I think the idea was that it was easier to replace those 15-20 goal scorers over the subsequent 2-3 years when you have the 40 goal scorer, at which time, you would be in better shape. It has been harder than I am sure they thought it would be.
.

I wish it was easier. But this is a team that is pretty bare with 20 goal scorers.

After Richards goes, they have 3 guys who have scored 20+ goals

Stepan, Nash, Cally (I guess you can count Boyle if he stays, but he won't hit 20 again)

That's pretty terrible. And who do they have that is soon going to be 20+? Maybe Kreider and Zucc?

Hagelin is probably more of a 15 goal guy, Brassard is stuck in neutral.

I don't have much hope that Miller or Kristo will be a 20 goal scorer next year, though I would certainly like it.

People need to realize that there's a middle ground between buying a team every summer and blowing it up. A team can take a step back for a year and still manage to be competitive again very quickly.

Move Callahan and Girardi. Those two guys would fetch a solid return from teams that are going for it this year. Those are the kind of players GM's love to add to their team and there aren't any movement clauses to get in the way. You'd get an even better return if you flipped them to a team that wanted to sign them.

Exactly. Those guys arent going to be moved for picks. You should be able to get an NHL-ready prospect and a pick for both from a contender.

Truth be told, the decision should already be made regarding if Callahan and Girardi will be Rangers next year. Management should have their contract demands, and those demands should be out of whack. There should be discussions going on regarding the type of players they want to target in a return for Callahan/Girardi.

...but I doubt thats happening under sloppy Glen Sather.

That is the way a good organization should be run. Just flat out tell the players agent, if you don't lower your demands, we will be moving them. Don't let it hang over the team. Make a decision and be decisive.

Here's a question. What if you kept most of the offense in tact, but went after a defenseman to pair with McD? Give the rangers one of the best first D lines in the league.

What RD could be had that could fit that role? And what would it cost to bring them in?

Imagine a pairing of something like McDonagh and Justin Schultz

Letang? Shattenkirk? I guess it depends on what you call a first line Dman. I have no clue

I have been a proponent of buying out Richards after this season (not after last) but am having certain reservations about this now.

As I said early in his campaign here, as Richards goes, so the power play goes. 80% of everything good on the power play seems to come through Brad. No one is worried about Stepan or Zuccarello shooting the puck. They just play the passing lanes. Richards and Nash are the only players that are genuinely considered threats. Who does our power play center in on when Richards is gone? McDonagh? The puck skips over his stick at an inordinate rate.

If NYR are going to let Callahan and Girardi go, they have little reason to not keep Richards, to be honest.

I imagined it. It was sad to watch McDonagh killing himself while trying to cover for Schultz' complete lack of ability to play defense.

I agree. Some people think its a 100% guarantee that Richards goes after this year, i wouldnt be so sure.

He's already killing himself making up for no offense, no goalie, girardi playing like poo, and 2 other D lines that can't do anything

Richards is only marginally better than he was last year. He is on pace for 61 points and it will only go downhill as he gets older. Additionally, he is a part of the leadership core which has been disappointing since last season. He must go.

Cap-recapture, for one.

We need to get away from this thinking where the first question is "How are we going to replace this guy?" It leads to short-term, half-assed decision making. We need a confident GM in here thats committed to a direction, even if it involves a short-term step backwards.

You dont get rid of Richards this offseason, you're stuck with him for another 6 years. Who the hell needs that?

I think production is not the best indicator in this case. Nash missed a big clump of games and the whole team is not scoring, Richards has been one of the few to show any offensive competence with Kreider and Zuccarello (Though they have been streakier)

Um, cap recapture? That's a pretty big reason.

We're going to be getting to a place in the league where players are far more valuable than cap space. The cap is rising and the level of talent in the league is not following it.

A few years of 5 mil recapture when the cap is 100 mil is nothing.

I dont follow the logic.

Just because Richards has been the best offensive performer on a terrible offensive team, doesnt mean we should keep him for another 6 years.

....Richards hasn't been too good since the first 2 weeks of the season, either.

This leadership core is rotten.

Well, we have people talking about removing the three team captains in one offseason. That's a heck of an overhaul.

Even so, he hasn't been a noticeable force on the ice. He has cut down on some of the bone-headed decisions he made last year, but he is still a defensive liability and looks like a passenger half the time.

I have always felt that for Richards to avoid being bought out, he would have to be substantially better than how he has played his past 2 seasons as a Ranger, and I don't find that to be the case this year.
