Attack the Ufa market.

Come on Bert. The Senators attacking the UFA market isn't a winning strategy for us. Never has been. We're not a destination. We're just coming out of being Siberia after a long rebuild.

We simply don't get quality UFA players at market. We either have to overpay or dumpster dive what's left by July 4.
Idk, UFA market can work out,

MacArthur was a solid UFA signing, that's probably the last time we explored UFA while a) being a competitive team, and b) having the budget to go after bigger names. Gonchar I always thought was an underrated signing. Zub was obviously a huge win though I don't think that's really the type of UFA we're talking about here.

I guess Dadonov is the next closest, he was highly regarded but didn't work out, but we weren't a competitive team yet. We were apparently close on Toffoli, maybe we'd have landed him if we were further along and seen as more competitive. He'd have been solid

I think we need to adjust how we look at trades and signings as we progress from bottom feeder to exciting up and comer,

We do have to switch gears as we move to up and comer

And I liked both signings you mentioned. But that's what? Two in thirty years?

Again though, a big part of the issue is whether or not we had room in the budget to even chase these types of signings. We were almost always in money in money out mode, so we just weren't in the market for big UFA signings.

Interesting summer. Last summer felt like PD had the shackles removed and I liked a lot of what he did honestly. Some moves didn't work, but I still liked his work. Getting a 40 goal scorer was absolutely worth the risk imo. Even seeing him on his way out the door, if you gamble I am glad he gambled on a player like that.

This year? If he's in charge he's obviously fighting for his job and that means playoffs or bust and that's a little scary lol. We have the deBrincat situation to navigate. I have to expect he's going to turn him into players he thinks can help us win. I also kinda think he might find a way to bring Formenton back into the fold as he clearly helps us get better and PD surely feels the pressure to win. Not saying I want that to happen, but I think a desperate GMPD will see a good player sitting there and realize it helps him keep his job to have him back and won't cost him anything.

Off Season Priorities:

1. #1 goalie
2. Formenton - can play 2nd line LW with Norris & Batherson or 3rd line
3. Top six or nine player
4. Fill in other spots internally

This is why it's so hard to see as black and white.

They have a few good ones in their history like you mentioned and they've been rumored to "miss out" on almost no big ones I can recall all these years.

Every summer we'd hear about low expectations and not to expect much, re-sign their guys hopefully, maybe look for some depth, etc.

Seems like the budget has just been too stretched to even get involved much, nor be able to overpay to make it happen. And an underwhelming hockey team a lot of those years to boot.

Not sure if this was mentioned, but WSH is looking to trade Mantha. ADB for Mantha straight up?
My only question is:

Overpaid for what he delivers. UFA at the end of the season. I would look elsewhere. Maybe in conjunction with something else. Maybe with retention.
But 1 for 1 would be bad

Yeah, I think you're right. I still like Mantha and I think he would be a good add. Mantha + pick(s) for ADB (unsigned).

Talbot was not a genius move.

Until this team establishes itself as a legit contender it's unlikely we'll be able to attract top UFA talent.

Anyone penciling in Barbashev or Bertuzzi in DeBrincat's spot are kidding themselves.

We'll likely have to trade assets to fill in the holes in the roster at forward. That's just the reality.

We can still fill holes and improve in free agency without getting the top names we'd want

Absolutely. There are always a few guys who go for cheap in free agency that we could certainly bring to Ottawa by paying them more.

I hope we get creative with filling DeBrincat's spot on the wing. Could "take on" a guy like Garland for free, or even get Vancouver to throw in an asset to get them out of cap trouble.

But I fully expect us to just take the assets we get from DeBrincat and throw them at Philly to get Laughton.

I want Dumba on a 2-4 year deal. He’s the perfect target for our window. Move the cat for Laff and a 2nd. Move Lassi for a pick or a depth DMan (how many 2nds does Arizona even need!?)

But Dumba is my #1 target for 2-4 years. That’s a winning defence.

I also believe Jarventie is our long-term 2nd line winger solution.

The line is clearly drawn - rape and sexual assault is a criminal act. Not wearing a pride jersey is not. That's it.
Heatley was an ass as well. And I think we should've stayed away from him too. He killed a guy. Sorry, but he should've served a prison sentence, same as you or I would if we were in that situation. He could've killed someone else as well. He was driving double the speed limit.
He hasn't been charged. Wearing a pride jersey is a choice. Heatley was a hockey player who drove drunk. Maybe he should have but Quinn's family forgave him & wouldn't press charges. The world is full of horrific stories, GW Bush lied to the world murdered millions of people & is living like a billionaire on his Texas ranch.

Our top 4 seems pretty set not sure I see the need given the cap hit and cost. I’d rather try and upgrade at G

I know this idea gets people riled up, but if we're losing offense by subtracting DeBrincat and replacing him with a couple lesser forwards, I want this team to look at some kind of swap involving Chabot + Joseph (cap dump) for a retained Karlsson.
