Are you forgetting about the Jyri Niemi blockbuster?

Speaking of, I was recently looking at the vetoed Zigmund Palffy trade:

Why was that deal vetoed? Looks like largely a hockey deal to me. Much more so than the Kovalev trade.

I believe there was some behind the scenes financial aspects involving the Isles TV rights and MSG network as being an unofficial part of the compensation going to the Isles.

I know we all love to debate trades only second to prospect development curves, but honestly I'd like to see what the current squad can do as constituted before we make any significant moves.

(Outside the obvious 6th defenseman if one becomes available - or something ridiculously lopsided if some GM offers Slats something crazy).

No, my point is it's well-known that they could use another legit defenseman. And have for over a year. That said, aside from that, I don't think it's really clear what this team needs because they haven't really shown what they are as a team. In other words, I don't think we can really know what the "new needs" are.

He's shown a willingness to throw in picks so you'll be thrilled. They don't have a first. They don't have real top prospects (assuming that Miller and Kreider are staying with the big club and won't be traded). They don't have the system depth to treat picks and prospects as disposable.
You are very philosophical about needs. You say they have needed a defenseman for over a year, but insist its unclear what they need.

I'm not suggesting emptying the system. But would you be unwilling to trade a 2nd and a 3rd for a player that would give the Rangers a better shot at some silver? For the purposes of the question, assume by that time a need have clearly identified itself.

That would make more sense.

I really fail to see why you're having such a hard time with what I'm suggesting. They have needed a defenseman for over a year. Still do. Outside of that defenseman, I don't think it's clear what they need.

I can't answer that in a vacuum. I will say that I would deal anybody if it would give the Rangers a better chance of winning a Cup.

If Colorado wanted Marc Staal for ROR, would you do it?

Nope.

Carolina will pay more for him eventually if they want all three brothers.

Second to that fact, Staal is still this teams 1a/1b/1c to Girardi and McD, and the defense was what got them to the ECF last season.

They don't have the defensive depth right now to lose Marc. MDZ is too up and down, Stralman and Gilroy look good, but Gilroy needs sheltered minutes, and Stralman won't always play at a level where he can log 25+ a night and still be solid. Even if he could, then you are returning to the problem of a turnstile for the 6th/7th defensemen.

I doubt the Avs offer RoR, and a solid bottom 6 d, for just Staal. They have their own depth woes in the D department.

Ziggy Palffy on this team would've been some sort of fun.

Lots of interesting "what ifs".

Sundstrom (and the '00 first rounder) went in the Brendl trade. And the '99 first rounder was traded with Marc Savard for the Lundmark pick and Hlavac. Todd Harvey was traded for Dvorak. And both Brendl and Hlavac were big pieces of the Lindros trade. And where does Cloutier go with expansion coming up? He looked pretty good at the time.

Do we end up with our "future 1st liners" in Brendl and Lundmark? Czech line? FLY line? Do we keep Savard? Maybe a miracle '00 playoff run and Sather never gets hired?

Weird to think.

I never suggested I would do it, but I expect they would ask for either Staal, Stepan, or Del Zotto. Possibly more. The way our team is constructed, we can't afford to lose Del Zotto. The other two are more reasonable.

I'd do it, but Jeff's extension carries 5.75, that'd be a tough pill to swallow.

Not a rumor, this is just for fun....

Say John Tavares eventually wants off the Islanders....

Stepan/Kreider/McIrath/1st?

Yes.

That was fun.

It was fun for me too! :sarcasm:

Seeing how people objected to AA/Dubi/Erixson/1st for Rick Nash, I thought it was a fair question.

There is no doubt that Kreider/Stepan are worth a lot more than Dubi/AA.

But because of Tavares' youth, he's more expensive in a trade, too.

I think I'd do it.

Staal has been our best defenseman since the devils series and to a great extent even the capitals series. He has been the shutdown defenseman that he was before the concussion. His offense is improving. And we're gona deal him for an unproven ROR? I wouldn't even trade Stepan for him. Stepan is due a raise but I don't think he'll make as much as ROR, but yet he'll still put up
similar numbers and he fits with this team.

Stop trying to make trades for everyone that is available. Same goes for every player that hits waivers.
