Toronto can't make that trade. They have less than 700K in cap space and Simmonds only makes 900K.

They have 3 options: play him, trade him for a player on a similar dollar contract who might fit their team better, or trade him and pay the other team to absorb 900K and a contract.
They can just bury him, no? I don't see any urgency on their end, if they send him to the minors his salary is low enough that there is full cap relief.

Yes, they can bury him. The issue is that he then goes to their farm team.

Honestly, if they have to send him down and not play him in the NHL, they would want to loan him to someone else's farm team. If you are going to send him to a level he doesn't want to be at, at least give him a fresh start around kids that aren't in line to take the job that he wants.

Next offseason Ottawa might get a cap crunch re-signing Zub and Debrincat. We've all seen this by looking at capfriendly. There is the possibility of a 4M increase instead of a 1M increase, but we can't really rely on it.

1. We don't want to give up good picks getting rid of Zaitsev.
2. Even if we buy him out, a minimum replacement only saves us about 1M in cap hit.
3. We'd still get an extra 2024 cap hit of 800K. Virtually no cap savings.

Solution: Tucker Poolman. Why it might work:

1. Vancouver is in the same boat as Ottawa. If they buy Poolman out, they get 3M in cap hits over 4 years and would have to pay for a replacement. Barely any savings. If anything it costs them more in cap and salary to replace him.
2. Trading Poolman for Zaitsev saves them 3.5 M in salary and 500K in cap.
3. Acquiring Zaitsev does accelerate the cap hit from two years to one year but if they can't re-sign Horvat, they're going to be 13.5M under the cap anyway. This only takes that from 13.5M to 11.5M.
4. It would give both players a change of scenery which might rejuvenate their play.

Thoughts?

Have you ever seen that Simpsons episode where the town is over run by Bolivian tree lizards, and then Skinner says they'll solve that problem with needle snakes, and then he says they'll solve THAT with Gorillas?

Vancouver can keep Tucker " the Chinese Needle Snake" Poolman.

That is some bad writing.

Does anyone believe the quote below? We would be a fool not to lock that up.

“Dorion did offer Zub a three year contract before training camp. It's widely known that Zub's camp wants a four to five year deal with an AAV in the four to five million range.”
Francis also writes that Dorion calls Armstrong daily "for updates on Chychrun's health plus to see if the asking price has changed". I think Pinocchio's nose grew a little longer with that one.

Friedman says he doesn’t think chychrun is going to Ottawa
Early returns on our existing D looks promising to me.

I’d forget Chychrun altogether and focus on resigning Zub.

I’m completely comfortable with our current left side and Zub. Bringing up 1 of JBD/Lassi and adding a physical stay at home RD in the summer should be sufficient.

Brannstrom developing and Sanderson being the real deal is so good for us.

I agree. I can also see the Sens using most of this season to see what they have in Thomson/JBD in the AHL. If they don't feel comfortable, they will likely make a move for a right hand D for a playoff push + early access to re-sign him moving into next year. Hamonic rides off into the sunset. Thomson/JBD ride as 7th D.

One way or another, I see us adding support to that right side, whether it's Thomson, whether Hamonic holds, or whether it's external.

The emergence of Sanderson + Brannstrom so far this season has significant reduced urgency for D. Also hope we see them as a pairing soon.

I really think you can lock in our D core as Chabot/Zub/Sanderson/Brannstrom and then 2 spots for JBD/Thomson/Klevin (Holden and Hamonic as stop gaps).

If close to playoffs, then can see us upgrading those stop gaps.

I think for the most part in the early season our defense has been solid a large part due to brannstrom stepping up. We should work on dumping zaitsev and nothing else. Wait till the off season see if we can bring in another UFA

Kevin Francis literally hasn’t hit on any of the ‘rumours’ coming from his ‘sources’. There’s a reason why he gets zero attention from credible hockey writers lol

What’s the deal with Norris? Is there a chance the Sens would move him to open space (cap and opportunity) for Pinto? I get that they just signed him long term, but just curious.
