You keep asking that, and we keep telling you no.

But I'm looking towards the deadline, and I think most people here likely are too. Even if we are discussing it now.

And how do people know what they will need at the deadline? Not even sure what they need now.

Don't really feel like another discussion on the philosophy of needing something, but I needs could be identified now, and I see little reason to suggest they will change significantly in 2 months.

I agree it'll take some more analyses regarding how this current incarnation of the team performs, but I think some educated guesses can be made.

I think Sather and company have adequately addressed the depth problem at forward - we'll see how that goes if Miller stays up.

Its not rocket science to see this team could use another defenseman capable of playing a regular shift - in a perfect world, he'd be able to contribute on the powerplay. I like this Streit talk, but doubt the Islanders help out the Rangers in any way.

May take a three team deal.

Is Streit's contract really $775K/year for the next 3 years? If so that's not a bad deal at all especially when he'd be a 5/6 guy here whereas he's 3/4 guy on many teams in the league. His point presence on the PP would be great. I'd pay the extra charge the rangers might have to pay compared to other teams to have him complete the 5/6 with Stralman. Give them Eminger or Gilroy as part of the deal so they have a roster player to finish the season for them.

Also acquiring Streit would leave room for one other deadline acquisition if need be.

EDIT EDIT EDIT...lol...my apologies. I just checked capgeek and the page before. It's $4.1 million. But at the deadline his cap hit definitely will not be as high and he is a UFA at the end of the year. Perfect situation. I knew $775k was way too low. Silly me.

Brian Strait is signed for 775K. Mark Streit is a UFA at season's end.

Despite some early struggles, I think the D (if healthy) looks fantastic, especially with the reemergence of staal and the solid play from Stralman. However, the three headed eminger-Bickel-Gilroy monster is just ugly!

Who will be our number 6?!

My thoughts on some realistic and affordable options. These trades would have us sending 2nd or 3rd round picks and/or prospects.

1. Hainsey: I'm not sure if we can afford him, (salary cap) but if we can, he is a smooth skater and can move the puck very well.

2. John Erskine: If the caps keep falling maybe they will be willing to part with him (not sure how he is playing this year but in years past he has been a great physcial presence and makes a solid first pass).

3. Chis Butler: Haven't watched him play this year, but with Buffalo he was a pretty reliabile young d-man.

4. Ryan Whitney: Looks like he wants out of Edmonton. Not sure if we would be able to fit him under the cap, but I think playing for a contender could rejuvenate his play. He has been awful this year; I can see the value he would bring to a 3rd pairing but he may end up in the torts dog-house too.

Would you pay for these guys and what would be your price? Who else is available?

For the record, I hope J.T. Miller sticks, and if he does I think we should absolutely keep Boyle because forward depth will always be extremely important, and Boyle has been consitent in the past and was very reliable in the playoffs.

I watched Hainsey in Winnipeg and he plays RD and could help on the PP.........I would take him for a pick and Eminger

According to CapGeek, we'll have $13,328,158 in cap space at the deadline, so that would be plenty.

If there was a market for Kaberle there will be a market for Whitney. Maybe Detroit?

Market? Boston made a terrible trade for Kaberle. They won in spite of Kaberle. Boston traded a #1 pick for him and didn't attempt to re-sign him. Carolina signed Kaberle to a terrible contract and Pierre Gauthier came along to rescue Jimmy Rutherford from his stupidity. Where is Kaberle going next? Compliance buyout. There was a market for Bryan McCabe but he couldn't play anymore. If the player is not playing well for another team, expecting that player to play better when he is traded is asking a lot.

The Islanders and Rangers aren't making a trade. The Islanders acquired the Thomas contract to make them compliant with the floor when they trade off guys in the next 4-6 weeks. Hopefully the NHLPA threatens to file a grievance like they did in the Wade Redden and Scott Gomez situations. The PA didn't like those players being sent home. The PA said it will hurt their future market value. The NHLPA proposed and received the changes they wanted with performance bonuses and the floor. The Islanders trade for contract of a player who isn't not getting paid to reach the floor. Not now. A few weeks from now. The PA can't file a grievance until the Islanders actually reach the floor with the 35 plus Thomas contract. You know its coming.

What I was saying is that Kaberle looked awful in Carolina and they still were able to deal him. If Kaberle had a market, one would assume Whitney would be able to be moved as well.

No way. Hainsey is terrible defensively. If the Rangers bring in anyone, they should either:

a) improve the PP
b) add toughness/grit to the back-end

On top of one of those things, they need to be able to play 15 minutes a night consistently.

Alright so about a 1/4 of the way through the season, here is a list of the bottom-5 teams from each conference and who they may be selling:

-Players in bold I would look into if I were the Rangers

Winnepeg:
Antropov
Ponikarovsky
Wellwood
Little?
Hainsey
Clitsome
Postma?

