What sensible win-win, preferably keeping Kreider, is a deal we can make that gives us Benn for 3 years?

What would Dallas want?

If we ate a portion of his contract (the only really huge one on NYR not Gabby or Nash), could we send Brad Richards back? Would he go?

That would be so bad for Dallas to be in a position where they`d have to trade their best young player to get back a player on a ridiculously horrible contract who left no doubt about how he wanted to leave and **** them over in the process. Don't question if your peers know hockey when clearly you don't know jack. Hagelin played a serviceable game after struggling the first two. He drew a penalty in the 3rd with his speed, pinned Boston a couple times with his speed, and he would have scored had the penalty not been called on Rupp because Rask was clearly not distracted by the whistle and was trying to stop the puck.

Halpern wasn't playing because Torts went to 3 lines from the middle of the 2nd period on to secure a win. Boston did the same thing...if you were paying attention (but clearly you weren't). Halpern did get PK time and was in front of Rask on a slapshot by Girardi when Rupp set him up as a pk expired. Halpern came close to scoring there.

Oh and btw, save the play by play criticism for the GDT....since...you know....that is what it's for.

Note with appreciation you say Dallas would be in that position, not that it was my idea to say, hey, how can do a McDonagh on them.

They wanted Benn long term, he doesn't wanna go there now.
That happens to work well for us, because that's when other contracts will explode.

Benn restricting his next deal to max $ for 3 yrs only impacts offers.
But there will still be other good offers.
I said win-win, as in something wince wince we'll notice, but be worth it.
Dallas has to decide what is the best deal --- or offer Benn 3 years (but that's on them, not us).

I understand there are options in the later years, so it's really more like 4 + yrs.

It was high, not horrible before, that's was the going rate.
And I'm not gonna be hypocritical about it.
That's what Richards wanted, that's what he commanded, that's what he got.

Now with the new CBA, this deal is not in a vacuum, so we move him, or lose several other guys, which doesn't make sense.

We could create space dealing him elsewhere.
But this would help if Richards and Dallas were comfortable enough with it.

It's a good + high end passing center for a do it all great C, i.e, 1 for 1.
Rangers add in enough, may be something they can live with, compared to lowball offers.

It was my understanding, and I could well be wrong so pls advise if I am not fully informed, but it was my understanding he was good in Dallas, even gave them a chance during his last season there to work out something, which didn't happen. So Torts might be his favorite, but he would not be adverse to to the Stars, if he was getting paid.

To allow for saving face, we'd have to eat part of the current deal, and if $ is allowed to be included under the new CBA, we may have to do some of that.

Richards at some point does have to give Rangers options to move him, if he is the one contract they can't merely not afford vs. cap, but need to move so there is enough cap for multiple younger guys. I don't remember the exact provisions, but at some point soon, those will kick in. Richards did that, IMO, both to be magnanimous and because that was some of the leverage Sather had in negotiation, a price Richards paid to get top dollar.
As long as he gets top dollar, he can't complain.

Laugh all you want, it's a free country.
However after this year, slowly but surely, offers for Richards will be entertained.

Surely you don't deny the fact that we will, 2-3 years from now, need more room under a lower cap to sign more guys?

If higher priced guys (since we properly are definitely keeping our snipers Nash and Gaborik) like Girardi + even Staal + Richards, ultimately if they are moved, it makes sense to get a better deal sooner from a position of strength, than otherwise.

Reading your posts are painful. Last time I checked Kreider is a rookie. But to compare him to Bickel is just an incoherent thought. "My boy" has raw talent and skills to survive in this league. At times he has had trouble keeping up with the tempo of the game. He will gain confidence against the lesser of the teams in the conference and develop his game. Its been three games.

Yeah, but OEL is looking extremely good and Larsson is still very very young (he went in the same draft as JT Miller).

Tim Erixon and David Rundblad are both the same age as Chris Kreider give or take a few month's. I think both the former mentioned have been hyped for sure, but its extremely early to label them as a somewhat of a lost generation or something even remotely like that. I also think that its important to acknowledge that Rundblad would be a heck of a better fit in NY than Erixon. Tim had Staal, McD and MDZ ahead of him on the depth chart, and is not a PPQB (on the same team the same season Rundblad had 50 pts and Erixon had 24 pts).

It all depends on what perspective you look at this from. I would be hesitant to trade Kreider or even Miller for Rundblad. I don't think he is a lock to become a star in this league. But boy could he potentially make a impact here in NY, talk about coming to a set table in terms of a open spot on a PP with Richards, Nash, Callahan and co. Having a ton of solid defensive partners to play with. And so forth.

Its certainly a legit concern with Rundblad to worry what we would have to give up to get him.

OEL is 21 y/o and was around 30th overall in scoring for D's last season as a 19-20 y/o. He will look to move into the top 15-20 this season (I think he is 7th right now).

For Portland during the lockout, it wasn''t OEL who ran the PP. Or former 13th overall pick in 2010 Brandon Gormley. It was David Rundblad.

Tim Erixon saw some PP time in NY as a 20 y/o, David Rundblad is easily 2x good as Erixon on the PP. Comparing Erixon with Rundblad is like comparing Kevin Lowe with Sergei Zubov.

That's why Rundblad is interesting. He is tremendous on the PP point. He has been a star in 2 WJCs. Played in the men's WCH's as a 20 y/o. He has played 30 games in the NHL and done some really good things. He has been a star in the AHL. He is still the same age as Chris Kreider.

David Rundblad is definitely "flawed" offensively. He is a good hitter, would easily be the best hitting D on this team (he somewhat of a poor mans Kronwall, and that part of his game could improve alot too). But the mobility/defensive lateral movement isn't there to play a top notch defensive game. If there is a fast transition play he is sometimes exposed. He is definitely not Zherdev on defense, but like we see Bickel getting beaten defensively we would also see Rundblad exposed from time to time. If not, he would never be available.

He would definitely have tremendous upside on this team. The downside is hard to value though, depends on what we give up. I definitely hopes that Slats are calling Maloney about him though, because if we could get him he could be the diffrence between like a 22% PP or a 16% PP...

That last sentence is the important piece. We likely don't have the assets to acquire a guy like Rundblad. Phoenix needs NHL ready offense and we have none to give. We spent most of our capital on Nash, which I fully endorse, but at the same time it left us very thin in terms of tradeable assets. Unless some team comes along and is interested in guys who are a long way off, or draft picks who are even further away, we're going to be scraping the bottom of the barrel for help.

I think a veteran, stay-at-home defenseman would be optimal on our 3rd pair with DZ. Rundblad would be great nonetheless of course, but what would he cost?
Oh and I have absolutely no interest in Subban for what he will cost both in assets and money. He is a nice player, but adding him will be lateral at best considering the costs. Like Trxjw said: He's good, but he's not that good.

I seriously think the valuation period of Gabby starts when the puck is dropped in the PO's and stops when the PO's are over.

Gabby got a NTC unless I am misstaken and you always gotta evaluate if you can find a better replacement when a trade is made, but I don't think trading Gabby is out of the question unless he really performs in the PO's.
