He is a young goalie put in an impossible position. He was the best of the three of them at the start when Ottawa was the worst team in the NHL. He barely got to play when they turned it around.

I completely agree. I don't think they should go out and get someone who would play in his place, but rather someone they can fall back on incase he falters for too long while protecting Sogaard. Ideally an AHL goaltender who could play a NHL game or two and not be down right terrible. It's hard to find those types though. There is so much of Gustavsson that makes me excited when I watch him play, I just worry that the mental aspect of being a NHL goaltender isn't there yet. I think they should absolutely give him a shot to prove that it is out of camp.

Gotcha, just checking because following chychrun trade rumors has been driving us mad and this guy’s tweet seemed to gain a little traction.

Hope you guys make a good jump next season!

Well he's just taking a plausible scenario and making a rumor about it

It sounds like we are trading Connor Brown, so I would wait for Ottawa to make that move first as it will likely give us assets we could flip to Arizona or make someone from our current roster/prospect pool available in a deal

I hope they dont trade Brown just for the sake of it. They should wait to see what happens in free agency.

Pierre seems to be playing a game of dominoes here.

Trading Murray opens up the door to make offers on Wednesday.

If he can get Giroux, he can trade Brown and get assets for a RD to play in the top 4.
If Giroux passes on Ottawa, maybe he pivots and targets Manson/Klingberg while hanging onto Brown.

All signs point to G coming here though. I think the strategy will be to offer more than any other team can on a short term deal (ie. $14M over two years), giving Giroux a chance to play at home but still sign another contract after this one, when the cap is higher.

Most teams want more term to lower the cap hit. We're in the opposite situation. We want short-term but can inflate the cap hit.

If you were him, would you take $14M/2 years in Ottawa, $15M/3 years in Carolina, or $16M/4 years in Florida? Let's see how it plays out.

The logic for trying to get Giroux first is that it's probably easier to acquire a RD via trade versus convincing Manson/Klingberg to sign here, but we need more assets to make a deal (that's where Brown comes in).

I'd rather have Dahlen flop for us over Burrows biting people and having to be bought out.

Burrows was the best we could get that would waive to come here - he needed an extension or free cash to move to Ottberia.

Giroux on a 2-3 year term would be BUTTER.

Not a bad scenario for G either. Make great money over a couple of seasons, play in your hometown, see if this thing comes together, and if it doesn't, you can chase a cup like Thornton did somewhere else. He'll be 36-37, could still play if he wants to.

Exactly. I'd even go up to 8M for 2yrs if that's what it takes. After that, both he and the team will have a good idea of where the team is. Then he can sign Spezza-style contracts at near-minimum to chase the cup if that's the position the team is in.

No other team can give him a high AAV. Everyone else will need to spread a deal out to lower the cap hit. We're in a very unique and advantageous position.

Don't help Florida clear cap room (and sign Giroux) by taking Weegar off their hands. It's a trap Pierre.

Dorion has gotten so much better in the last few weeks that he's now trolling Florida, pretending he wants Weegar just so he can go out and get Chychrun instead and handcuff the Panthers into letting Giroux walk right into his grubby little arms.

So, I'm going to admit my complete ignorance on Chychrun.

Be honest:

1. Is he generating so much interest because defencemen are always in demand and he happens to be the best one available right now? I remember Darius Kasparitis and Bobby Holik earning massive contracts because they were the biggest names on the list at the time.

2. Or is he the legitimate article? I hear "top four defenceman" but then I see the kind of packages put together that I think should bring back a legitimate top pairing guy.

3. Icetime-wise, at ~23 minutes, that could be a lower end top pairing guy - but on Arizona he probably has less competition. That's good for 36th (T) in the league or so. That gives me a fair amount of confidence.

4. He has a plus minus of -20, which is 3rd worst on the team, but he played more minutes than the others in the vicinity and the team was not very good.

5. I hear smooth-skating but defensively sound. Offensively, he's sort of middling, but I'd say second pairing numbers. (61st in P/G)

I can't pretend to have seen him or remembered seeing him play.

Yeah. I'd do that. It would be like front loading a contract before AAV became the rule. Giroux might not like not having term, but he'd be guaranteed a bunch of money and he would have the option to chase more or a cup after 2 years.

He was not good last year but tremendous the year before. His ice time would be more if ghost wasn't the #1 pp dman.

I thought he might make team Canada before this past year. Hopefully we are able to buy "low"
