If Callahan ever got to free agency, he would end up in Philadelphia.

Would be a typical Holmgren move. Even at projected cap levels (I'm banking on 69-70 with the Canadian dollar sliding), this would put them in cap hell further than they already are.

I still think Tallon throws the big $ his way.

Thoughts on Gaborik for Callahan? Gabby has been injured but its known what he's capable of. He would also be a rental and then both teams would be liable for trying to get their player signed. I imagine Columbus would want more but Horton and Cally sem like leaders that you can build a team around.

I would be intrigued by this. For this season, Gabby gets inserted with his old line mates in AV's system. We'd lose a PKer, and some grit. For next season, I hope Gabby would want be in NY sans Torts and would come considerably cheaper. Given the rest of the current roster, maybe we need a Cally type player more than a Gabby, but who knows what the turnover will be?

For what it's worth, Iginla went for a late 1st and two unremarkable NCAA prospects. At that stage in his career, Iginla was a 2nd/3rd line tweener with leadership skills coming out the ears.

I still don't know why everyone is thinking the trade is going to be Stewart for Callahan. To me, it's clearly the Rangers looking for a replacement if Callahan was to be traded.

They aren't necessarily comparable players, but he'd fit a scoring role on the third line.

And why is that a bad deal for an expiring contract?

It's not a bad return; I think it's what teams have been paying for rentals of Callahan's class. You need to get whatever you can for Callahan if you can't sign him, the return - two fuzzy asetts - is just not going to do much to distract me from the annoyance of trading Ryan Callahan.

If Richards is getting bought out I don't see how we can afford to let Brass go.

Unless we get Stastny or another second line C. Then Stepan and that guy will be the first two line Cs, with Lindberg and Dom Moore (I'm hoping we re-sign him) as the third and fourth line guys. But there really will be no quality UFA C aside from Stastny. I mean maybe Derek Roy, but I've always seen him as a third liner.

Why would Callahan agree to an extension with another team unless they gave him what he wanted?

There was no apparent change on Sunday in the Ryan Callahan dynamic as it applies to either his camp’s negotiations with the Rangers or management’s negotiations with potential trade partners.

Time is more an ally of the captain than of general manager Glen Sather. As a pending free agent, Callahan won’t be able to speak to all of the other 29 teams until June 25, so though he would likely prefer to take care of his business now, there is no urgency whatsoever for him to operate in a restricted market.

Beyond that, though Buffalo is believed willing to meet Callahan’s asking price of a seven-year deal worth at least $42 million that would probably come with the club captaincy — think of it as the reverse Chris Drury — the 30th-overall Sabres are not involved in the current trade talks.

Why would they be, when there is no reason to surrender assets now when they can simply sign the winger free (alternate meaning) and clear when the market opens?

Callahan can speak with all of the teams in July.

Its the Rangers who want closure by the end of this week. The other camp will wait until the summer.

Sather will have to trade him as a rental.

Sather was in the same spot in 2011. He wanted to trade for Richards but Dallas wanted too much. Sather got him as a free agent and kept his assets. Richards had a no trade/no move so he controlled the situation while Callahan doesn't but Sather didn't want to meet Nieuwendyk's asking price.

The Super Bowl is over.

Would rather have brass at 4 years 4 million per than Stastny at something like 7.5 for 7 years. I really don't see the appeal of Stastny.

Stastny has a pain in the ass agent. Matt Keator. Kreider is one of his clients. Chara,Higgins and Wheeler are some of his other clients.

The Rangers will return to practice today. They have a game tomorrow against the Avs. Optional in the morning. Practice on Wednesday. Game on Thursday against Edmonton. Optional in the morning. Fly to Pittsburgh after the game. Pittsburgh on Friday. The Olympic freeze begins Friday at 3PM. When do the Rangers make the Callahan trade? They only have 12 healthy forwards on the roster. If the trade is made on Friday, they will need another forward. They can't expect a player acquired in a Friday trade to play on Friday. I know it happened with the Columbus players last April. They could have a player from the AHL fly to Pittsburgh. The Pack will be in Norfolk,Virginia on Friday.

Now it sounds like the rangers are going to get a crap return for Callahan...Iginla and Clowe reap the returns they did last year and we're having trouble finding a good return for callahan.

So, it's a back-and-forth in the press between the two camps.

Slats: "We will grant permission for teams to talk to Callahan's agent." Translation: we're not giving you a seven year deal, and definitely not at those numbers. Go talk to other teams and see if they'll give it to you. You'll see that they won't. And if they will, great, we'll trade you there and you can sign it right away, which is a win/win for both of us - you lock in security at a place you want to play and we get a better return.

Bartlett: "Time is on our side and we believe we can get our terms from Buffalo." Translation: it doesn't matter what teams willing to make a deal right now will do; we will get our terms in a full auction on the open market. We especially believe this to be true, because we think Buffalo will want to bring back the local boy to Captain all the kids - and they have no motivation to give up any assets in order to do that when they can bide their time and get him for free over the summer.

Okay, we've danced the dance. Now trade him as a rental and get the best package you can. Maybe you expand the deal to include say, a Kristo, in order to get more in return. And I would try to engage Buffalo regardless. They're taking a very calculated risk. What happens if Cally gets traded to TB - and they win the cup (with Stamkos back)? And he/his wife realizes he/she likes the warm weather? And they are willing to match Buffalo's deal, with the added benefit of no state taxes in FL? It's at least worth exploring.

One thing's for certain: whether it's full value or rental value, you need to trade him.

Given Cally's age and "intangibles" reputation, I would argue that you can do at least as well as a 35 year old Iginla, and certainly better than a dramatically underperforming/obviously broken Clowe. Would it be as good as a signed Cally? Of course not. But it's still not peanuts. And, as I mentioned above, you can also expand the deal on our side to increase the return.

Regardless, you can't lose him for nothing. What did Iginla fetch? A first and two 2nd tier prospects? (And didn't a lot of people think Boston's offer was better?) That's still better than letting him walk for nothing in the offseason.

That would a heinous trade.

Yeah, I'm not quite sure what the purpose of bringing back any pending UFA for Callahan is. You move Callahan if you have the opportunity to add assets that will help the team long term. As much as I hate the idea of losing Callahan for nil at season's end, the Rangers are better served keeping Callahan than trading him for another UFA.

Boston had Bartowski, Khoklachev and a #1 on the table for Iginla. Iginla wanted the Pens, so Feaster had to take the lesser deal.

The only deal of that sort I might like is Callahan, extended, for Moulson, extended. Or something like that.

As much as I loved Gaborik when he was here... I want no part of him. Part of the problem we had with him last year was that he was an RW and didn't do well on the left... we don't need a top-6 RW. It'd be the same situation.

Lol @ Cally for Gaborik. I don't even...

If the trade doesn't get done tonight, will they scratch him tomorrow? Who will play instead? Dorsett probably won't play until after the Olympics, maybe the end of the week. (If he was ready and they had limited options. AV optimally wants him to rest over the break.)

In my mind Sather wants a deal done by Wednesday night before the back to back, should there be a trade out there to be made.

Should be an interesting week.

to be honest, rather than doing good prospect/youngish 3rd liner + 1st for Callahan, I'd rather have good prospect/youngish 3rd liner + couple of mid rounders or something like that. A Clowe kind of return, talking strictly about picks. Realistically, that first is going to be late anyhow. Take 2 or 3 midrounders instead of that, perhaps a team like STL overvalues their 1st.
