Why does everyone always bring up Cheechoo? Guy got hurt and was never the same. He was always a talented goal scorer, probably would have been a consistent 30+ goal guy if he were healthy. Putting him with arguably the best playmaker of this era definitely helped him get to 50, but let's not pretend like he was a scrub.

He was the largest benefactor in a weird 2005-2006 season that turned into an offensive bonanza because of an absurd # of penalties called, and a stupid offsides rules that turned defensemen into human turnover machines.

An Edmonton Journal blogger looked at what Edmonton could trade for a defenseman.

MacTavish wants to add a defenseman.

The top 2 options

The Options
Draft picks. Obviously the 2014 first rounder is the top item here; if the draft were held today Edmonton would be picking second overall and that’s a huge bargaining chip. The team’s second round pick this year was sent away in the trade that brought David Perron to town, but otherwise they have a full slate of picks for the next few years at their disposal (Edmonton’s fourth round pick in 2014 was dealt away for Mike Brown, but the team got one back from San Jose when Brown was shipped out).

Oscar Klefbom. Klefbom is a top prospect with a lot of physical ability, and it seems like he’s a big part of the Oilers’ long-term plans. Given the team’s depth in defensive prospects – and especially with Darnell Nurse showing so well in junior – it seems plausible that he’d be available though, particularly since he lacks top-end offensive upside.

Bob McKenzie said on the NHL Network(3-4-5 weeks ago) that teams have inquired about Klefbom but he isn't available. The Rangers probably had Klefbom on their list in 2011 when they selected Miller. Klefbom is redundant on the Rangers. Lefty. Not much offense. That's probably a reason why they took Miller 3 picks before Klefbom. I heard Darren Dreger say on TSN radio a few weeks ago that MacTavish had a deal on the table for the 2013 first rounder in a deal for a defenseman but he couldn't pull the trigger. He took Nurse with the pick.

No match with Edmonton. MacTavish isn't moving the top pick. He seems gun shy about making a big deal.

Martin Erat has publicly demanded a trade from the Capitals which of course forces their hand and drives his value down. I'd at least take a look if I were in Sather's shoes.

Eh, what would you give up for him?

Not relevant to anything really but if Phaneuf becomes avail. in free agency I want the Rangers all over that. Him and McIlrath on the same defense corps? Absolutely miserable for the opposition.

Isn't LW, historically, a weaker position in terms of depth?

Yes.

I'm not sure if this is the explanation but I'll give it a go. Historically, more offensively minded forwards play on their off-wing. Sniper style, it gives them the better angle on net. It also makes it harder to sustain puck possession in a more cycle-style game. Guys like Nash, Gaborik, Ovechkin, the list goes on.

Also historically, more NHL hockey players shoot left than right. SO you have more of a pool of offensive minded left shooting players to play the right side.

He plays the right side, too, despite being a lefty.

I would be 100% down with replacing Girardi with Phaneuf.

I have to be honest, I really am not crazy about resigning Girardi. He's been just, not good this year. He had a good game against Nashville but his game is WAY too up and down this season for my liking. He's on the decline and he's very clearly not adapted to AV's system. I would replace him with Phaneuf without even thinking about it.

Yeah, not the biggest fan of Phaneuf, but I'm even a smaller fan of Girardi. I replace Girardi with Phaneuf 11 times out of 10.

You'd figure that with the majority of the population being right handed, that would be the case.

His game just doesn't sync with what Vigneault is trying to do. He was tailor made for Torts' defensive structure. The extra skating and having to make more plays on the rush is not a good combination for Girardi. We all like him. Hes been a good soldier for us.

But is this organization is dedicating itself to this style of play, then the smart move is getting rid of Girardi.

I agree. I just hope they don't let him walk for nothing then...

On a sidenote, if they continue this style I think Stralman has to be kept.

I agree. Girardi seems a bit out of place in this defensive system. He was great with Torts and Renney but when a new coach comes and changes the defense, we can see his flaws

I hate the idea after what he did to Sauer, but it was a clean hit and I guess if it made the Rangers a better team in the end, you have to do it.
