And I'd be fine with that, but Methot didn't get traded for nearly the same package as what's rumoured for Chychrun, so why is the latter's asking price so much higher?

Well, his age for one.

But I'm still a bit leery about whether the asking price could possibly live up to his potential.

EK65 50% retained?

(yes, I'm completely insane...)

I think we're better off remembering what he used to look like in a Senators jersey.

Methot was traded for a pretty good young player in Foligno. Former 1st rounder, was 23 years old at the time of the trade, and had just put up 47 points in 82 games.

I'd argue that a 1st + a couple of prospects that have not yet cracked the NHL is not so much higher.

I'm a Brent Burns fan, I love his game. I think he would be awesome in a Sens Jersey, but I can't see it happening. It's just too cool (for me). And he seems to love the south.

His contract is really affordable, we probably have to do some due diligence to ensure the cap implications don't bite us down the road, but only 3 years remaining, I think he can be a serviceable top 4 D for that period.
It's that third year I really don't like. He could be useful this year and start to slip next year. Last year he was still good, logged a ton of minutes, was still very active and mobile, is nasty to play against. That age though is going to show at some point. If he loses a step we are stuck with him for 3 years and will be looking for a top 4d and trying to move Burns. If he had 1 year for sure if he had 2 years and sucked you could find a way to do something with him next year. Third year makes its harder imo and I don't want to trade for someone we will need to attach assets to get rid of if he doesn't work out.

I like him but the asking price seems steep.

He’d be another Joseph / Formenton type.
4.5-5.5m is high, but I think a lot of guys like him will be priced out of their ask. 3.75m - 4.25m seems like a decent sweet spot for him.

There is about 415m in cap space in the NHL right now (not counting LTIR, but still). About 130m of that is split between Arizona, Buffalo, Detroit and Anaheim. The top 20 FA should sign for approx. 125-150m per year, and that will still leave 100+ regulars unsigned.

no reason why Branny can't be a 2nd pairing guy next year
You need to go back and re read Nyquil's post. But on the subject of Brannstrom he wasn't even a really good 3rd pairing guy last year why is all of a sudden a good 2nd pairing guy this year ? I think it's clear Brannstrom is not in the plans for this team and will likely be dealt in the package for a Dman. I like Brannstrom and was rooting hard for him btw.

ummm Branny was a top 3 guy on our team when he actually played. Also when Chabot went down again he did a great job. I also don't think Sanderson is going to step into a top 4 role out of the gate. Even Zub struggled for most of last year and brannstrom moved ahead

Give him a good player to play with

Weegar would be a dream, but I also don't feel like Florida is going to have cap issues in 2023-2024 or am I missing something?

Even if Huberdeau goes to 10 million (not a penny more than Barkov I am sure) Weegar money can come from the Yandle buyout going from 5.4mil this season to 1.3 mil next?

Brann is really nice to watch on the offence but we need grit and size and toughness to surround Cabby and sandy on the backend

I think Dorion prioritizing a top 4 RD while having Sanderson coming in and Holden/Hamonic on the 3rd pair leads me to believe that Brannstrom won't be here for training camp. I don't think he's in their plans at all.

I’m not sure I would pay that much for Weegar given age and status.
I am with you.

Short sample size but I saw him live in Florida 4-5 games and am not as high on him as some here. Plus in the playoffs he didnt look really good either. My priority would also be fixing the defense but not sure Id pay the price they will ask for even though he is a pretty decent player

Hey man I am open to keeping him I just think the team has moved on. I like him and if we keep him I hope he kills it for us. He had some great games but the guy is going to get killed with the hits he takes. He also really needs to work on the defensive end, he is small and needs to find a way to be effective in his own zone with his stick and speed. Probably doesn't help that DJ is probably yelling at him to cross check people and be physical.

Yeah Brent burns is totally awesome but I don’t see that happening here. He’s going somewhere bigger.

I respect you are a Branny fan. But I want a better player on the 2nd pair than what we have seen from Brannstrom in the NHL.
I can see him rotating in and getting some games on that pair but I don't see that as a season long solution for a team wanting to be in the playoffs.

They need to re-sign Knight after this season and they still need someone to replace Weegar. That defence looks pretty thin if he's gone.
