Detroit are going to take us to the cleaners, aren't they?

Then we should probably just hang on to him and move him at the deadline.

There's no reason why the return should be bad, even if we're not going to get a 'fair' deal. Obviously he has limitations for where he would extend but otherwise it's free reign to move him wherever.

Dunno I like Kubalik at 2.5 mil honestly, should be good for at least 15-20 goals, incredibly good value and gives you the flexibility to add solid depth.

I also really like the idea of Comtois for Thomson. Comtois is a rugged guy that had decent upside but could use a change scenery, Ana could use a young RHD with upside that can step right in and make mistakes while they work through it.
Kubalik can bring 15-20 goals but doesn't do much else. He's a mediocre ES player and can help a PP2, and he's fine value at $2.5m.... I just don't think he's a good player on a good team. Just filler. I'd give a mid-range asset for him, nothing more.

Hyman is a far more cerebral player.

Kubalik is really not that interesting imo. I'd take him if its necessary for salary but dont see him as holding much value.

I get it.

On the other hand, he is a big, fairly skilled winger who has produced. In 2019-2020 and 2020-2021, he score at a 55 point pace(pro-rated over 82 games). He produced 45 points last year with Detroit.

If the team gets Kubalik, 17th overall and a 2nd or Breggren, I think we should be jumping for joy, because I don't think we are getting much more than that.

It will give us the financial flexibility to pursue Domi in UFA, who is probably the best/most likely guy willing to come to Ottawa.

Kubilik would be a likely 1 year rental

Makes little sense for the Sens, other than filling a spot in the lineup for a year.
Sign him

What’s he going to ask for?

Will the Sens give it?

Would he rather walk to UFA and choose where he plays?

Does he make the Sens better as a 3rd line winger making ~4+ with limited PP?

He's very reliant on PP production (since his rookie season) and is incredibly streaky.

Again, I don't hate Kubalik, I just don't see him as adding much value. 17th + 2nd vs 17th + 2nd + Kubalik makes almost no difference to me... will just depend on what plans we have with the rest of our cap money.

I do think we can make better use of the cap space, but wouldnt think it's egregious if we spend $2.5m on him. I'd be very surprised if he's better than 8th or 9th amongst our forwards, though.

Kubalik is filler for one year. Not as good as his numbers would suggest. Came out of the gate flying last year with 22 of his 45 points in his first 18 games while playing with Detroit's best players, which means he had 23 points in his last 64 games.

Still he'd be a decent stop gap until (hopefully) Greig is ready for a top 6 role.

Fabbri would be the same, but he's got two years on his deal. Would want Detroit to treat him as a cap dump given he can't stay healthy and makes 4M.

Zadina is pretty much a bust. Has shown very little promise since his draft year and brings nothing beyond scoring. Wouldn't take on his 1.825M deal for free.

Dorion should demand Berggren coming back the other way. He's not exactly a DJ Smith type player. 5'10 European (low character guy) offensive winger, but he's got a lot of skill and has top 6 upside.

Better be Berggen or Rasmussen plus the 1st.

Knowing its Dorion vs Yzerman then it's going to be a couple of 2nd rounders plus Kubalik.

Prove me wrong.

I’d take the 3 consecutive 2nd round picks for DeBrincat. Good chance our scouts can get three players from 18 to 25 from their big board with those picks.

I’d also think we’d take Zadina and Lindström on the cheap over the rest of the rumoured players in Detroit. (I’m assuming Berggren and Rasmussen are off limits)

I think Nashville would be a better trading partner than Detroit, they have plenty of picks & some decent prospects & a #1 goalie who could be moved.

That would be fine, but I think Dorion is definitely going to want someone like Kubalik/Fabbri/Berggren coming back as a replacement winger.

Not a lot on the UFA market to spend DeBrincat's 8M on, and those who are hitting free agency are unlikely to want to come to Ottawa.

Apparently Blashill isn't a huge fan of Berggren, so even though he's a young Swede it's possible he could be an option. I'm frankly more skeptical that we would be interested.

Can't sign him until July 1. UFA after 1 I think we need more certainty than that in the return

I feel like with that type of offer you take him to arbitration and you trade him at the deadline for a 1rst and good prospect.

Kubalik has a year left. Can't see any interest in him.

We could get double retention on Karl if Dorion can get creative with a third team involved.
I think Karlsson would be a great addition on defence and fill the top RD role. At this stage in his career and maturation at age 30+, I think he would fit in just fine. The only issues are his salary/cap hit and the asset cost to acquire him. If San Jose would retain $3M per year I would give up a late first rounder for him as I think he would add a lot to our defence and offence for the next few years which are our projected "FYOUS" years.

No to 3 second round picks. We need quality not quantity.

By the time he plays in the NHL, I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up built like Landeskog, so about 215.
I hope he plays like Landeskog! :)

I think the most valuable thing we get the in DBC trade is cap space, just need to use it wisely

If we can get a 1st + a cheap roster player or prospect just take the L and be aggressive in using our cap space

For who though? It's one thing to fantasize about free agents, but it's quite another to get them to sign in Canada.

I'd like to see something along the lines of

1. Debrincat and Joseph to Detroit For Berggren , 17OA , 45OA
2. 17OA to Phile for Laughton (3 years left at 3AAV) and a 3rd (they have 2)
3. Acquire Barbashev . 6 years 3.5 AAV
4. Acquire Evan Rodrigues 5 years 3 AAV
5. Acquire Korpisalo ~ 3 AAV
Bridge Pinto
Extend Brannstrom short term
Wait on Sanderson (depending on cap space) extend if space is there.
Use 45OA and 3rd R pick in the draft

Add more money to Barbashev to a point.
