What happens if Girardi and/or Stralman don't sign and aren't traded? Klein at LEAST gives us a safety net, sort of.

Acquiring Klein has done absolutely nothing to make this team worse.

If the Rangers traded for Klein to move Stralman out, I'm strongly against the move.

The Rangers already made their team worse when they downgraded MDZ for Klein. Moving Stralman out to accommodate Klein's salary makes this deal from bad to terrible.

Stralman is an excellent puck moving and transition defenseman who doesn't rack up points because of it. We should be grateful for that because he'll come cheaper.

Klein is 29. He is what he is. He could be a top 4 guy in a pinch, but would be ideally suited for the 3rd pair -- much the same way I feel about Stralman.

Moore can skate like a wind, but scares the piss out of me in every other aspect of the game. Hes got room to develop.

But yes, declaring this a top 4 pair of the future after 2 games is absurd.

Stralman's slowed down lately, but I think it's insulting to him to be compared to Klein. Klein is a #5-6 dman at best, meanwhile Stralman has filled in adequately with Staal the past 2 years and Del Zotto in his breakout season. He's quietly been an effective puck moving top 4 dman on this team. Probably the biggest UFA NYR bargain since the lockout excluding Girardi.

have i missed any important updates regarding cally and girardi today?

Cally wants 7 years, at least $6 mill per. Safe to say Sather will go nowhere near that and he's reportedly started shopping Callahan (gauging teams' interest on Cally). So, nothing really different on the Callahan front.

Rangers have reportedly given Girardi two offers: one for 6 years at $5.5 mill per, and one for 5 years at over $5.5 mill per (don't know the exact number).

Yeah, apparently their demands are real modest but Slats is hell bent to make term the last hill he will fight for. Unbelievable.

Slats want 4-5 year deals, they want 6-7. Just when they will become real cheap Slats want them to turn UFA again.

Ehhhh I don't really agree with that. He can consistently play on the 2nd pair.

IMO: The D is fine. If salary negotiations can't be reached then somone will be traded. Otherwise, I believe the D will remain as it is.

While I understand the need for an uptempo D I believe the problems up front are greater. If Cally is traded then the team needs to fill his spot with a more prolific scorer and the team still needs a 1st line center. The D and goalie should be able to keep the team in most games. The front line still has holes.

In addition, I'm not sure that Cally will bring as much back as many think. If he can return 1 top 6 forward that's about all I can see.

Um, that is a really creative interpretation of Cally's demand for a 7-year $6MM per AAV deal. And Girardi sounds like he'll get done at 5-6 years at $5.5MM per or a little more.

So, the PROPER interpretation is that they're close on Girardi and Callahan has forced Slats to explore the trade market.

 What? Callahan's demands are far from modest. Girardi's is right around what I'd be willing to pay for him and Sather's offers seem close enough that a deal will be done.

I disagree. 3rd pairing Dmen do not play 20 minutes a game which was Klein has done for the past 5 seasons. He is a great shotdown guy and he is not a stepdown from Stralman and certainly not a stepdown from Del Zotto.

Girardi at 7 x 5.5 is more than fair. He'd get offered 6 x 6 as a UFA 30 seconds into free agency.

Luckily it looks like Girardi is neither looking for 7 years nor will he be getting it. 5 or 6 years between 5.5 and 6 million is what Girardi's next contract is starting to look like more and more.

I would resign Dominc Moore, FWIW.

Me too, I think he is playing real well.

I'd keep everyone. BR included. Definitely Strålman.

Boyle, like I said, is probably leaving. A bit unfortunate, but someone will pay him as a 3rd lineer, and we could basically end up saving like 1.5+m on that spot.

We got plenty of room to adjust this roster, when / if a opertunity arise.

In the past 5 years, the majority of his linemates' games have dropped when he was paired with them. He isn't a player that should be averaging 20 minutes a game, unless you have ambitions of getting severely outshot over the course of the season.

I seriously can't wrap my head around the idea of keeping Richards. Like, seriously?

I also don't think it will or should happen. But the Rangers center depth is UGLY.

And I hate the idea of replacing him with Stastny almost as much as I hate the idea of keeping Richards.

We could just not sign Stastny and give Miller a spot he will almost certainly earn.

Unfortunately it's the situation they've put themselves in. Like you said, the depth is brutal without Richards, and because of that, they're going to have to pay open-market price for a replacement. Whether you qualify Brassard and add a true #3 like Ott, or pursue someone like Legwand or Stastny, they're not going to reap all of the cap savings of the Richards buyout. Most of it will go out quick.

Very similar to the situation of TB buying Lecavalier out and then adding Filppula in free agency.

Hopefully for next season Miller can be that true #3 center that the team currently lacks. Some stability and not having him on a yo-yo between Hartford and NY will do wonders for the kid.

Or Lindberg.

I'm with you guys obviously that is best case. The Rangers just can't be caught with their pants down again like they were when Kreider wasn't ready in the short season. Maybe there is a UFA vet they can sign cheap to come in and pot 40-50 points. I don't know.
