Because even in 07, we were basically a one line team, kinda similar to the Leafs these days. If we add Giroux, we will legit have 6 potential all star Fwds in our top 6, and a legit Norris candidate in Chabot

HOFer goalie, HOFers in Chara, Alfie, All stars in Heatley, Redden, Spezza, depth down the middle with Fisher, depth on Do with Phillips. On paper that WAS a cup contending team, so much so the media outside ottawa agreed

Forsberg is paid half of what Murray is and has been significantly better since joining the team.

But beyond that, the teams are in very different situations.

We're trying to be in the conversation for a wildcard spot and become a contender in the next 2-3 seasons. Forsberg is a bridge to the guy we'll need (maybe it's Sogaard, maybe someone else) when we're actually in the mix.

The Leafs are quickly hurling towards the end of their window, have lost 6 straight times in the 1st round, and have put their eggs in Matt Murray's basket for the next 2 seasons, which are the last two before Auston Matthews becomes a UFA.

Toronto is definitely not getting better. There depth keeps getting chipped away. They have a really talented core but the surrounding pieces are being downgraded (again).
