Sens fans are out to lunch if we think we are getting Saros or Askarov for an unsigned Debrincat.

Nashville fans are just as out to lunch if they think either those two guys are getting Sanderson.

Both are not happening

Oh, I know it's not happening, I'm just saying that'd be the ask. We need quality coming back.

Understandable but you need to understand a guy like Sanderson who has more value isn’t going to be the return

Sanderson is maybe the best Senator to ever play. Respect to EK but Sandy is better at age 20 then EK was. And on a better team more suited to his style.

It's early but Sanderson is the best Senator ever. Hope they never trade him.

Detroit is obviously on his list.

DeBrincat would become their leading goal scorer or at worst their second leading goal scorer next season if he gets traded to Detroit. You look at their scoring and Larkin got 32 goals, then old Dave Perron who will be 36 in May 2024 scored 24, and Kubalik at 20 goals. I think they would like his ability to score and if hometown ( Farmington Hills) means a lot to Alex, he would be pumped to play in Detroit and might even take a hometown discount on a contract extension to keep his salary below their captain Dylan Larkin who makes $8.7 million.

I wonder what the return would be from the Detroit Red Wings?

lets see how Sanderson does at 21, Karlsson won a norris at that age.

hopefully you're right though.

Chychrun asked for a trade and Arizona didn't want to take back salary mid-season. The situations are worlds apart.

I understand that Chychrun really wanted to come to Ottawa despite what his agent thinks of Dorion. Unless something blows up here . He will be wanting to stay I'd imagine.

Jeff Jackson. Logan Brown's agent has had some dealings with Dorion as well .. no idea what that relationship is really like there was some tension at one point.

It's the biggest shoes to fill. I'll say Sandy is a Norris finalist this year. Might not win but he'll be one of the best 3 in the game.

Oh, I realize how good he is. If we're dealing Saros or Askarov that's the price though. Saros is a top 3-5 goalie in the league and a complete game changer for a team, Askarov is probably the 2nd best goalie prospect in the world after Wallstadt. We're not interested in moving either and the price would be high (Sanderson) if we were.

That's the price for Saros or Askarov. Definitely not moving either for a DeBrincat.
I never said anything about Debrincat for Saros. I just said Sanderson is not available.

As we progress from being a rebuilding team to a potential contender, that dynamic will change. We'll never be the go to destination that NYR are, but we're going to start attracting players again. Winning games solves a lot of problems.
Odd & sad how dim a view of the Senators and the city some have. Some of these U.S. cities that are supposedly great destinations have ugly inner cities and wretched areas. You can tell who hasn't really been outside of Ottawa much when things like this are said.

I thought that was a pretty reasonable position.

I can't relate, like at all, but it seems like the desire to play and live in many of these big US cities is common. The inner cities and wretched areas you reference are of no concern to the filthy rich and their gated communities.

I probably thought that years ago too. But after just under 30 years of living in the environment you just described, I don't think that anymore.

I doubt Schenn is someone the Blues will move.

They have a ton of wingers but few centers. No one behind Thomas and Schenn that could center the 2nd line if Schenn is dealt.

Bolduc and Dean are in the pipeline but are probably a year or two away.
It kind of depends on what the Blues organizational plan is. They traded away O'Reilly, Tarasenko and Barbashev at the trade deadline. It kind of seems like they are trying to do a rebuild/re-tool by getting younger. DeBrincat is fairly young so acquiring him would be in line with that. Schenn will be turning 32 this summer and is the oldest forward they have under contract.

I could certainly see the Blues parting with Schenn if they get DeBrincat in return. You bring up a valid point about the positional issue, but a big factor is likely trying to determine the best competitive window and optimizing assets. It also helps them manage their cap by reallocating the $6.5m cap hit from Schenn's contract to that of DeBrincat's future contract.

Welcome back Rafi. Schenn would be a solid target & would certainly help but I'm more in line with acquiring good younger players/prospects.

If the Sens would make a deal with St Louis I would like to see them target Jimmy Snuggerud RW & one of their late 1st rd picks. Oliver Bonk RD should be available late in the 1st rd who Ott could target. While that doesn't help right now I think they have some players that could help them now in their org & those two would certainly help them in a few yrs when the group is reaching their prime. The free money could also help them sign a couple of UFAs that could help them right now.

Tkachuk - Stutzle - Giroux
Formenton - Norris - Batherson
Greig - Pinto - Gauthier
Ostapchuk - Kastelic - Sokolov
Unless the Sens think the prospects that they consider acquiring will make the jump soon or be big impact players, it seems more likely that they will either try to facilitate a 3 way trade to move DeBrincat or flip the picks/prospects they acquire to another team if they can't get players in return that can help them now. Unless of course they think they have a good chance of signing some key UFAs and think they would have a better impact on the team's performance than roster players available via trade.

As for your roster, I don't think Gauthier is brought back. He doesn't really fit on the team and my guess is he gets flipped for a late pick at the draft. Formenton is a question mark if the league will allow him back in this season and whether that whole off ice issue is resolved or not. Greig and Sokolov likely make the jump next season so I see them on the roster. Ostapchuk could surprise in training camp but the Sens likely won't be in a rush to play him in the NHL. Him and Boucher are physically likely ready to play in the NHL but the Sens will probably want them playing big roles in Belleville and developing whatever offensive potential they can achieve than to play limited minutes in a checking role on the 4th line.

I like the 4th line with Lucic - Kastelic - Sabourin ! Other teams would be reluctant to target our best players with those 3 in the lineup. Would like the look of Reaves there too.
Would that be considered overkill?

Where does Dubois fit? Apparently he only wants to play centre and I doubt he’s going to sign if he isn’t given a a centre spot.
He would have a C spot on the Senators:

Stutzle
Norris
Dubois
Pinto/Kastelic with Pinto possibly being moved to play Wing.

Imo, the best way to maximize DeBrincats possible return would be to take back as much cap/contacts to allow the other team more flexibility.

This is our one chance to maximize cap space in a return.

You’re supposed to take back bad contracts when a team is rebuilding. Not when you’re trying to contend.

Well they dont really need an exact replacement they need a guy who can play in the top 6 and is good 5 on 5 while being hard to play against. Debrincat was a luxury on a team that already has multiple players with a similar skill set they have commited money to on way better terms.
okay i hope we can find good top 6 guys who are hard to play against and who are good 5v5. two of them. potentially 3 actually with the hockey canada sitch

I don't see Sabourin making the jump next season, plus he isn't currently under contract. I think Sokolov is on the team for sure as long as he has a good summer. He is waiver eligible and the Sens won't risk losing him if he takes a good step forward this offseason.

It would be pretty wild if the Sens got both Lucic and Reaves. They likely target at least one though. Lucic did have a solid WC and will likely come cheap on a one year deal. Reaves might want more than one year.

I guess it is possible that the Sens somehow sign both. It might depend on how they fill DeBrincat's role and what the 3rd line looks like to end up signing both Lucic and Reaves. A Lucic-Kastelic-Reaves could actually be an effective 4th line. It would be very strong along the boards and could probably get a good cycle game going. It might be effective at pinning the opposition in their zone and maintaining possession while we get a line change. That could result in an increase in even strength goals.

Three team trade with OTT/WPG/???

Probably not realistic but DBC and PLD are in similar situations contract-wise. There may be a way to use that to our advantage.
