The thing about the salary cap is that it makes subtle signings and good ELC performances critical. The Rangers have a team that needed performance from rookies and small time players to fill it out. It hasn't been good enough, and of course the star players haven't been up to it either.

But we're in striking position for the playoffs, still. There shouldn't be talk of blowing anything up.

Well, this is the Ranger board. You'll have fingernails scraping the big red button right up until Bettman hands Callahan the Cup.

And I'm not saying that Hank will be over the hill by 34 if we are going to set an arbitrary number for seasons needed to recover from a hypothetical blowup, but we have strong pieces now. We may not be able to compete just yet but I think we can fix this team without removing 98% of it off the surface of Manhattan.

I understand, but I could say without a doubt, if I took Powe, Pyatt, Asham, Boyle, Hamerlik, Gilroy, Stralman and replaced them with A, B, C, D, E, F and G, you wouldn't even notice it. To make it even worse (as they're playing now) you could also include Richards and Gaborik and stick in player H and I... Might actually be a better team....

That's a bit different. I very much agree that we can find some value in moving those guys around. I'd like to keep Stralman though. My post was more of in reaction to Kershaw's Seppeku proposal.

yes it was, I asked for names of players that would increase our odds of advancing past the first round of the PO's.

If you blieve adding one or both Boyle and or Ott increases those odds, then we have watched two very different teams over the last 2 months.
I'm beginning to wonder now if you understand what the word increase means.

This team really misses Prospal IMO, not sure what the BJ's signed him for, but we really, really miss him. I could see him feeding Nash and really lighting it up this year. But who knows.... sigh.....:(

Edit : Miss his style of play (to clarify), guy really has a nose for the puck down low....Kinda like watching Columus play, like watching the Rangers farm team or something.. lol

I do, but to me marginal differences mean jack squat.

we add both Ott and Boyle and we are done in 5 against Pitt. We don't add Ott and Boyle and we are still done in 5.

They are not the type of impact players the Rangers need.

the Rangers need a legit top 6 scoring threat on the LW (or two)

A third line center (ott fits that bill)

A bottom pairing defenceman that is physical.

Ultimately, we need a coach that is going to devise some form of balanced attack that enables the Rangers to generate offence off the rush and not this dump and chase BS.

I didn't realize you knew exactly how the season was going down. My bad.

I wish there was a single trade that could/would make the team better. I'm not sure there is. Is the target another top-6 winger? A RHD that can QB the PP? A bottom-six guy that adds grit and faceoff wins?

I don't know which one we truly need, and they certainly can't all be addressed with one trade.

While your latter two are enticing, I'd still aim high for either a top 6 winger or center. This team hasn't given up more than 3 goals in over a month. We need offense. Two goals scored against us is a death sentence.

I just don't know what's really out there.

Me neither. Usually around deadline time there's names that make sense. Not so much this year. Top 6 wingers are never that easy to come by anyway.

I'm almost as frustrated thinking about trade options as I am watching this team. Never mind, it's still not nearly as frustrating.

Based off of Pittsburgh's moves, they've set it as more of a sellers market it seems. We could move Gaborik and Boyle/Powe/Anyone on the Bottom 6 really and basically write this season off.

But with that last sentence, we come full circle yet again. This season is really one of the more baffling experiences in my sports fandom.

I'm beginning to wonder if the issue is a lack of talent or something else. We can't be this bad. There's enough ability here isn't there?

I mean, I don't think this team is all that great (felt the same way last season), but we have enough scoring firepower that should keep us out of leagues cellar when it comes to goals, even with our awful bottom 6.

**** rolls downhill. Richards is awful, which leaves Gaborik without his assist man, which leaves Nash as the only legitimate scoring threat on that line, which leaves Hags-Step-Cally as our only scoring threat etc. etc.

Problem is like most fans (MYSELF included) is that we saw how good we were last season, and then us adding Nash, we expected to be even better. The team thought it would be a easy coast to the top of the conference. Well its not.

The team will wake up, i still have a lot of faith, we will end up 5th or 6th. We will have a great final quarter of the season.

We need a 3c and a 2nd line LW.. That would give us some good depth, but again, it wont matter until Richards starts to get his head out of his ass.

No. Taylor Pyatt is our 7th best forward. That's a big problem.

No.

Even as much as i can put down the players I can easily say, he has been the worst and most useless player on this team since game 4.

Haven't disliked a player like him in years.

Agreed. I was saying he was a terrible signing/bad player at the time of it, but I was given false hope because he was playing like he gave a **** early on. He plays nothing like a grinder, but tries to play like a PWF if that makes sense.

I have no problem with him personally. Looks like a cool dude. Just just doesn't do much of anything. Doesn't bring anything to the table doesn't take anything off. You won't see him make many mistakes but he's not gonna be doing anything good either.

Pyatt has terrible board work on the cycle and is only in the NHL because of his size. He has a little scoring touch, but won't score more than 10-14 in a full season.

I asked about the value of Derek Stepan in the trade forum, but from this post, it doesn't appear the Hawks/Rags make a good trade partners. The Hawks would probably make Bolland available for Stepan, but that's probably not nearly enough...
