I think the Rangers could get assets for:

Gaborik
Asham
Pyatt
Boyle
Maybe Powe as well

I would look to move them all. All of them are signed for 1 more season. None of them really fit this team all that well. The team needs an injection of youth with a touch of veteran leadership. Fasth, Lindberg, Miller, Kreider, Hrivik (when he comes back), Thomas, MZA and Haley. They have players who will push for spots. I see no reason why they can't leave 2-3 spots open for those players to grab next season easily. Go out and augment them with players like Tootoo or Prust who can drop the gloves and grind and stick up for their teammates to make the younger players feel more comfortable (see Montreal).

That would be my goal this deadline.

I'd disagree on Powe and Asham. On a regular team they'd make 2 very solid 4th line players. Powe does great on penalty kills too. Don't want to give him up and don't want to give up the only player that we have that is actually willing to drop the gloves.

so we are all on the same page.

Torts is not going to tweak his system.

He's a professional coach that has a Stanley Cup Ring. He's a head-strong individual that believes in the system that helped get him that ring.

Sather is more likely going to have to tweak the coach.

Torts isn't changing jack squat about his approach to the game.

He played a completely different system in Tampa. We thought that we would be getting it here. Instead, Torts has turned this team into a boring, shot blocking, dump and chase team with no chance of scoring more than 2 goals.

Better hang onto Haley and Asham...or we will have a problem keeping guys from running us all game long . You think the Ottawa series was physical last year...wait until we have nobody that will battle on our club . Playoffs are not usually fast skating cleanly played high scoring affairs...especially the first round ...usually a war !

Agree with this. In an ideal world the Rangers fourth line is Asham - Boyle - Powe.

Asham is a maybe depending on what would be coming back. If they can get a decent return I say move him and bring in someone who can replace him in the off-season. Moen may be available for cheap.

I wouldn't move Haley.

Even with his 2nd breakaway goal in as many opportunities, I'd still take Haley over Asham.

This. I really wouldn't mind keeping them both IF the return on Asham wasn't up to par. I say I would try and move those guys, but in the real world, most likely a couple of them wouldn't return much so I would hold onto them. To me, it doesn't matter which ones are held onto.

And by those guys I mean the ones I mention above.

Given that I'm not a GM, I'm not certain of who is available, but Dan Boyle and Steve Ott definitely fit.

and neither one are going to change the dynamic enough to give us a legit shot at beating Pitt or Boston in the first round.

Ott is a glorified 3rd liner. He doesn't address the need for a top 6 winger.

Boyle, playing on a team with all sorts of offensive talent has exactly 13 points.

What is he going to do here?

But yeah, lets give up significant assets for a fading defenceman.

That will get us out of the first round for sure.

I thought Asham was very good last night.

Better than any game Haley has had.

To tell you the truth, I'd rather have those 2 in the lineup over Taylor Pyatt and Brian Boyle, who take shift after shift with no real direction or purpose.

Asham makes me eat crow. I won't lie. Guy has a pretty damn good shot. Despite that, he's the second oldest player on the team I believe, after Hamrlik, and I'd rather sacrifice his wee bit of offense for Haley's volatility.

Look at the moves Pittsburgh made, those are real hockey moves that improve their club.

All we do is waive and demote players for AHL scrubs.

It's easier for them to make those. Their team is pretty established and now they're just painting the shed.

We have a very delicate roster and trading things like our 2nd round pick isn't the greatest of ideas.

As someone who expected a bad year, I feel like I'm freaking out less than most.

The Rangers really NEED just two pieces: A legit 2nd line two-way center, and a good defenseman with a hard shot.

Not easy to get, but not impossible, especially since they don't need the D-man to play the toughest defensive minutes.

Other concerns amount to moving guys in to the right spot, or shifting around grinders, which will be far easier once these other pieces are in place (well, if they ever are).

Agree on Boyle, disagree on Ott.

Ott is the third line center this team is craving. Buffalo asks for a lot more than we should be willing to give though when Sather calls Darcy.

Don't count Buffalo out yet either. They might not be sellers here. "new" owner and a GM looking to save his job. On a three game win streak, and just three points behind the 8th place New York Hockey Rangers.

Who would you put on the block at the deadline? I mean, outside of Gaborik, what useful assets to we really have to deal that we'd be willing to give up? Boyle? Pyatt? Zucc? Some depth defenders? I dunno. It sounds good in theory, and I agree with you that this team shouldn't be buyers, but selling is a tough call when there isn't much to sell.

Building for next year sounds good to me though. I'd like to see Tortorella get sent out as well.

I don't even know what page the management is on, so I really couldn't tell ya. My instinct tells me they will keep Torts and try to bring in players that fit his style better. Round and round we go !

Awesome! Can't wait to infuse some more jam onto this squad! :yo:

This thread is about trade speculation. Marc Staal's injury can be discussed elsewhere.

At this point is it even worth another player change? Do we need one?

Problem seems to be coaching related. Not enough adjustments. Player mismanagement.

Ryan Ellis just got sent to the AHL. I had mentioned him a while ago as a potential target in a package for Gaborik. Is he disappointing in Nashville? Bourque, Ellis, 1st...

Guys, please stay on topic. We have threads dedicated to team toughness and Marc Staal. Don't post it here.

It's too bad that if Buffalo decides to blow it up, they would probably like to keep Ott.

Perfect 3C for this team. Even though he's a real ***** on the ice.

But they're only 2 points behind us, so I doubt we see many blowups.

Craig Custance on the Rangers
He mentions the Rangers kicking the tires on Yandle but no serious talk of any deal. Have you seen his contract? :shakehead

That's an interesting factoid, why would they sniff around Yandle?
I would take him and his contract for Gaborik, but then what do you do with McD, Staal or DZ?
Just to follow this logic and dream a little, if you trade one of them for a stud RD, Blues are interested in a trade around Shattenkirk-Staal, the D becomes

Yandle - Shattenkirk
McD - Girardi
DZ - Stralman
Eminger

Not too shabby.

One can dream.

This team is on pace for the worst Rangers offensive performance in close to 60 years.

So, Im not ready to sacrifice even a wee bit of offense at this point
