The team looks like they are have found a balance with AV's system, something many people didn't think the current lineup were even capable of.

On top of that we actually have a PP that can score and change momentum.
If the team can start to play this way consistently and establish themselves they have a good chance getting out of the east.

Even strength scoring is way down, and in the playoffs a good PP can only save you so many times. We need serious improvements to even strength play before we can establish ourselves as any kind of threat.

The reason for it is because when Rask is on his game really the only way to beat him is rebounds and screens. Primarily screens because he isn't the biggest guy.

As well as NYR have moved the puck recently we haven't banged in enough goals from the crease. That's usually an area where Callahan and Stepan have excelled.

Only deal I can see them making right now is DZ for a young RD. Falk could be in a deal too for another Dman

Forwards are doing too well and Dorsett will be back after the Olympics. That will add more toughness.

I think we need to be a bit tougher around our own net as well if we want to beat Boston. Seems like they are constantly scoring rebound and deflection goals.

So because two teams fluked their way to the stanley cup in the last 5 years, we can too? Brilliant thinking, honestly.

Maybe it's not a fluke. Maybe parity has hit the NHL and the difference between 8th and 1st in the Eastern Conference isn't that great. But that's too much for you to think about...
Have you even looked at the context of this conversation? I said we're not contenders, therefore we SHOULDN'T be trading assets for veterans.

Context? Somebody that wants to trade Girardi and Callahan for prospects and picks WHILE the Rangers have finally turned things around is talking about context...Seriously?
I'm against trading our assets for veterans so I want a shiny new toy? l o l okay man. It's happy hour somewhere right?

No, it's because you want to trade proven homegrown talent for unproven prospects and picks. It's because you assume that if the contracts aren't signed already they will never sign. You just want a new young player to fawn over....I get it....

I'll get back to rooting for my team to fail supposedly, have fun in fairy tale land.
Rooting for them to lose because that's the only way the team will trade Girardi and Callahan for prospects. Why are you rooting for the Rangers? You already believe the season is over and they have no shot....Right?

How funny is it that we are discussing about our PP saving us in the playoffs because our even strength scoring is now bad?

Funny to read about.

That's not the point. We're not in a position to give up assets for a 37 year old UFA. We aren't contenders, and Dan Boyle doesn't make us one.

is that what's being discussed? Bleh! SJ is doing well this season. They will want him for their playoff run. There is no way they'd trade Boyle anyways. I thought it would be as a UFA signing.

Flyers and Devils made it to the finals in the past 5 years.

Both lost to the superior team. The Devils got crushed.

Maybe by some stroke of luck the Rangers make it out of the East, okay, but they will be destroyed in the SCF.

This team as it stands is not a Cup contender. It's just not, sorry.

Where have NJ and Philly gone since their cup runs? Nowhere. Not even close to a cup. I don't know a much better definition of fluke out there.

I don't believe this team is a cup contender so I've given up on them? Lol. Alright. Because that's how a fan works right? Why would I even come on this website if I felt that way? I'll support this ****ing team until I'm dead, no matter what situation they're in. That doesn't mean I have to have sunshine and rainbows expectations for them. They're still not ****ing contenders by the way.

I like how you keep throwing the word homegrown as if I'm supposed to take that into consideration when I analyze a player. A homegrown player and a player traded for are worth the same. It's nice to have homegrown ones, but what the hell does it matter if you have a superstar doing his job, homegrown or not? It doesn't.

I still fail to see what's wrong with trading players that A) I don't think get resigned (among many others) and B) I don't feel fit in the system moving forward. And you don't agree and it makes me a bad fan? Whoopdie ****ing doo. It's a forum to write opinions. Don't like opinions? Get off the internet.

Lol I'm still waiting for you to quote me on where I say "I hope this team loses so we can finally trade Callahan and Girardi". Everything is in one ear and out the other with you. You can post all the same garbage about how I feel apparently but it doesn't make any of it true. I've rebutted the same points 800 ****ing times and you're still pissing and moaning about my opinions on other players.

I can't take it anymore with the sewage you type. My braincells are dying by the second. Bye now.

It's a strange world when the power play is playing so well. Maybe if Torts practiced the power play we beat the Devils two years ago...Who knows....

It's more of the fact that Sather still wants to trade for him, as if he's learned nothing about analysis of his own players.

He already did.

Speaking of shiny new toy, and instant gratification. His position on this team is the absolute pinnacle of the instant gratification chart. There is nothing more instantly gratifying then the win now mentality and going for it this year, every year. I am willing to sacrifice my instant gratification for the sake of this franchise in the long term. The big picture. I want to have confidence that my favorite team has a chance to win it all every year. I don't want to have to rely completely on luck, getting all the bounces, and the other team underachieving. That's all this team has. They're not good enough to beat the best on skill alone in a 7 game series, let alone the best in the East, and West.

