassard and Zuccarello.

Yep, there is certainly a long list of names out there. It would probably behoove the Rangers to get out ahead of the pack and make a deal before teams can really get a feel for what guys like Moulson and Vanek will go for.

And it's still a bad idea. We aren't trading for Gabby. He isn't the player he once was and who knows how he'll be when he comes back from injury.

If we are trading Callahan, it won't be for someone who is both older and more injury prone than him.

What about Callahan for Vanek and a pick?

In what world does Callahan have more value than Vanek? In what world do we make significant trades with the islanders? Do you really want to see Callahan play for the piles?

at this point I don't really care who he plays for, I just want the guy off the team. His heart is clearly not here, regardless of his media ploys. If his heart was here, and he gave a **** about this team, he'd be asking for NO MORE than Dustin Brown $$$.

We're not paying him, and now other teams see him as a rental (more and more every day as well). Trade the guy now...

As for his value, the Isles aren't making the playoffs. Do they see Callahan as a piece of the future? Does Vanek fit into future of NYR? If yes on both, why not?
