I think the issue is that the system is asking Gabby to hunt down pucks like Hagelin, and thats something Gabby isn't doing out there consistently enough. Its a very simple system, collapse, block shot, clear the puck, and have the speedster chase it down and create offense... Or grab it and move as a 5-Man unit up the ice, and that isn't suiting our mercurial sniper who likes to get lost in coverage.
Team is built from the back end out, and is missing Marc Staal, once he gets back, it eases matters out there, but the lack of depth, and push back needs to be addressed for said system to work. Players that don't buy in night in night out are likely to be moved. I think the Rangers are going to fill their roster up like Boston, Chicago, Washington, LA, and NJ. Which is why the hunt for the right handed D becomes imperative. Outside of your skilled wingers, all defensemen and checkers play their strong side, two righty centers, two lefty centers, and multiple wingers that can take draws. Methinks the Rangers are experimenting with it in the minors, but someone who watches closely can better tell you if that's the reason for their recent run.
