Keep Zaitsev and get retention on Chykrun then move Zaitsev next summer after he dominates in Belleville.
Whatever works to get Chychurn in OTT because you need at least 3 capable dmen in the back end. Right now we have 2.

Have we traded for Chychrun yet?

He’s going to need at least 45 minutes with the boys before puck drop opening night.

Holy moly am I excited for Jake. You guys just don’t know how good he is.

I’m the Tyler Kleven guy and I’m willing to part with him for Jake - that’s how good he is.

If only Kleven + 2023 1st was enough for Chychrun

Chabot, Zub and Sanderson is 3. I know Sandy is questionable, but from what I've seen so far he will do well. It's the sophomore year that we might have to worry about with him, but this year he will be just fine. I've seen it before when some of our previous Ds had really good first year (Meszaros, for example).

I think/hope/assume Zaitsev and Formenton are going back in any Chychrun trade. I’m also hoping we can convince Arizona to eat a small amount of Jakes contract.

Next year will be the tightest squeeze ever but the chemistry between these guys is electric. If we can get a couple 1 or 2 year sweetheart deals out of a couple of guys coming up we’d be set up nicely for years to come.

No need to unload Zaitsev if Jake comes with retention. We can deal with that later.

You’re right. He does dilute the value of the trade substantially.

1st, 2nd, Kleven, Formenton should be enough to get it done. Could make the 2nd a conditional 1st based on playoff performance.

Honestly, getting retention on Chychrun would be far more valuable to us than dumping Zaitsev, even just retaining 700k would save us the same 2 mil dumping Zaitsev does in cash albeit over 3 years, and it would help with the cap crunch next year too,

Glad ottawa is realizing their defense is just not good enough

Dreger stated the same on TSN1050 this morning talking about how Dorion wants to upgrade and they don't want to have done all this work to improve the forwards but leave the defense as is. Seems like the players probably wanted that as well

Zaitsev is owed 7M so the equivalent is Chykrun retained is 43%. While that requires a retention spot tied up by Arizona we could thrown in a 2024 2nd.

It would also be more expensive. It would require a guaranteed 3 year commitment from Arizona that they can't trade, buy out, or waive. It would also eat a retention spot.

1 dollar of retention on chychrun is worth more than 1 dollar of zaitsev.

First call ups JBD/Thomson

Crap, forgot about him having 2years left... My bad, I was just thinking about this year.

Face value though, retention on any competent D Ottawa receives is worth more than unloading Zaitsev, assuming they're signed to >2 years.

Imagine if we got Chychrun retained at 2.6M, the cost of retention there would be a 2nd+, but we'd have a top 4 D (presumably) for 3 years at 2M (what we wish we had of Zub).

Then we flip Zaitsev at 2.5M cash, 4.5M cap for another 2nd.

Chabot (8M) - Zub (2.5M)
Chychrun (2.6M) - Hamonic (3M)
Sanderson (925k) - Holden (1.3M)
Brannstrom (900k) - Zaitsev (4.5M)

Followed with a 2023-2024 D corps of:

Chabot (8M) - Zub (5M)
Sanderson (925k) - Chychrun (2.6M)
Brannstrom (900k) - Hamonic (1.75M)
JBD/Thomson

(I could see us resigning Hamonic to 1.75M x 1-2 years). Hopefully we can snag someone like Kelfbom/Orlov for a couple years to shore up on LD too if the Brannstrom experiment fails.

I dont think Zaitsev dilutes the value much at all. Arizona would be absolutely idiotic to turn down the best prospect and best pick just so they can get a better cap dump and a secondary piece.

They have 18 picks in the top 3 rounds of the next 3 drafts, just picked 3x in the 1st and have picked 8x in the top 60 and 11x in the top 100 over the past two years... getting an extra late 2nd or 3rd at the expense of a lower 1st and a worse prospect is not the approach they will take.

This specific scenario is the cheapest way to dump Zaitsev by far... assuming we are willing to offer the pieces that will get a deal done.
