Rather than pay DeBrincat $8 or $9 mil I would rather trade him for something they need like the best RD DeBrincat could return. Ottawa would still have a very good young top 6 without him. It's the bottom six that they need to improve on & the bottom pairing on defence.

Tkachuk - Norris - Batherson
Stutzle - Pinto - Giroux
Kastelic

Chabot - Zub
Sanderson

Potential Internal Bottom Six & 3rd Pairing Replacement Players:

Ostapchuk - Greig - Boucher
Kleven - JBD

- Formenton LW, Jarventie LW, Crookshank LW, Sokolov RW, Latimer RW, Petersson RW

Stop with the futures... That is going into 10 year rebuild territory. "Next year we have....then we have X 2 years from now." Look at Dorions drafting history since he's been with the Sens.

Ottawa has 8 or 9 players on their current roster that they have drafted with a few more coming next yr. Two seasons ago both Stutzle & Norris were in the running for the Calder Trophy & this yr they added to rookies Pinto & Sanderson who are both in the running for a Calder Trophy. Brady Tkachuk has become one of the premier power forwards in the NHL & is again leading this team in scoring. Drake Batherson has turned into the best playmaker on the team & is consistently one of the best point producers on the team. This is a young team that is learning how to win the hard way & have to be better defensively if they want to make the playoffs, they are inching closer every yr.

trade debrincat for me its normal.. ( + with him is 8-9 M money, )

if we can add really top four D ,and some minimum 1-2 good roster players will be norm. :)..

for fear weak top 6 .... we have pinto + will have greig soon also

p.s what i saw hi is not good in D zone ( it was clear :d we have no hope about his D )...... in offence hi can score, absolutely fast realise ... good passer , very quick and fast brain.. but anyway i will be ok if we trade him, its not game changer player..

Tolvanen is shit and will clear. What role does he play on an NHL team? A large portion of his meagre production [nearly 40%] has come on the powerplay, and he's just not good enough to be in that role at this level. So what does he do for you? On top of all that he's got another year at 1.45M. Awful.

We'd be better served giving Sokolov one last crack at making the NHL.

solid defensive player at the very least, would rather have him in the lineup then kelly/watson/gambrell. It is a low bar but still an upgrade

Unfortunately that's ottawas real time line to contend. I'm here to win a cup not just be mediocre like the last 15 years.
Im here for winning the cup too but at some point we have to try an expedite the timeline just based off our core and the contracts. We did the same thing when we traded for ADC.

That being said im not saying to trade #2 (or any non first overall pick) for cheap or an old guy. I want a dman younger then 25 that has top pairing potential/is on the top pairing that is either on his elc or signed for term (so not like our ryan/duchene/adc moves). Will a dman that fits into that category be available who knows but thats what im targeting if I was in charge

LWOS says:

Skating

Tolvanen is a very good skater. He has very good top-end speed. Tolvanen uses a quick first step and excellent acceleration to elude defenders and get himself open to fire a shot on goal. He can beat his man to the outside. When Tolvanen gets a step on his man, he can drop his shoulder and cut to the net. He can also make a number of quick cuts, and uses strong agility to beat his man one-on-one. Despite his small stature, Tolvanen is strong on the puck and has good balance on his skates. He is tough to knock over when he is battling for pucks along the boards.

Offensive Game

Tolvanen is a pure sniper who scores goals in a variety of different ways. He reads the play extremely well, and gets himself into the right position to create a scoring chance. Tolvanen has an outstanding one-timer, with great power and accuracy. He also has a lightning quick release on his wrist shot. That wrist shot is heavy, and he is also very accurate. Tolvanen has the soft hands to make quick moves and beat defenders with his stick handling ability. Tolvanen’s snap shot is also deadly. He can fire that vast assortment of shots in stride. He can also bury rebounds and has the hand-eye coordination to get deflections in front of the net as well.

Yeah Tolvenen over Parker Kelly any day. You also have someone with the pedigree that can move up in a top 6-9 role.

the role he plays on the Sens would be “better than the wingers they currently have”.

He’s a decent nhl player. I remember posts like yours about Hoffman and Paul too.. it’s these kinds of players that have a greater chance of becoming something

Who do you think the Ottawa senators are? What do we do?

I think he’s perfect a guy to play with pinto and Joseph. Also a big shot option on pp2. And defensively reliable. This team needs to start building back the depth we lost with formenton Paul and brown. He’s a good candidate to at least try

Here are some thoughts on the development time for a drafted player to graduate or develop.

Brady (a 4th overall) played for the Senators the same year he was drafted (2018). He did have a few injuries early in his first season though. For Sanderson (a 5th overall), it was one year. Even Pinto (1st pick of the 2nd round) graduated quickly if you remove the COVID and his injury. Stutzle played in the same year he was drafted.

This is supposed to be a deep draft. One variable is of course where in the draft the player was drafted (how close to 1st overall).

Here are some thoughts on the contracts that we have for our core players. I do think we need to remember that:
  • Brady's contract is for 5 more years
  • Stutzle's contract is for 8 more years
  • Norris's contract is for 7 more years
  • Batherson's contract is for 4 more years
  • Chabot's contract is for 5 more years.
And, all of the players named above are already past the "development" timeline. That's not to say they won't continue to get better, just that are legit NHL regulars and that they aren't green as grass anymore.

Our contention window should be open for a pretty decent amount of time. If we look at our cross province rivals, their 2 top players have been in the league 7 years.