Sabres:
Hecht
Regehr
Leopold
Sulzer

Islanders:
Reasoner
Boyes
Boulton
Aucoin
Visnovsky
Streit
- Will most likely cost too much
Martinek

Panthers:
Weiss - Will most likely cost too much

Caps:
Ribeiro
Hendricks - Depending on where the Rangers depth/injuries are at at the deadline
Fehr
Wolski
Hamrlik
Poti
Erskine

Calgary:
Iginla
Cervenka
Begin
Babchuk

LA:
Gagne
Penner
Scuderi

Edmonton:
Jones
Whitney
Smid
Fistric
Sutton

Colorado:
Hejduk - Most likely not moving
Kobasew
O'Byrne

Columbus:
Prospal
Brassard?
Aucoin
Will they clean house with Howson gone?

Regehr, Visnovsky, Smid and Scuderi I'd be interested in. Is Regehr still a good defensive defensemen?

Ryan O'Reilly: Any chance Rangers can get him?

This guy is exactly the player the Rangers are missing up front. Any chance the Rangers can pull a trade off without screwing up their cap situation or losing too much talent?

The Avs also have some useful depth D-men...

Sure.

...off without screwing up their cap situation or losing too much talent?
That's a much, much smaller chance, probably no. Not definitely, but probably no.

Any chance the Rangers can pull a trade off without screwing up their cap situation or losing too much talent?

Short answer? No.

Long answer? No, they cannot.

First of all, he's a Center,

Richards
Stepan
Miller/Boyle
Halpern/Boyle

Picking up RoR would mean sending one of Boyle, Halpern, or even Miller the other way. Miller doesn't make sense because he will probably be what RoR is by the time he is the same age, or better.

So Boyle or Halpern, and even if they were interested in taking one of those guys back in return, that still means Miller goes back down to continue development and leaves either Boyle or Halpern for the 4th line. Meaning when Miller is ready to come up permanently, whoever is left still has to be moved. I guess having too many serviceable centers is never a bad thing, but then you have to talk money.

If the Rangers can even sign RoR, it's going to be a decent contract. Derek Stepan is due for a raise next year, he will probably get at least 2.5-3mil a year. I guess buying out Richards is an option to free up money for paying others, but then you are stuck with 3 potentially solid 2nd line centers, and no legit 1st line center. In terms of depth it's not a bad thing, but that's also assuming Stepan, RoR, and Miller live up to their potential.

Then there's the issue of giving other pending RFAs a raise. Not to mention Gaborik, does he get let go to pay other people? Who replaces him?

As far as trade or talent loss, it is suggested they are looking for a high prospect, and a roster player.

Boyle or Halpern aren't going to cut it alone. Giving them Miller or Stepan is a wash basically. They don't have the depth right now to move any other roster players after moving Dubinsky and Arty. So who do they offer that even makes sense for the Avs?

Who is the prospect?

Right now it just doesn't seem to make sense.

The Rangers have needed a defenseman for over a season now. That's not new. I just think there's a lot of speculation of what this team needs thats premature. After the Rupp/Powe trade the team finally seems to be building chemistry through continuity.

What I find puzzling is:

1) Why people are so willing to trade Boyle after four games of JT Miller.

2) Why people keep talking about deals around Eminger and/or Bickel. What teams really want those guys? What team doesn't already have guys like those guys.

3) Why some people are so willing to throw in picks and prospects.

The Rupp/Powe trade was a no-brainer. I just don't feel that we know what their needs really are. And if they have a forward go down, doesn't that completely change what their needs are?

No, we'd definitely have to send back some pieces that would hurt us somewhere. The problem with ROR is that he isn't proven offensively. We're not in a position to give up big pieces to acquire a kid who hasn't shown he can be a consistent threat. It could ultimately hurt us rather than help us.

I think there are probably a few GM's out there that are looking at ROR as a potential 1st line center who developed his offensive game late. I'm not sure I see that.

What point are you trying to make here? Only new needs are relevant?

No, my point is it's well-known that they could use another legit defenseman. And have for over a year. That said, aside from that, I don't think it's really clear what this team needs because they haven't really shown what they are as a team. In other words, I don't think we can really know what the "new needs" are.

I'm guessing they want to maximize the chances of the Rangers winning the Cup. A goal I hope Glen Sather shares.

He's shown a willingness to throw in picks so you'll be thrilled. They don't have a first. They don't have real top prospects (assuming that Miller and Kreider are staying with the big club and won't be traded). They don't have the system depth to treat picks and prospects as disposable.

The Islanders and Rangers aren't making a trade.
Are you forgetting about the Jyri Niemi blockbuster?

Speaking of, I was recently looking at the vetoed Zigmund Palffy trade:

The hockey part of the deal has been completed. Both teams' general managers, Mike Milbury of the Islanders and Neil Smith of the Rangers, have reached an agreement on the players who will be swapped -- Palffy and defenseman Rich Pilon to the Rangers in exchange for forwards Niklas Sundstrom and Todd Harvey, plus a first-round pick, a minor leaguer and $2.5 million.
Why was that deal vetoed? Looks like largely a hockey deal to me. Much more so than the Kovalev trade.
