However, if Callahan wants what he wants (7x6M) and a team will give that to him, tomorrow in a trade, he HAS to make that move, no? What if he gets a career threatening injury? Gets a concussion? Knee surgery? If he can get the deal that he wants, there's no reason to "wait til free agency". It would be foolishly risky to do so.

It's also presumed that the teams his agent are talking to are teams he might want to play for. Bidding wars in July don't necessarily mean it's a team he wants to be on.

How about if every team tells him he's nucking futs for asking for what he's asking and he decides the Rangers offer is better than he thought?

good points.....i thought of those just as i finished my post, but i do agree with you on most of those points.

Not likely. He's as beloved to Columbus as Cally was to us a year and a half ago.

I hear ya, but his contract is actually longer than Stewart's and it's very similar cap hit wise so maybe it's wishing on my part but dumping Oshie saves them more money.

What happens if the deal(s) fall apart? And Callahan will probably demand some kind of no-trade/no-movement clause in his next contract--Rangers would not be able to provide that and still trade him.

Also, I don't think you understand that when another team is allowed to talk to a player like Callahan about a long term contract--there will already be an agreement in place when he's traded. Signing an extension would become part of the deal the Rangers made--if Callahan suddenly decides not honor the agreement he (and his agent) worked out, the trade would be voided.

true true, i should have included in my post that sather would not give him a NMC.......that way he could just move him. At that point though, i could see callahan not agreeing to not having a NMC clause anyhow.

I guess the fact that Cally and his agent have the option to talk to other clubs is probably the only way to go at this point.

It would be incredibly stupid to trade Callahan to the Blue Jackets, and reunite him with several ex-Rangers, when the Rangers are battling with them for the playoffs. Its one of those "just asking for it" moves

Shouldnt the Jackets be saying the same thing about sending more of their players to the Rangers?

Stop coaching Pat talked to the agent.

Only one of the NHL teams that reportedly had received the Rangers’ permission to discuss contract extension details with Callahan’s agent had phoned Steve Bartlett as of early Saturday evening, the Daily News has learned, and no hard deadline exists in Bartlett’s mind for Blueshirts GM Glen Sather either to strike a deal or trade the pending unrestricted free agent.

“My focus is to continue to talk to the Rangers and deal with the Rangers,” Bartlett said by phone on Saturday, adding that he is “optimistic” and that Callahan will make any final decision. “We won’t close any doors.

“I respect that they have to make the best decision for the team, and I know they respect I have to make the best decision for my player.”

The team that contacted Bartlett is unknown, but it was not the Columbus Blue Jackets, a team that ESPN had reported on Friday was showing interest.

If more people watched the Wolf Pack, fewer would want to give a massive contract to Callahan. I've been trying to figure out what's wrong with Jesper Fast and I'm having a hard time with this one. The kid looks ready, both offensively and defensively.

Fast is going to be a 20+ goal scorer. He has great speed, accurate/hard shot, superior intelligence and his size is also very decent. All he needs is a chance to play on the top-9. He is ready. He doesn't make rookie mistakes anymore. He knows what to do. Save the $5.2 extra we'd pay Callahan and put Fast there. The difference between $6 and $0.8 should be given to someone else to fill a real hole.

If Callahan ended up signing for something like 6x$5.5 would people be mad?

Yes. I'm going to miss Ryan Callahan if he leaves. Guy laid his heart out for this team the past 7 years and symbolized what it meant to play like a Ranger. That being said, term is an even greater concern for me than dollars. Unfortunately, it's time to move on.

Not a big fan of Atkinson being the main piece.

Curious to hear why you feel that way. I have my concerns as well, especially about how his frame will hold up. Add in the fact that he's a tenacious little ******* and durability is definitely a concern.

It wouldn't be the greatest return, but in his young NHL career, he's proven that he can put the puck in the net. He slots in well as a young, cost-controlled right winger. I imagine they would get another piece in addition to him if that happens.

Atkinson is basically another Zuccarello before he broke out point totals wise this year. I'd make that swap in a heartbeat.

I love Atkinson. But I really don't think you can get away with him and MZA in the too six, potentially and probably on the same line.

All eyes are on the Rangers. Forwards Ryan Callahan, Brian Boyle, Benoit Pouliot along with defencemen Dan Girardi and Anton Stralman all become UFA’s on July 1. The troubles don’t stop there, winger Derrick Brassard is in the last year of a contract he signed while with Columbus. He’s a restricted free agent and will come up a winner at arbitration if he can’t get a deal done. All this makes the buyout of Brad Richards pretty much inevitable and it also means other players will be packing their bags. The talk is Callahan wants a seven-year deal worth $6.85 million per-season (that’s exactly what Patrice Bergeron got with Boston) and it’s doubtful the Rangers will pony up. The Blues, Wings and Kings all need help up front. Girardi could be a headache as well because he wants $6 million per-season on a long-term deal.

How much does Callahan want? Does he really want nearly $48M?

Bergeron got $6.5M per for 8 years.

Bergeron. Pavelski. Those players are better than Callahan.

Cally's teammate and coach have some really nice things to say about him.

“I’m not saying I can call the shots,” Stepan told the Daily News. “I’m biased obviously, but considering what he means to this team, what he’s taught me and what he’s meant to my pro career, it would be very tough to see him go. ... The business side of this sport is difficult. I went through it this year. It doesn’t say anything about the organization or the player. It’s just the nature of it … That’s the hardest part. It’s not personal.”

“I think in Ryan’s case, he’s been a real professional throughout all this, and he’s kept that part of his life away from his teammates and away from the dressing room,” Vigneault said Saturday. “I think he understands that you have questions and he, in a professional manner, answers those questions, but at the end of the day his job is to come here, get ready, help his teammates get ready, and go out and perform. And he’s done that remarkably since Day 1, so that part hasn’t changed.”

Maybe it's just me, but this has me cautiously optmistic that a deal will get done.

That avatar = superior. Can't mess with Vivi.

Id have a hard time wanting Atkinson being the main piece if he is that small.

Black Mages, GOAT.

My problem with Atkinson is this, Jesper Fasth is 2" taller, he could add muscle to his frame and while Atkinson is in the NHL now, Fast is knocking on the door. The Rangers arguably have good depth on the RW even minus Callahan (Nash, Zucc, Kristo, and Fast) and I don't think they need to necessarily trade for someone to take his place on the 3rd RW.

They need NHL center depth, especially in the top-6. Unfortunately just short of a high upside prospect, you are not getting a top-6 center in return for Callahan. Maybe if he was re-signed and traded to a team with great C depth.
