I read all this stuff and I keep coming back to the same question. Why are the Leafs interested in Murray? They obviously don’t look at him like 90% of the people in the Sens board. I guess they want him to play for them. And I’m also guessing they think he can get his game back to a high level. But they also want to minimize their risk by paying him less. Since it’s only money and they seem to have lots of it, they can send him to the AHL if he doesn’t work out. But if he is healthy and gets his mojo back ( you know, what the Sens thought he would do) then they got themselves a playoff experienced goalie with 2 rings entering my his prime years.

I wouldn’t bet on it myself, but if that’s what they think, I would not be adding any sweeteners at all at this stage, never mind solid NHL players like Formenton or Brown or top prospects.

Leafs need a goalie. Cheap.
Sens have one to spare.
Don’t sweeten with retained salary without getting something of value back.
PD has to enter these talks like he’s doing them a favor, not the other way around.

With how much we want to move him, odds are decent his contract isn't insured and we have to pay him in full even on LTIR.
Yes, its a little odd how we were OK with carrying 3 tenders a few weeks and now ostensibly there's a big push to move Murray. Obviously its appealing to move Murray's large salary, but the idea of carrying a 3rd tender given the uneasiness of the 2 that we do have (Gus has only a small amount of experience and his 2nd year wasn't nearly as good as his first) seemed to be pretty reasonable when they talked about it not that long ago.

Crazy thought...if we're suddenly spending money, why not keep Murray, and bury him in Belleville if he falters? And next summer it would be an easier pill to swallow trading him or buying him out or whatever (I think...not entire sure on the buyout figures next year compared to this one).

If the Leafs want 50% retention, and they probably do on account of their cap situation, then I think the most I'd sweeten the deal would be with a 2nd round pick. That's essentially what they paid to dump Mrazek and he had 8.6M owing to him over the next 2 seasons whereas Murray would be owed 7.5M. Maybe the value is slightly more, perhaps a 2nd+3rd.

Murray at 50% retained probably isn't far off from the deal he'd get on the open market if he were bought out. No 'major sweetener' should be required.

You honestly think Ottawa would give up Pinto or Greig just to get rid of Matt Murray? Maybe Greig, but I really don't think it's realistic that they'd trade Pinto or Formenton.
Who knows....And Greig (to me) is worth as much as Pinto or Formenton. Just...no thank you to any of those 3.

Takes more than one trade to earn trust lol
That is exactly true too.

@edguy, you proposed this in the last thread...

Kane @50%
Connor Murphy

For

Ridley Greig
Alex Formenton
Erik Brannstrom
2023 1st lotto protected first
2024 first rounder

But do you know that Patrick Kane is soon 34 y/o and UFA after this season. His salary after bonus is only 2.9 though so that has value to an internal budget team

Connor Murphy is a good defensive D-man, actually similar to a Methot but he has a concussion history.

Problem here is you are giving up 4 first rounders and Erik Brannstrom. I would even argue that Formenton is worth at least a mid first round pick and Greig is worth a top-10 pick. TSN had him as the 18th best prospect in the league in April

Remove Greig and it's maybe a bit closer but also not a very good move for Ottawa to trade a ransom for a rental Patrick Kane when they haven't even sniffed the playoffs yet.

Need to borrow a like from someone please.

Oh so this is why I haven't been getting as many likes as usual! I think too many of you are arguing with a certain poster. I wouldn't know but it's funny because it looks like you are talking to yourselves

Thank Dorion for that ig. feature

Well aware it may be an overpayment. But, our window with all these high end pieces is limited and I am willing to go all in for a thing we have never seen in Ottawa, and this would do it. :stanley::stanley::stanley::stanley::stanley:

Murray is owed 15M over the last two years, if we retain 50%, he eats 3.1m X2 in cap and we pay him 7.5M (someone correct me if I'm wrong).

If we just buy him out, we owe him 2.5 over 4 years, totalling 10M.

If we give up a lot to save 2.5M, I'm going to be extremely annoyed. I don't think he has very negative value as a backup (who can potentially be a starter if healthy) at 3.1M in cap.

I wouldn't be surprised if a 3rd team gets involved to retain a little more (if this is allowed?). A team can get him for 2-2.5M, give assets to a third team, and Murray would have positive value at that price.

Don't waste time dreaming about Patrick Kane. He has an NMC and thete apparently is a very small number of markets he is willing to go to.

My Greatest Masterpiece:

To Toronto
M. Murray (20% retained by Ottawa; 20% retained by Buffalo)
MIN 3rd 2024
OTT 2nd 2025

To Minnesota
A. Kerfoot (50% retained by Ottawa)

To Ottawa:
T. Jost

To Buffalo:
J. Holl
TB 4th 2024 (via OTT)
MIN 5th 2023

Ottawa saves 12m of the 15m salary owed over the next two years on the Murray deal and takes on 2.625m via Jost & Kerfoot (2.25m + .375m, respectively). Salary savings would be approximately $9.5m and asset cost would be 2nd + 4th, plus we would have Jost as an internal option.

Minnesota upgrades from Jost to Kerfoot - while saving desperately-needed cap space - at the cost of a 3rd & 5th.

Buffalo gets Holl, a 4th & 5th for retaining 20% of Murray's deal.

Toronto gets Murray at a cap hit of 3.75m and gains a 2nd & 3rd, while trading Kerfoot & Holl.

It's so obvious Dorion should just eat a chunk of Murray's contract, ship him to TO and call it a damn day, but Mr. 4D chess is probably slowing the deal down by seeing how he can f*** it up by adding assets on his side.
