The heart of the team got 7 years and $59.5M in December. That guy stirs the Rangers drink.

The Rangers are insane if they are willing to give Callahan $6M per or more for five years.

Gotta agree here. Too much term and money. He won't get both.

A trade involving Callahan to Phoenix with Henrik Samuelsson as a part of the return makes almost too much sense.

As a CBJ fan coming in peace and enjoying the discussion you're having I'll say this:

I don't think the CBJ are looking to make a play for Callahan (although he's a great player)

I think they want the other UFA. Dan Girardi. No real evidence to back it up. Just a hunch.

I do think the Rangers scouts were in Columbus to see the CBJ though and not the Panthers. Don't really see any veterans on FLA really worth much to NYR.

Why the hell would we be interested in veterans for Cally?? We'd be looking at their young talent, Barkov, Bjugstad, etc...

If I were in Cally's shoes, I would have asked for 8 years and 7.5M per. My job is to look out for my family. Call me selfish, but I bet you every one here pontificating would do the same thing.
Rangers don't have to give it to him, but anybody calling for Cally to accept what is fair are just posturing.
I do think that 5 years at 6 M per is a good offer from the Rangers, but i don't blame him for asking for more.

Neither do I, all the power to him. However, I root for the Rangers, not Ryan Callahan. I appreciate him for all that he's done, but it comes to a point where it becomes a business decision. The money can be better invested. If he doesn't budge on his demands, trade him.

Edit: Tallon should be fired on the spot if he trades youth for vets. Just because he has an open check book doesn't mean he will trade youth away to take on bigger contracts. He'll hurl the kitchen sink at whatever the best UFA's end up being.

While I agree that you never want to leave money on the table and you do need to look out for yourself and your family first, $$ is not the only thing to consider when making decisions about setting you and your family up. Job satisfaction, location, schools, jobs for partners etc etc are all a factor. It's certainly not in the $m like Cally, but I have and continue to leave $$ on the table because I love my job and what it offers me aside from $$, many other people do to.

I'm not saying that the Rangers can offer any of that (or all I know Cally hates NY), but decision like this are generally more than just about money.

Yeah, we agree, but all these people blaming Cally for wanting the best for his family are in la la land.
I say the deal on the table is good enough, or trade him, but let's not vilify him if he wants more. This is the free market economy, if he gets a better deal for himself, be happy for him.

Slight disagreement, when I am dealing with my corporate bosses, $$ is the thing that makes the difference.

Nobody is asking him not to get whatever he can. But the reality is a lot of people who make a LOT less money don't always take the job that pays the most.

No offense, but they should. not my job to worry about the cap space, it's management.

I have a feeling people around here will be disappointed with the return on a Callahan trade should it go down.

As a rental? Yes, people will be disappointed. As a sign and trade, he'll bring something very nice back.

Didn't a report come out that only one team even reached out to his agent? Seems like most GMs thinks he's out to lunch with his contract demands. Even then they could just take the chance and wait until July 1st to sign him and not give up any assets.

McIlrath has been scratched the last 2 games with an upper body injury.

Let the conspiracy theories begin.

That's correct. A team would be better served to see what the demands will be for July 1st, but the advantage of acquiring him now and extending him will be having him for a cup run this playoffs. The West is an absolute war. A team like LA, Phoenix, Anaheim, SJ, or Vancouver would overpay to get a guy like Callahan in the fold for a run this year and get a leg up on the teams around them.

Signed Callahan and McIlrath for Yandle and Samuelsson.

Can we stop acting like Graves was a HHOFer? He had a career .53 PPG and had one anomalous 50g season. His career was overrated based upon one ridiculously good season. Callahan in reference has a career .56 PPG playing without a generational centerman in a lower scoring era on worse Rangers teams. I certainly don't think it's disrespectful to compare Callahan and Graves, they're pretty similar players. I know Callahan sucks now because he's rumored to be leaving, but geez.

this is interesting...didnt realize how close they were. still, i would give gravy the edge in terms of impact. that said, your points show that callahan, were he to stay, has every opportunity to be as important to the rangers as graves has been.

Girardi wants $5.5M per for 6. The Rangers have offered $5.2M per for 6

So basically the deal is done. If they agree on the term and they are within $300k on the dollars, the deal will get done as soon as they get to talking next time. The difference is so small that splitting the difference makes all the sense in the world: $32 over 6 years.

Would be all over that
Girardi for 5 years at 5,35 M is Ok too
But all the cap space Sather would retain after the buyout of Richards would be scary (assuming UFAs of some value ie Stralman and Boyle then also are dealt) as he would most likely go bananas again

Stewart is not a bad start . If they can get a real good young prospect with him sadly i can see it happening

A rw w Nash, Stewart, zuccarello, Dorsett is not bad at all. Just hurts team defence w Cally gone. It would hurt regardless of who comes back

The Rangers have so many contract issues to deal with between today and the summer.

Now the theory is Sather gave one team permission with speak with Bartlett and told him 7 years is too much. That will really dissuade Bartlett from rejecting the Rangers overtures. Bartlett took Erik Cole out of Carolina and put him in Montreal for 4 years/$18M. Cole was comfortable in Carolina. He followed the advice of his agent. Callahan will get 7 years in July.

The Rangers operate so slow under Sather. Its always been that way.

I can't wait to lose every UFA we have sans Girardi and Callahan for nothing this summer.

Can't help but feel like that's where this season is headed.