I'm not a real fan because I want to win 4 playoff rounds instead of 1 or 2 every year.

That sums it up...

Yeah I know, it's the strawman argument people like you have when faced with the reality of this franchise.

People who want to see something better aren't even real fans, why are you even here, why do you even rout for this team? Why do you even watch games?

"OMG! You want the team to suck, you want the team to lose! Are u even fan, bro!?"

And everyone thought the Kings weren't the cream of the crop when they won. Canucks were the "powerhouse 1 seed" and they dismantled them.

It's easy to look back in retrospect and say "well they were clearly the better team". In 5 years, we could be looking at whichever team wins the cup this year and say the same thing. Current day, about that same team, we could all have disagreements about how legitimate they are.

Do I think the Rangers, as they are built, will win the cup? No. It is unlikely. Foolish to let a month let us get ahead of ourselves. But we've played great and played great against a tough schedule. We've been above average on the road all year, even when we struggled, and now we're figuring it out at home. Our offense is creating more chances in 1 month that we had in 4 seasons under our old coach. Our defense is beginning to become cohesive, with everyone coming into their own as of late. And most amazingly, our star goaltender has refound himself and playing lights out hockey.

This team isn't a joke. The only time it was a joke was when they let their demeanor speak that way. What did I complain about the entire beginning of the season? Their lack of resilience. Lack of resilience is an indicator of bad character. They have been coming back in games consistently, playing 60 minutes of hockey. As long as that continues on a consistent basis, the sky is the limit for the team.

Projecting that it will continue also means another thing. We will be buyers at the deadline. I think we'll target one of Stastny, Subban, or Kessler. I think we'll also target a 2nd or 3rd pairing veteran, hard nosed, defender... like a Douglas Murray.

Everyone buying this Callahan trade koolaid is missing the big picture. Teams don't just leak this type of information. Ploy to lower his demands.

That's a pipedream. We would have to give up too many painful pieces in return.

People may have overrated the Canucks, but literally no one with half a brain thought the Kings were actually a bubble team 8th seed. No one. Everyone knew they underachieved hard, and while no one saw the run they had coming, people recognized they were a legit threat.

No one is saying that about New York, because it's not even close to true.

At our payroll, with the names we have, with the experience we have, with the level of talent we have... it is safe to say we have underachieved.

Just because we're close to the situation and personally biased doesn't mean it's true when we claim that they're actually a bad team. Bad teams don't consistently make it to the playoffs year in and year out. We've gone to the 2nd round or further these last few years. We know a way to get it done and we tend to over achieve in the playoffs. I don't think we're as far away as many here are led to believe.

Problem is, trading for a piece to put us over the top, hypothetically, will set this franchise back from sustained dominance. We'll grow thin on prospects and organizational depth to get the one piece.

The biggest difference for me is this team is not the team who made it under Torts. Different players, different brand, everything is different. We have no idea what to expect out of this group playing the way they are now, and honestly maybe that's a strong argument for the "anything can happen" crowd, but to me it just as much gives me zero faith considering the short comings.

If Sather makes some splashes at the deadline and fills holes, I still won't be convinced unless they suddenly go on some ridiculous tear. I just don't see it happening. The Metro has been a gift for this team, but it is giving fans false hope.

It's ok for you to assume what type of fan I am but when I call you out you don't like it? I get it....I'm not into instant gratification but I'm really not into the fantasy mentality where teams trade two important pieces when they are in contention for a playoff spot. Do you see me posting lets trade for Boyle? Do you see me saying lets go for it? Two months ago I was all for trading Callahan and Girardi, you know why? Because the team looked terrible. Now things are different. You can't accept that and that's fine. If the team struggles before the deadline and and it's not likely they are going to make the playoffs they should trade these players. I'm a realist, I'm not somebody that wants to blow things up because the team isn't perfect.

I shouldn't have cut your post like I did. I know better than that but if you want to put words in my mouth, if you want to assume my thoughts on the team based on NOTHING I've posted....What do you expect?

My original post was lets see how things play out and if the team isn't going to resign Callahan and Girardi trade their rights. That's not an option for you. You want them traded now. For what? I don't know, it seems like you would move them for picks and prospects. That's not realistic. I've already explained why. Doesn't matter to you though...

You get a better haul if you trade a player before the trade deadline as opposed to at the draft, especially when those players are unrestricted free agents. Simple.

It's terrible asset management. You want to re-sign both, then re-sign both. But if you know that it's not going to get done then you have to maximize the return. Letting their contracts run out is not good asset management.

I do think we can make it to the ECF. Question is whether we can beat Pittsburgh or Boston (who are the favorites to get there) if we get there.
