Maybe, but I doubt it. He knows people aren't dumb - or he should at this point. He's not tempering any expectations at this point.

Plus, his job is on the line. If you trade DBC for scraps, you better use that cap $$ for something good.

Yes, probably we could use fresh blood. But give him some credit, he didn't cave to Arizona's demands for Chychrun.

I think he’s done a decent job of acquiring players but he is horrible at selling top talent

His job is on the line.

Unfortunately, the market for DBC likely isn't producing more than scraps.

As well, the Sens using that cap and money for something good is likely out of his hands, UFA market isn't friendly to Ottawa, unless it's trading for an already signed player, which I don't want Dorion making any kind of trade like that as he's walking the plank already.

So not the "Summer of Pierre" Part Deux. He may pull a gerbil out of his ass yet. He is no doubt sweating buckets on his decision to acquire DeBrincat with no extension. Huge impact on what he can do with the roster this year.

My hope is that he just signs DBC for 1 year, gets some depth pieces and a goalie to round out the roster, and then gets replaced by December by someone else that is more capable to handle the DBC situation at the trade deadline.

Selling top talent requires patience. You need a motivated buyer who has assets he's willing to give up. Trying to trade a top-end asset with little contract term is like having a euchre hand with two bauers and a bunch of off-suit 9's -- if your partner doesn't have anything, you're sunk.

For this reason, signing him for 1 year might present better mid-season trade options.

You could argue that Arizona had too much patience when selling Chych, and had better offers at the beginning.

In a year, that's been descried by almost every single scout, and scouting service, to be unbelievable at the top, and at the very worst average/above average from 6-50, hearing our GM say this is extremely refreshing after the work the staff put in the past 2 drafts. They've been knocking it out of the park since 2021. Not having any Ben Roger's, Filip Nordberg's or Tyler Boucher's in the 1st and 2nd makes it an easy write off.

The demand for DBC isn't going to be high, there isn't going to be a bidding war.
I think it’s the smugness and overconfidence of the quote that gets to me, amplified by the fact that he announced bringing back his coach who can’t win a thing in tne same presser.

only chance of a 1 year deal, is if it makes it to arbitration

Yes, that's the other side of the coin. Your leverage owning the asset decreases as their term, or the season, or whatever the trade window is, nears its end. Any offer you get has to be weighed against potential future offers. A well-connected GM will not only know every team's trade disposition based on direct talks, but also by information gained through a network of scouts, other GMs, and reporters.

He was asked about the coaching.

He was not asked about the quality of the 1st round

I mean no they arent. He is one of the only ones that constantly has idiotic comments to the media that border on insulting to the fan base.
He just talks too much, but they're all the same. I agree though, he needs to shut the f*** up lol

Haha, very true. I'll wait to judge, but it's true.

Dorion vs Debrincat ... take pennies on the dollar or hang on to him and lose him for nothing or be forced to trade him to a contender .. and risk missing the playoffs. Its actually very fitting this is where Dorion finds himself. His future awaits.

Finally, we hear that DBC indicated that free agency only happens once for players and he wasn't going to sign in Ottawa.

Enough of the bullshit that he was just waiting on a new owner, finally.
I hope he added that no one seems to want him and he can hope and pray that Stevie Y will pay him what he wants (which he won't).

I said it the entire time last year at the deadline. If he wasnt going to extend they had to trade him now here we are. So Predictable. This has to be his 9th life.

How do you make the Duchene move then do it again. Its beyond incomprehensible.

It's kinda crazy to think about how poorly this whole DeBrincat situation has played out...

1. Paid a massive price to get a small, scoring winger who typically don't bring huge returns
2. The player has a poor season
3. Team misses the playoffs
4. The player won't engage in contract talks at all, indicates he wants to test the market
5. No cap increase beyond the nominal 1M which makes also makes trades more difficult

Literally everything went wrong here.
